Chooks, thanks for the tuna hint. I will try that tomorrow.

Still no egg.

Danz, My wishes for you health to improve are now coming you direction. I changed my timer to follow your advise. I started laying pellets 2 weeks ago when my crumbles finally ran out. they have treats of greens, yogurt, chicken treat and mill worms. They are beautiful girls and they follow me everywhere I go. I hope they give me eggs soon. I love backyardchicken.com for this forum full of nice, wonderful, caring people. It's not like the working world at all and I love it!

Goodnight Y'all!

Does Gage county NE count as close enough to KS to join in? 8 guineas so far, getting chickens in spring. I think we will just get hens, little kids here and I don't think roosters and kids are good together.

I'm not very familiar with geography to know where Gage county is (I'm from originally from MA), but welcome!

News of the day... I fell face first into a bunch of chicken doodoos. So smelly and gross. I usually use a cat pooper scooper, but yah know. I guess I'm a real life chicken mom.

Hiya!

We welcome anyone, even those who have no connection to our area. We're spread all over, too.

You're brave with all of those guineas...they freak me out a little bit. I bet you have no issue with ticks!

Roos can be fine with kids, but it depends not only the temperament of the breed, but also on the way the bird is raised. My youngest daughter is the chicken whispering spellbinder, and we have lots of roos- never had an issue with one!

Welcome!!

I have a rowdy 8 DD, 7 DS, 6 DD and 3 DS, plus 11 weeks pregnant. No sure roosters mix with that. The guineas just showed up, thought the porch was home, they are docileish and tame. So DH made his shed into a guinea coop.

Welcome Tarja. I live just a little ways south of the Nebraska line, but I am to the east of you in Brown, County, KS. I have guineas, too. I love those crazy, noisy birds. Mine follow me around wanting their "candy" which is a little cracked corn.

My ameraucanas are about 7 months old. So far the only ones laying are the wheatens. The black, silver and lavenders are taking their own sweet time. I've been getting pullet eggs from the wheatens for about 2 weeks now.

I really like my guineas. I have 8 that are my original and a couple of offspring that they hatched. They are quiet or were until I moved the others out near them. I have 30 more that I hatched. Those are the noisy ones that I am just holding over until spring, hopefully to make a little more off of them. Then I have 4 more that run free and think they are chickens. I like them the best. They act all freaky over little things but when it is food time they are right at my feet begging and pushing the chickens back so they can get the first feed. IT amazes me that a bird that is that heavily bodied can fly like they can. It defies all reasoning.
Welcome Tarja, Glad to see you here. None of my roosters are aggressive at all. I think it is much how they are raised, as it is breed. If you pick a docile breed chicken to begin with your chances of having a docile rooster are much better I think.
Trish I'm so with you on the arthritis. That is the main reason why I have metal all over. It has destroyed my joints and continues to do more so all the time. It amazes me how one can learn to live with pain and still function. I have learned that physical activity often makes me hurt worse in the long run but the endorphins it produced helps you with the pain level. Rather than become sedentary I try to work hard. Usually by early evening I'm spent though. I refuse to become dependent on pain pills.
I tell everyone my chickens gave me back my life. A couple years ago I could barely walk. Now most of time you couldn't tell anything was wrong. I know no matter how lousy I feel they depend on me to get out and care for them.
Hawkeye, are you feeling any better?

Danz, I know exactly what you mean about just having to live with pain, I live with it every single day, some days more, some less. Weather plays a big part in it too, I feel like my body is a barometer. I'm like you, I love the warmer weather, the cold makes you hurt so much more. Last night my knees were both hurting so bad. I take Celebrex for my arthritis, but the only pain medicine I take is at night to help me sleep, otherwise I don't sleep much for the tossing & turning. I also agree that it helps to stay busy & to have a purpose, which our chickens give us. I also have two very small dogs that are my babies & live in the house. My DH does not understand why I am so focused on my chickens, but he will one day, he is developing arthritis too, he is just not bad with it yet like me. I will have the new GP puppy soon also to keep me busy, wish me luck with that. She will be my first LGD & it's all new to me. The breeder I'm getting her from though is so patient & has answered so many questions for me already. I'm excited & a little nervous at the same time, hoping things go well with it all. I know she is just a little puppy, just not like one I have ever had before. I will have to explain to my granddaughter when she comes here that the puppy is a working dog & not like the ones in the house.

Welcome to the newcomers, I haven't been here really long myself, but I have appreciated being welcomed & the friendly atmosphere here. I have learned so very much from the people at BYC, read all you can, it's very educational & helpful. You can find answers to about anything if you look or ask.

I hope everyone is feeling better today.

Danz, I have a friend who is wanting some keets or at least a hen for his lonely guinea male. Do you think you could help out sometime this Spring, or perhaps would be willing to give up a hen?
