Ag, vet or engineering? hehe! My dad graduated from there- got his EE degree there, they have a great engineering dept.

TntBlake-- hope you have fat birds! Mmmm.. I think it's a great idea, I just don't know if I could do it. Maybe if I didn't love any of my birds, or they had problems-- like pecking on others.. Anyway, I'd keep the broody!

Danz, I bet that cast iron rooster is so neat! I need to find stuff like that! I do have my bell that i got on eBay, but I still have not put it on the chicken coop yet. I may just wait until Spring to put it on.

Trish- GREAT pics of those pups! They are so adorable! I love puppy breath, too!

Chooks, great to see you 'back' again! Sounds like you've been super busy! It's fun, but I'm sure its nice to be home, too.

OKay, so Zorro got only ONE Baytril shot today. And I gave a shot to Yoda, too. (the other splash that has similar symptoms) I was going to wait until tomorrow, but he just didn't look like he was doing any better today. So whatever, I have a whole bottle of this Baytril, might as well give it to him. I gave him a little less than .25cc because he's smaller than Zorro.

Found out I'm getting an incubator for x-mas! I put it on my list and my MIL was having a hard time figuring out which one it was so she called me to ask, and I found an extra coupon 10% off the $99-- so it ended up being $90. So excited!

Everyone talks about Tylan... is this just as good as Baytril... or better? Or is it more specific to respiratory? Just curious if I should buy some of it now while I don't need it... or just stick with keeping Baytril on hand.

Hawkeye, there was this ad on CL for a chicken for free, it was young yet & they were talking about keeping it in an aquarium & how it didn't like to be held & all. They said they would tell whoever came to get it what they feed it. It was just a very strange ad, I can't imagine these people will keep any of the chicks they got & obviously don't know how to care for them. Congrats on the incubator, are you getting the Brinsea like you were looking at? We'll have to compare notes next spring when we start incubating eggs. I hope to use mine next spring some time as soon as I can build my breeding coop & get the breeds separated. I'm sure we can find lots of helpful people on here to give us hints along the way.

So far the pups are doing well. Lily, the white one is so much more outgoing than Jasmine. I'm trying to draw her out of her shell, but it's slow with her, she's very reserved & what I call shy & cautious. They were out all day today in the yard with the chickens out & they don't pay a whole lot of attention to them, which I guess is a good thing. They found my water garden today & I think with the plants on top they didn't realize there was water in there until they fell in. I came out to check on them & they were both wet on their bottom half. It didn't seem to bother them too much, they just went on like nothing had happened. Danz, I am handling them every time I go out, I just can't see ignoring them just because they're supposed to be LGDs. I know there are some people on BYC that would argue all day about that & the breeder I got them from would scoff too. But how do you have dogs & not give them attention & love, I just can't do it. It's not like we're going to bring them in the house & make house dogs out of them. They wouldn't like it in there anyway, they're used to being outside & I'm afraid our two spoiled babies in the house would protest. They didn't like it when I shut them up in the dog run tonight, they like being out, but we have to think of their safety since they're just babies yet. I let them out during the day when I can watch them. Today seemed to go all right with the pups & the rooster, so maybe he got it out of his system & he just wanted them to know he wasn't taking anything from them. He didn't come near them today at all, stayed with his hens like a good boy.

Dublin I'm in manhattan all the time I just live in Riley

I'll buddy list you and we'll have to get togather and talk birds sometime! I got great news yesterday everyone if that flyer that I posted a couple weeks ago pulls through for me I will have a contract selling coturnix quail eggs to a small grocery store in manhattan that specializes in locally produced food. I stopped into talk with them on a whim yesterday and they seemed very interested and said they will most likely try carrying them, starting in smaller amounts to test the market. By the time all is setup and running it will be spring 2013 but I felt a mile tall when I walked out of there.

She'll be fine with the others. They'll grow up and be fine together.

You done with chickens?

NO!! Never!! They are just not laying anymore so I don't want to feed them! I have had a bad run with my babies this summer/fall and have lost a lot/had a lot of roosters.I wish that there was somewhere to get POL birds around here but there isn't so I am just going to get more in the spring. We are planning to get meaties in early spring so I plan on ordering some egg layers when I order them. I can't believe I am going to have to buy eggs this winter. Yuck!

Not laying as in 5 years old, or just not right now? My older birds still lay reliably once they get past molt until about 5, then I get an egg or two a week. Yo might just wait them out, as feeding new birds until they lay is also costly.

Feeding excess roos beyond table size is less justifiable, however...unless a beloved pet.

Hi, Dublin!

Good job, Rittert!

Hey guys, I have to get rid of some of my chickens. They are eating us out of house and home and we can't afford all the food they are going through right now. We have 15 black star pullets and if I can talk my hubby into is an easter egger cockerel. They are 13 wks I think. They were born on Aug 23, 2011. If you live anywhere near me and would like some or all please let me know. We are asking $2 a piece or $30 for all of them.

Hi, Dublin!

Good job, Rittert!

My older girls are 2 and have slowed down and the others just don't lay as well as I wanted so I am butchering them and plan on getting high production birds. I think it is a waste of money to feed these big birds for one egg per bird a week. I have people that buy my eggs and I can't provide them if I only get a dozen or a dozen and a half a week out of 7 birds. I am keep one older girl as a broody and she happens to be the only one we are attached too. The only pet out of all our birds.

TNT, why don't you put a light in their house and see what happens. It's the moulting time and the time of year plus the age they are just taking a break. Of course if you have a source for some good layers and already have an appointment to butcher it is a mute point. But if you are still looking for your layers you might as well see if you can improve their performance in the mean time.
Hawkeye, how's your chickens this morning? Sure hope they improve. I need to get some of these higher powered antibiotics to inject. Not that I have an immediate need but sure would like to have them on hand.
The birds all act starved this morning. I really wasn't ready to get out in the cold to feed them just yet.

I do have an appt for tomorrow for the butcher. I am taking them today and dropping them off for tomorrow morning. They laid the dozen to a dozen and a half during the spring and summer. I am getting no eggs now.
