Yesterday was all kid stuff for us here, too. I didn't get ANYthing done on the coop. We went to church, and then carved pumpkins-- that takes a lot longer than you think it will. And then we had a Trunk or Treat back at the church again. It broke the day up enough that when we had some down time, it wasn't enough to do anything. I think it is supposed to be nice and warm today-- said Wichita was a high of 71??? Yes please!!! ha! It's only 44 right now, but as soon as it warms up, I'm back at it. We're so close now!!

Checoukan, oh I bet those OE are just so stinkin' adorable! I saw a lot of really great ones at the Kansas State Fair this year. And I'm not kidding- there were more of those than any other breed! There were TONS of them! I think that must be the breed of choice for 4-H'rs, since it's usually all I see. But I can understand why, they are cute!

Okay-- just got an email a minute ago! This is what the hatchery wrote me about my WCB Polish. They didn't explain what happened at all! No explanation as to why they are all mottled. Sigh. And they gave me credit back, but it's not on my credit card, just a credit with the hatchery.... which means I'd have to order from them again to use my money. Ah well.

Hello Loralee,

Sorry you had issues. I apologize for the inconvenience. We gave you
credit for the White Crested Black Polish chicks that looked like the
bottom picture. You have a credit on account of $18.25 that can be used
anytime in the future.

Thank you,
Meyer Hatchery,
Cindy

Oh forgot to add-- this is the letter I sent them. I didn't really want my money back- just for them to tell me what happened.

Greetings,

Well, I need to introduce myself. My name is Rosie, I live in SE Kansas. I have always had a few chickens around just for eggs. Started messing around with the Old English bantams, and fell totally in love with these little chickens. Then, my sister (ivywoods) needed somewhere to go with her birds she had:bow so she brought them to me.
I have Black Rosecombs, Old English in bantams. Larger breeds, Golden Lakenvelders, Black Copper Marans, Silver Americana, Wheaton Americanas, and then some hens in the hen house .

I love working with the kids, and our group has come a long way. I am hoping to maybe make a couple of shows, hopefully Hutchinson, and maybe Sedelia in the spring. All of my birds this year are late may and june hatches, so they have not come into there adult feathers yet so they will not show all that well this fall

, but look out in the spring!

I will be selling 3 pairs of my oe's, they are of the blue/red color pattern. One of these pullets is a blue/red splash....Anyway glad to be here.

Remeber, they usually do not raise the eggs that they hatch. They have people breed the birds, and then pick up and pay the breeders for the eggs. You can not always be sure if the breeder had something else get in the pen. Doesn't happen alot, but it does. Sorry you did not get what you wanted, maybe you can find something nice up at Hutchinson, ivywoods said you were going to go.

So exciting that you're in SE area! All of my grandparents (and my parents) grew up in or around Cherokee Country! And when I was a kid, I went to school in McCune, Ks. Have you heard of that town? It's really tiny. But my uncle and cousins still live in McCune (in the country) and we get out there from time to time. We always come down for Memorial Day to decorate the graves in McCune and in Pittsburg. I LOVE Chicken Annies! One of my grandma's moved into Girard for about 30 years after they sold their farm. So, I spent many years on the square, taking swim lessons at the Girard pool in the summers and going to vacation bible school there. Good times. We still have a lot of land down there, so my dad takes me down there and he's trying to teach me the ins and outs of farming. (we have tenants, but he wants me to learn it anyway). So I'm really familiar with that area! That is so cool that you're down there.

Very cool that you're helping the 4-H too! My oldest boy is now old enough to join, so we signed up last month.

Of course, we're going to do poultry.

I know this is kind of late, but I just got back late last night from Missouri. IVY, your BC Marans chicks are adorable! They look like they're doing great. I will get some pics on here later today of my new Speckled Sussex when I get time to get out there.

Wow! Active thread this morning.

Danz- Hopefully the weather will be nice today and you can get more done. Your mandarin pen is so neat. I'm eager to see those beautiful little guys paddling around in there!

Hawkeye-Hey! You promised pictures of the progress you made on the coop.

Trisha44- Hope you had a good time in MO. I think the speckled sussex are beautiful birds, so yes, we would love to see pics. They were a breed I considered getting, but right now I am FULL with as many varieties as I can manage.

Rosie, I wish you could have seen how puzzled I was when I opened that box and found the two pullets you had hidden in my car. Danz was there, and I'm sure she thought I was nuts. I guess I haven't told everyone here that story!

When I came home from my "sister's week" with my two sisters at Rosie's place near Columbus, KS, my two sisters helped me load my jeep with all my stuff, chickens, poultry supplies, a cage I had left with Rosie, boxes of jelly, canning supplies and of course clothes, etc.

On my way home I stopped at Danz' place to purchase some seramas.

I wanted to show her the beautiful little silver duckwing old english I had purchased at the show in Sedalia, MO. I saw a box with a pullet's eye peeking out at me, so I opened it. There were two birds in there instead of a trio.
ep.gif
They were not silver duckwing.

I had no clue for a minute what the heck was going on. For a minute I thought perhaps my little SDOE rooster had escaped or something.
barnie.gif
I finally figured out that Rosie had slipped these pretty little black breasted red OE's in the car without my knowlege. Well, they have found their place in with my little BBRed OE, and all seem to be doing well.

By the way, thank you, Rosie!

Here are some pics of my new Speckled Sussex, they're not the best, but the birds are kind of scared still & won't let me get too close to them yet. They're about 5 months old right now & haven't laid yet.
