Absolutely. They can have one now. I really am not crazy about feeding this many all winter. In fact I'd sell a couple if (s)he wants them.

Ok, we are down to Wyandottes or Orpingtons, I think. Are those good options around kids? The kids are ok with the guineas, but I don't let the guineas out of their pen unless I am out with everyone.

We love the orps, but little Bonnie (a "paint" from Chooks) decided to be my grandsons BCF today. She followed him around all afternoon.

I have a GLW and a BO. The Buff Orpington is much more mellow than the GLW. Vic (the GLW) is the 2nd in command, and when my head chook has a problem with one of the new girls, she sends Vic in as the enforcer. Vic also disciplines the dog if he gets too close to the flock. Marlena (the buff) is very calm and sweet -- not at all alpha.

Chooks, I am getting ready to have surgery so I doubt I'll make it that way soon. I wanted to take a trip to Vic and Ladonnas real soon to pick up a couple more pheasants but don't have a pen available yet. I am selling these for $10 each but because of my circumstances I'd sell for $8 each if someone comes here to get them. Tarja my daughter raises orpingtons. She is going to send me some eggs later this winter to incubate. In her experience the females are very calm and love attention but the roosters tend to get pretty mean at some point. She has had to rehome them all after some time. She's one of those chicken owners that sit and hold and talk to her chickens every day.
I would suggest you check into Brahmas as well. I talked her into trying them and she now totally loves them. They are also a huge docile chicken that lays quite well. I have Wyandottes as well which are very pretty but they sometimes are hand biters when you gather eggs. They aren't quite as tame as some of the others. If you want lots of eggs, Orps are probably the best choice. If you want a good docile breed that also lays well but without mean roosters I would recommend brahmas. Now that is just my opinion and I am sure others will differ.

Hey guys. I posted something earlier in the diseases/injuries thread but no one is answering. I think my hen has pink eye but I'm not for sure. It's a tiny bit swollen and a little red but she's acting just fine. Any idea one what it could be and how to treat it?? Or even if it's a problem?

Chooks posted something a while back on treating pink eye. I am sure she would have an answer. I did some research because I had a couple ducks with an eye infection. My brother in law is a pharmacist. He said to just buy neosporin, the kind that doesn't have the pain killer in it. Is is virtually the same composition as the prescription eye ointment a doctor or vet would give you but much cheaper. If it is just beginning there is a spray you can use called veterycin (it's kind of pricey) to spray in the yee.I am

Well with everything else going on I got home today and my GP female was obviously ready to breed. I had a lab here from a couple miles away. My male GP was all bent out of shape and trying to keep him away. One shot with the 22 got him running. I don't need any half breed dogs. But my dogs just tied so we are probably going to have puppies like it or not. I had intended to pen her when she got ready but missed my cue.

We may just have to take one off your hands. A little while ago some coyotes came over the hill our dogs heard them and took off. Runt the younger one went after them, and Buddy, who has always been the one to take the lead just stayed behind. He really has lost a lot of his stamina. The vet told us he might not live a lot longer, and that was last year. There wasn't anything wrong with him, just age. I sure hate to think about loosing him. He's a beautiful dog, so personable and a GREAT guardian.

Just be careful. If your dog is in heat, that lab will probably be back.
