Consolidated Kansas

okay, forgot to say I went to the ReStore again today and picked up little plantation shutters for the windows. (for decoration) They are actually the inside shutters, but figure if I paint them up really nice with outdoor paint they'll be okay. I also got a cute old fashioned light to put in the top of the coop. I'm going to go ahead and wire it up and install all the lights so when ever we trench it, we'll be set. I'm hunting for an outside light, but they didn't have any. I'll have to keep looking, they always have new things in every day. I'm thinking it would be nice to have an outdoor light I can flip on from inside the house. Our barn is like that- I can turn them on and off so I don't have to walk out to a dark and scary barn.

Are you in an urban area? I think it would be better to call and make a complaint. If the sherrif stops by their house at 3 a.m. to ask them to shut their dog up they might pay a little more attention. They don't have to say who made the complaint. It sounds like a real nuisance.

I grew up on a small farm. Luckily we never had problems with stray dogs. Where we live now it's a different story. I would never deliberately shoot someones pet, but if it is going after my livestock I would not hesitate. If the dog goes after you... that's a TOTALLY different story. If the dog acts like it is going to attack you I would report it right away! Sometimes authorities are rather ho hum about a dog attacking your chickens. You will get more response if the dog is trying to attack you.

Good luck with this. I know how high tempers can run over things like this, so unless you feel the owners would be receptive to what you tell them about their dog, I would let your local authorities handle it. If the dog attacks anything, the best way to handle it is with a rifle. That's my opinion.

If you can put up an electric wire, do. That's your first line of defense. The birds are not 'his' so there's no reason he won't just choose to go after them at some point, soon. Definitely call about the noise, and point out that you feel threatened.

Certainly let your chickens in the garden. They'll have a hay day. Chickens are pretty smart. They tend to avoid plants that are poisonous. Your only real concern would be mold or pestisides. If you didn't leave moldy veggies laying in there and haven't recently sprayed there shouldn't be any problems. I would put your birds back in their coop or tractor at night though. You don't need much fencing as long as you don't have a lot of predators around. You didn't mention how old your birds were. 5" apart sounds a bit big for chickens. You might want to add some wire inside that to keep the birds in. Besides it would help keep out rabbits etc next year.

I feel like I've deserted all of you. I had such a busy day yesterday and never got back on here. Ivywoods I'll keep my ears open for someone wanting a Pyrenees. I sold all my puppies so quickly. How old is this girl? Has she been around goats? And for the record we didn't get rain again. A few sprinkles. Man it is dry. I have only mowed one time since the first of June. It is a dust bowl.
I had such a busy day yesterday and I definitely feel my age today. I finally got the DH in gear and we worked our butts off. We bush hogged a huge area of 8 foot tall weeds. Then we tore out three stretches of fence. I did most of the wire work and most of the mowing (while he took a nap) so my arthritic hands are in mucho pain today. This is where my chicken palace is supposed to go. I really need a lot of dirt work done but we only have a small tractor so it would take forever.
DH got this thing off his jack that is made to pull metal posts. It's a God send. We hooked it to a chain and then to the tractor bucket and it pulled posts like pulling them out of butter. Too bad you can't drive them that easy. The 50 year old hedge posts however were another story. Most of those broke before we got them pulled. I get kind of nervous on the tractor pulling wood posts. Last year I was trying to pull one and tipped the tractor. Scared the holy---- out of me! I've been a bit nervous on it ever since. It looks so much nicer out there. I can actually look out and see the tree line without obstruction for the first time ever.
My day today is going to be equally as busy. I have to take all the storm windows off the house. Then I have to remove all the blinds (except the ones in the bedroom. Those can wait until morning.) They are coming to install my new windows tomorrow. Yippee!
Dh is planning to work on his mess in the driveway where he has been working on the truck. It will take him all day. (Frequent breaks and lots of staring at it.)

anyone else look at the forecast? Our temps shot back up to the 100's today and tomorrow and then they fall off a cliff. I'm ready to see them go now. sigh. Chickens are cranky about it too.

Which Kansas do you live in? I want to move there. I just checked our forecast and it is supposed to be 100 + until Sunday. I would so welcome some cool weather! I am SOOOOOO tired of this heat. Maybe they'll change the forecast here and make me happy!

our temps look like they drop on Sunday. Supposed to maybe have rain on Saturday?? I haven't gotten ANY work done today and I'm frustrated! The adjuster has been here all morning and is still here. UGH. He was supposed to be here at 9:30am, and my dog had a grooming appt this morning and I was on my way to drop her off a little before 8am and he called and said he was on his way! I was so upset, and I had to turn around and come back home. I called my mom and told her my sob story and she took my dog over to the groomers. If I miss that appt- I can't make another one for weeks. I saw the high is 104 today, but out here, I'm sure it will be higher.

Danz, I can't believe you tipped over your tractor!! OMG! That is really bad! I hear every summer of some person dying because they tipped their tractor. Geez. I bet your land looks so much nicer now! I can only imagine how it feels to get all of that work done! Good job!!

Ivy, I hope you find a nice home for your dog, I'm really sorry about all of that.

I have two little dogs- one is a 6 lbs pomeranian and the other is a shih tzu and the pom is pretty laid back and doesn't care about the turkey. But my shih tzu is CRAZY and I'm about 100% sure she'd try to kill my turkey. When she goes outside, her brain shuts off and she goes into attack mode. She's never come close, but she will go around and around the turkey pen and even though I yell at her and grab her, she still is trying. It's insane! We had to buy her a shock collar last year because she runs off our property if she sees something. So she wears her collar all the time now, and it's to the point we can get her brain 'turned off' with the high pitched noise the collar makes instead of using the shock now... but man, she won't EVER get over this. The collar instructions say that the dog will eventually learn to listen to you if you yell at the same time you use the collar, but she is the kind that doesnt give up. I think she's just the way she is and she'll have to wear that collar forever. So frustrating!! The only up side this dog has going for her is that she is 12 lbs and I can go pick her up and throw her in the house.
