Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I'm glad you didn't lose your dog with that infection. The breeder I got my Yorkie from just recently lost her best female after having a litter from just that. She just got very ill after having the puppies & her organs all started failing & she died very suddenly. She was only able to save one puppy from the litter with no momma to feed them & he only weighs like 2 pounds now & she ended up keeping him. She still cries about it often, it was pretty shocking to her, she had no warning, really sad. That momma dog was the most beautiful Yorkie I've ever seen, she weighed about 4 pounds & just had beautiful hair & features. She was a champion for sure. Now she is looking for another female.

Love the pen. Looks like they are doing great. For anyone who is interested my federal permit came in today and i'm ready to sell 5 normal colored and 1 silver bahama pintails

Danz I have to agree with you on wanting to loose babies instead of a female (I had a rat get bred to old and almost lost her). I also have to admit that females of most species are smarter and the males are just big and "dumb"

Thanks. I love the ducks. They are gorgeous.

I am thinking I might get some oxytocin to give her a shot while she is in labor. Maybe it will help her clean out. We used to inject our sows with that when they were pigging. I'll have to ask the vet what he recommends. I don't want anything to happen to my dog. That is principally why I didn't want to breed her again. I care about her and the pups really were a load for her to handle. If she whelps again I will start giving them supplementary milk as soon as I can. And you can bet both she and my male will be fixed as soon as the pups are weaned.
When I had goats I lost my favorite goat giving birth. The kid was just too big for a first time nanny. It just breaks my heart. I called the vet out but he literally had to cut the baby up to get it out and she died anyway. It makes me feel guilty for ever letting them go through it. Thank goodness chickens pump out eggs easily most of the time. I've only lost 2 to being egg bound. Regardless I felt sad.

Hi Kansas Kid! Silver bahama pintails... I have never heard of them, but they "sound" pretty. I'll have to google some images.

Danz-Oh, I'm so glad you have someone to help with the chores while you are recovering. I'm sure that takes a lot off your mind, too. You will have enough just recovering from such an extensive surgery.

Maybe this time your female won't have as many pups and it will be easier for her since it's not her first litter. One can always hope.

Danz, my friend would love to buy 2 guinea hens of each color if you are willing to part with so many. I'll be going to Wichita next week and will swing by for her...it ought to be a nice quiet drive home, right?

When is your surgery? I want to make certain to get them prior so you have less to manage!

I AM SOOOOOOO wanting the dogs...I need a pair of the pups, one for me, one for my friend.

I built a new coop yesterday. It's going to be housing my ducks through the winter (assuming my eggs ever get here) and one of my color projects. I'll post pics later.

Gotta tell you all- the tendon pain and my excruciating arms/wrists/elbows? GONE. Took about 36 hours on Doxycycline. Gone. I'm still on it and will be for a couple more weeks- they're treating for Lyme even though I tested negative twice. This is amazing. Months of pain. Gone.

The help is Thanksgiving week only but at least while I'm in the hospital I will know my birds will be taken care of. When I was showing him all I had to do I believe he was a bit taken back by the volume of pens and cages that had to have attention. He is going to be hunting each morning but said he could be here by early afternoon which is better than nothing. Hopefully one of my sisters will be available to help off and on after that if I need it a few days. I am not used to asking for help. I've always been a do it myself kind of girl.
I have a feeling that DH and my kids will be telling me again that I need to cut back and that I've taken on too much. I think they are just afraid I will kick off someday and they'll be stuck taking care of my birds!

The only ones I am super concerned about now are the babies and the ones in the incubator. Had I known about this I would have held back putting eggs in that are due to hatch that week.
I normally feed my birds some more near their bedtime but they probably won't be getting that. They'll survive I'm sure. Giving them an extra treat is a way to get them to go to their pens.
I've got to take my Mom to church today then come home and work on getting one last chicken house cleaned out. I have a bunch of plants I need to move to the basement but I don't think my back is up to that today. I really hate fall and spring just because it seems I have 10 times more than normal to do.

That's awesome. I wonder if it could have been some other tick transmitted disease. There are several.
My surgery is the 22nd so this coming week is about it that I will be around. I will be gone part of this Tuesday for pre-op stuff. Yes I can part with that many hens. I would of course prefer to get rid of the males but the hens are the noisiest ones anyway. Maybe DH will be happier that way. I don't have them separated so I guess we'll have to just listen and see if we can figure it out. I would go ahead and try to separate them if I have time but there is so much going on this week I can't guarantee it.
What kind of ducks are you hatching? I've got a new duck coop done except the roof. I hope when DH has a day off he will get it on for me. He wants to use metal again and I don't like working with metal. I cut myself every time! Of course I built it in the barn so now I have to figure out how to get it moved. I built it on top of a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood on sawhorses. So now I have to figure out how to lower it. My duck pen is small but the ducks free range all the time anyway unless it is super cold.

Fabulous, and fabulous timing!

I'll be coming back from your way Friday afternoon- would that work?

I'm going to be hatching Cayugas (theoretically...we all know how planning for hatches goes) and they'll go in the 8x8 I built yesterday with a 15' x 75' covered run. The coop is my only bare floor coop and will be converted to a storage shed once the winter is over, with a proper raised coop for the chickens in there and a smaller coop for the ducks, if I end up with any. I figured since there isn't any heat out there, I'd do a deep litter floor for the winter and allow the compost heat to go for this one year. I'm not fond of histoplasmosis, so I don't like the soil floors.

I got tested for 9 tick-borne illnesses and tested negative on each. All of my rheumatoid tests came back neg and they looked at another Lyme test and still got a neg...but there are something like a dozen Lyme tests and some folks NEVER show it but have every clinical sign and respond well to treatment, so I'm glad to just treat what it appears to be- and that seems to be working well. We have a connective tissue disorder in the family (Ehlors-Danlos) and my little sisters have both had spinal fusions, so when joints appear to be falling apart, it really makes me want to take aggressive measures.

I did have a bullseye tick bite this year, and marked it on the calendar, notified my Dr., etc...so we're pretty confident.

I'm getting a KitchenAid mixer off Craigslist this afternoon! We're going to be able to make a bunch of stuff we never get around to making now, and I'm just delighted!
