Consolidated Kansas

Wow, ya'll have been chatty this morning!

I had never heard of/seen the breeder list on BYC! Wow- who knew?!?! I checked it out and didn't see a single listing for Kansas, or even hardly any other State or that matter. I think that list is largely unknown on BYC as whole. It was also very difficult to navigate through and set up in a very un-user friendly manner. That's too bad, because as a designer myself, I think that list could be done in a different way that would be much easier on the eyes and easier to search through, too. Ah well. I have nothing to contribute chicken wise-- we'll be keeping all our babies in the Spring (until we know what they look like as they mature). The silkie exhibitionist tell me that you have to wait until about 4 months before you can determine quality, much less gender. But it would sure be fun to see a list if I decide to branch out into getting other varieties of birds.

Well, we got back from church this morning and brought home fried chicken for lunch. Mmmm... It rained here!! Sheesh. I was going to try to get hay put out in the pasture and now it's a muddy mucky mess again! ARGH! My tractor just sinks in this stuff.

Our power was off this morning. About 4am it went off and didn't turn back on until 7:30am. That was not fun. Makes me really appreciate our tankless water heater-- no having to wait for an entire tank to heat up. Just took a shower the minute the power came back on and had immediate heat. This is a busy day, I'm relaxing for a bit right now. We still have a x-mas program to go to for my little ones that are in Preschool (at the church). It's a potluck, and they said for us to bring casseroles. I'm not cooking, though. I'm going to make a run to Dillons before we go back to church and pick up a ton of fried chicken and a dessert and call it good. Too tired after wrangling kids and going to two services this morning. (we go to the 9:30 service and then my oldest son sang in the 11pm service.)

The formatting or software obviously needs updating-- as shown by lack of use by the BYC members in the Breeders List. This is something the site owner or manager needs to take up on their own, as even myself, with having a lot of experience with writing code, using HTML and setting up Cascading Style Sheets.. I would not know where to start with this! Some websites restrict the kinds of plug ins necessary to do that kind of thing (depending on their frame work). I've had to circumvent built in restrictions on websites I've worked on in the past. It's not as easy as you think-- to just simply say, 'alright, some one step in and fix it'. For someone to do that, they would need a lot of control/permissions over the back end of this site. I highly doubt they are going to give one of us permission to do that! LOL!!

But it's a nice thought, anyway.

ETA: Just wanted to be clear that hosting and owning a website is not the same thing. Hence the problems I've had with restrictions in the past. I own a website myself. I then went with a hosting company that provided the frame work, and that is where you can get into trouble. If I decided to select their frame work, I would then save myself hours upon hours of code writing from scratch. Which is what I did-- so then, you have the restrictions set into it, which is where the problems occur. I have spent many hours pulling my hair out writing a CSS to circumvent a code they had built into the background that I wasn't even able to touch! But it can be done.. Anyway, just wanted to be clear on that. Without knowing who is hosting, who wrote their code, what their frame work is... see where I'm going with this???

Hawkeye, I kind of think it was decided to just put the info on Candace's web site with a link there under her profile. That way it isn't some big deal on BYC to get things approved & all. We all could access it, after all it's for us KS people & we would contribute to it. I don't think that state info has been updated for a very long time & like everybody said there isn't even anything on there for KS. If Candace wants to do it & we all contribute I think it would be great. We just have to decide what all information we want there.

I don't see a problem with both. Admin here is always looking for suggestions, and I guess at this point my suggestion would be to make it more accessible. It would be nice, I think, if the breeders list was accessible through a link on the homepage, rather than having to go to the forum and hunt for it. If the link hadn't been posted here, I'm not sure I would have found it right away. I am not near as savvy about computers and software as some of you, but it seems like it would be "do-able." Perhaps if it was easier to find more people would use it here on BYC and see the value of it.

I think Candace's idea is great, too, and if she wants to do that, why not?

Well the problem with doing anything on BYC is that there has to be someone to keep the info updated or it's useless. I could tell when I finally found that page that it hasn't been updated in a very long time & obviously nobody wants to maintain it. The information is very tedious & hard to navigate & it totally needs to be re-organized. But it has to be done by someone who knows how to do that sort of thing & is willing to update it & there-in lies the problem with that. If someone suggests updating the info they have on here then the admin is going to want someone to do it. I have been a part of organizations before & even held positions in office & it's extremely hard to find people who are actually willing to volunteer to do anything. One example right now I can give you is that I'm on the Rural Water District board for our water district here, which is a small district compared to others & we have had a heck of a time keeping the required 5 board members. When people move we have periods of time when we don't have 5 because nobody wants to do anything. They have lots of complaints & suggestions, but nobody wants to volunteer for anything.

I so know what Hawkeye is talking about. I took a college class on HTML and we made a web page as part of our grade. Writing HTML is tedious. Of course many computers have programs that do it for you but then you need to know how to use those programs as well. Unless you know what you are doing these things can be highly time consuming and tedious. Thus the reason I asked Candace if she were willing to maintain it. I think it is a more than generous offer.
I think it is a wonderful idea and would be a benefit to all of us.
Well to change the subject I'm having just an awful day. I found my big red cochin rooster with an awful cold. He looks terrible. Looks like his face has been frost bit or something. I brought him in and put some vet RX in his nostrils and some in his water and now have him in a cage in my dining room. I am so not wanting him in here and he isn't happy about it either. I haven't gotten any antibiotics from the vet yet since I've not been driving. I've been going through the VetRX like crazy the last few days since the colds began here.
Before that I had been out feeding every one and the bantam polish were all just fine. After I got the rooster treated and caged I went back out to finish watering. And one of my polish roosters was laying there dead. No signs of injury or cold or anything. They had all been moving around just fine only 30 minutes earlier. He was still warm and not stiff so I had to find him immediately after he died. I've checked all the others in the house. No colds, no trama other than a pecked head here and there. It's got me baffled unless he had a heart attack or something. I hate it when I can't find an explanation for something like that.
Now of course it is Sunday and I can't get a thing to treat anyone with. Is the tylan available without a vet or does it require a vet to give it to you as well?

Danz, you can order the Tylan online without a script. I found it last time on eBay for a little cheaper, but I have also seen it on Amazon. Just do a Google search for it & check prices & then go to eBay & see what the current price is there. As with any of the antibiotics it's not cheap.

Also, Danz sorry about your roosters. It's weird you would just find the one dead like that with no sign of illness. I have read on here that lots of people are having problems with respiratory illness with their chickens right now. I need to give mine some VetRX probably too because the Marans still have lingering problems. They seem fine & are running around, but still have the honk sometimes.
