Consolidated Kansas

Danz, work goes a lot faster when you have a partner to work with. I do a lot of it myself, but it's hard to stay motivated out there. I think the weather is what is really spurring me on here lately. Oh- and I had a chick that was plugged up this morning. I took your advice and instead of breaking out the water, I just plucked it off. The poor baby screeched! It took off quite a bit of fluff and it did leave a few pin pricks of blood. But the plug was HUGE!! I was so worried about her, but about 30 mins later she did poo. I stood out there to be sure. I thought I had been looking at everyone, but I think I must have missed her. By the time I saw her this morning, she was lethargic and laying down. Now (around noon) she seems much better. She is my smallest chick- she is a Polish.

I roofed my little nest box this morning. I even finished framing it in with the trim. I have pictures... going to go upload them now.

ETA: Btw -- thanks to everyone reassuring me about my chicks. I think Sharol has it right, I'm def worrying about them and watching them closely and picking them all up and looking them all over. No more clicking noises from anyone. So Renee must have been right! Whew. This is stressful!! LOL

I didn't even realize Yate center auction was today, thanks for reminding me Danz. I was going to stop by his house on the way to a b-day party that we have to go to that way tonight, but I gaurentee he's down there at the auction. O if anybody needs a boer buck this guy's brother just no saled one last weekend. Only 3 yrs old but he is hard on fences and the guy wants out of goats so he is selling him. Purebred unregistered boer, solid dark red, he says that he throws very nice kids, and wants $200 for him.

OKay, first picture show the nest box and the trim I put around the top and then the metal flashing I nailed down on top of it so I can lay the felt paper. Then the progression after that. I also finished up the trim on the front of the box- but i haven't taken a pic of it yet. It started to rain on me! So I had to move tools fast and pick up. OH- the second picture shows the roof I did on my own on the main building! Ridge cap looks gorgeous!

Great job! I envy you being able to get that all done. My arms would have quit about half way through.
And You got rain???????????????
I am so jealous. I actually would like it to wait until night time anyway, but there is no way I'm going to get all I need to done today.
I got the ducks herded up and culled out my excess drakes. I sure hope I saved my original drakes. It's so hard to tell sometimes. I just got a call from the buyers and they are in Kansas City on their way here.
I opened the pen to let the blind duck out but she is still in there. The chickens came in to keep her company and she seems content.
I did some online work earlier so that is of the way for a week or so.
I have some flower bulbs to get planted but don't know if I want to tackle that or work on the duck aviary. Man! Does it ever end??

Okay, ran back out and took this picture. I really wanted to show off the trim work that completes the nest box!

Danz, sounds like today is a busy day for you! Exciting that you are getting rid of your excess drakes! Maybe you could just keep your blind duck with your mandarians in the aviary? Would they be nice to her?

Thanks, Ritter! I'm all jazzed about my progress and I really didn't want to stop! I mean, we NEED this rain... but right when I was so motivated and making good progress-- kind of a bummer.

Hawkeye-It looks awesome. Any chicken would be proud to call that home!

Sometimes on the pasty butts if there is a really big, hard clump I take a pair of needle nose pliars or a hemostat and break it up just a tad before I pull the whole thing off. Sometimes I just take a pair of old scissors and cut it off, but be VERY careful you do not cut the chickie's skin!

I did NOTHING on my cages today. Hubby and I went to an auction. I did get a few things for the chickens, and DH got a big fan to install in the barn for ventillation. I wanted to stay longer and pick up some other things, but it was going to be a long time until they sold and I really needed to get home and get ready for work.

Does anybody know of an epoxy or something I could use to fix the bottoms on a couple waterers? You know, the ones with the red tray at the bottom. I have a couple that are cracked and I sure would like to save them. Surely there is some kind of glue or epoxy that will "weld" the plastic bac together.

I fixed a couple of those with locktite glue which is better than super glue, then went over the seems inside and out with a hot glue gun to seal it. In retrospect I should have been more patient and used silicone instead cause it would hold up better. At any rate the darn things broke back out after a couple of months. That plastic gets brittle then it breaks really easily. Less trouble I think to buy new bottoms.

According to Radar, looks like most everyone is getting rain but me! I planted a bunch of flower bulbs today and that probably totally jinxed me. Got the chickens and ducks picked up. I hope that reduces food intake around here. Had 6 baby ducks hatch in the last 24 hours. I really don't have facilities for them right now. Oh well. I love those babies.
