hawkeye---how much baytril did the bird recieve today? Be careful baytril will kill and does'nt take long to do it.
Oh, the drawing of blood. The only time I seen blood drawn on a chicken...... easy now..... the only way they could get enough blood to take a specimen was they had to go to the heart....well, I don't think you want to do that.....maybe your bird vet may know of some other way? I hope so.

It's super easy to inject them! Thanks to you all talking about it, I did it tonight with no issues. Zorro is eating, so I take that as a good sign. At least he's not flopping on his side anymore! He went down SO fast today! But then again, he bounced back fast, too! This is the darnedest illness they have! Well... he's the only one really acting like that. The other splash is very sneezing, I think he might be next on my "hit" list for the Baytril, he isn't looking so hot either. But at least he's standing and doing well enough. Yeah, I think it would be unlikely they picked it up during shipping... so I don't know what to think. The breeder seems truely baffled.. that or she doesn't want to admit to anything. I heard from her again today. If anything, she's been awesome about responding and talking with me. I think it's sweet that you have babies in the house while you recover. WHY NOT!? heheheee!!

TNTBlake- I went to "El Paso Animal Clinic" 233 South Georgie Derby, KS 67037 316-788-1561
They said they don't do a lot of chickens-- but they do parrots and other kinds of birds. So they just treated him like a parrot.

There are only 3 vets there that treat birds, so be sure you ask for one of the vets that do. Personally, I would recommend Dr. Oehmke (who I saw today) and Dr. Jeff Herod-- who is very easy to work with and I always ask for either one of them. Either one of them will allow to you do what I did- take home meds to inject. I'm going to bet the other vet who deals with birds will not. So keep that in mind!

MsjFrizzle-- so good to see you on here! Wow, you are out scouting and doing your homework! I think that is sad about Scott City. Hope to see you around more! I miss you!

The vet said .25cc of Baytril twice a day. Do you think that might be too much? Maybe only do it ONCE a day instead????? I usually do what I think is best, anyway. And if that means lowering the daily dose, I'm fine with that. Thoughts?

If pouring on is there a wait on eating eggs?

I use the pour on my roosters, and brood stock, and young birds. Right now, is a good time to delice as the birds are slowing down on laying. If you worry about that, do 1/2 of your flock now, and the other half later. I am able to check my hens pelvic bones (more like gristle). I know which hens are laying, and which ones are not. Helps a bunch!

I only give 1/4cc a day and no more, remember baytil can kill!

Okay, I think I'll go with that. Vet said twice.. but he also said he doesn't do chickens a lot either! I already gave Zorro the second dose tonight. I hope he'll be okay! I'll just do ONE tomorrow. Thanks!!

Cool! I grew up in Derby and Herod is who always took care of our dogs! He is a fabulous vet but I didn't know he treated chickens though!

TntBlake... Dr Herod is who took care of my turkey this summer when she got heat stroke and nearly died. They kept her for like 5 days straight! They tube fed her food and water every day and gave her injections. I would never say they are the best bird vet (I just don't know of anyone else!)-- but they do know a little and they are willing to work with you. I have used them for years for my own dogs. My horse vet (who is in Mulvane)-- irony, because they treat every farm animal except chickens! I've even seen goats and sheep in there. ha! Anyway, I've known Jeff (dr herod)personally for years. He married one of my friends from HS.

Hawkeye, that's the Vet that did both of my little dogs spay surgeries. I lived in Derby for 23 years & I still go back a lot. I used to use Dr. Oemke also & even after being gone so many years he remembers me. I didn't know they treated chickens though.

Their practice has grown a lot. Still the same tiny little building, but they are always remodeling it and they now have like 4 vets on staff instead of the two they started with. I think they also must do some kind of "residency" for new vets, because I see brand new vets in there ALL the time and they leave after about 6 months. Anyway, when I have a serious problem, I always request Herod or Oehmke, but then you wait longer. If you're just in for a set of shots- I ask for next available vet so I can get out of there at a decent time. They are always packed. But fortunately, they work everyone in as quickly as they can.

Well, Zorro is alive this morning. I guess I didn't kill him off with the second baytril injection last night. Hope it kicks in soon. Preschool day today, which means I'll be running all over today. Sigh. I'm tired of Preschool! Ready for them to just go to school all day so I don't have to drive all over creation.
