Consolidated Kansas

You know I was thinking this morning about when I had chickens before. I had them in this big metal drafty barn, I never used a heat lamp unless I had baby chicks out there, I didn't even have a brooder then for the meat chicks I raised & they did great. I bought chickens at swap meets & from backyard breeders & never thought twice about it. I didn't know anything about bio-security back then. I never had any illnesses or had to give any medications of any sort to any of my chickens. They laid winter & summer & I only lost one that I remember to a predator. So why is everyone having so much illness with their chickens now? Are there just more diseases out there now or are the things we're all doing causing the chickens to have lower immunity? It just makes me wonder what the difference is. People raised chickens for eons & didn't have all the medications & do all the things we do now & I'll bet they didn't really have that much of an issue either.

I guess we lucked out. We didn't get any rain and so far have just had about 1/2 inch of snow. They say there is more on the way, but we will see.

Those dirty, muddy GP's.... I'm always amazed at how they can come up looking like they have been wallowing in the mud with the pigs, and the next day be all pretty white again. How do they do it?

As far as the illness in chickens, I really have no idea, but I think a lot of the line breeding to get just a certain type does tend to compromise other factors that you aren't focusing on in your breeding. Maybe our ability to save unhealthy chicks and later hatch from them perpetuates a weaker chicken. Who knows?

Hawkeye, you must go into some type of tachycardia. Atrial, supraventricular or ventricular, huh?

I'm in management at Wal-Mart. On my shift I am second in command. I heard them page management to the jewelry department. The other manager usually takes those calls, or I do if I'm closer or they are tied up or something. Shortly I heard them page management to jewlery STAT! I hoofed it over as quick as I could to find a guy sitting at the edge of the counter, out cold. His wife was freaking out and the jewelry department person was standing there wide eyed. His wife was trying to keep him from falling on the floor. He only weighed about 300 lbs. I asked just enough questions to figure out that he had passed out while getting his ears pearced. I asked his wife his name while trying to help keep him from falling. I said his name firmly in his ear and he immediately opened his eyes and looked around all bewildered, wondering what happened. He was in a cold sweat, and if he hadn't awakened right away I was going to have to lower him to the floor. He said he was dreaming and was totally embarrassed about the situation. His wife was scared to death because she thought he was having a seizure and had never seen anyone pass out before. The other manager showed up and I sent her to get a wheelchair. I stayed with him until I was certain he was stable. The whole night turned out to be chaotic. I think the guy passing out was just a sign of things to come that night.

Just got this picture of one of my previous pups and her adoptive baby ducks I wrote about a week or two ago. I think it's preciousl Not the very best picture but still sweet.

I know what you mean about chickens. I had them back in the 70's and never gave them a second thought. When I think about the conditions they were raised in I am surprised any of them made it. My mother in law had some mutt dogs back then that got into the chicks and ate several but that was the only time I remember having predator problems. I have never had colds or anything with chickens before this year.
I honestly feel that a lot of disease is spread by wild birds now, and buying chickens elsewhere doesn't have that much to do with it. Most of us aren't going to buy a bird that looks diseased or sick regardless. I haven't ever bought an adult bird at a swap meet but have sold several. I personally wouldn't ruin my reputation by selling an ill bird. I also believe the extreme climate changes are a factor here. It's hard on all of us.

I just came in from taking care of the birds. TWO of the lights I had over the serama pens were burned out!

Those bulbs were less than 2 weeks old! I replaced them, but I hate to think what might happen if we loose power this winter. We had several days with actual temps of -18 and wind chills of over -50 degrees.

It's snowing right now, but still not terribly cold. The water in the unheated pans in the barn was not frozen, so I know they didn't get too cold overnight.

Danz-That is a wonderful picture of the duck dog! Aren't they amazing!

My leghorns laid quite a few eggs today. I was surprised. I will be able to fill an order today that I didn't think I could because I was sold out. I have some eggs in the fridge that I won't sell. They are marans eggs, and alot of my marans eggs have blood spots in them. I don't want to turn my customers off by selling them. It doesn't bother me, but I don't get them all eaten. It won't be a problem now that I am starting to incubate them, but the ones in the fridge right now I think I will scramble up and give to the birds for a special cold weather treat.

I had a lot of blood spots in my Maran eggs the first couple months they laid but I never find one now. Are your hens pretty young?
I just got in from feeding as well. It is still raining but it is starting to freeze on limbs and stuff. I had some sleet hit me in the face. It's kind of a mix of sleet and rain at this point. Ugh!
I had the GFI trip on the cord to the brooder house. So the light was off and I had two chicks that got smothered while they were all huddled together. It was still fairly warm in there so I don't think it had been off that long. DH had a stock tank heater plugged into the other outlet and a heat lamp to the old garage and I am guessing the tank heater turned on and tripped it. Or maybe it is just too wet out there.
I went downstairs and got some wrapping paper but I just couldn't make myself begin. I really need to tell myself it's almost Christmas and time to get my act together.

Can't believe you got snow! We still got nothing but rain and more rain! A little bit of sleet mixed in there, but mainly another depressing dark day. Sigh.

Wow, your walmart ordeal sounds crazy! I'm sure glad it all worked out and he was just passed out from having his ears pierced! I'm sure it will be a funny story much later for his wife to tell after she gets over the scare she had.

And yeah, I'm not sure what all the technical terms are for it all, it's been a long time since I really delved into it-- I started passing out in Highschool for no reason. Once, I fell out of the shower and hit the toilet and BROKE it. I woke up in a puddle of very cold water and my mom practically screaming the house down. It's like a wire is tripped, but I can usually feel the acceleration of my heart and it skip a beat or two or three and then sometimes the only thing I know after that is I'm waking up on the floor. My Dr warned me that it can lead to a heart attack if I'm not careful with my meds. And sure enough-- it did. That was the worst kind of pain and fear-- All I knew is that I thought I was being smothered by an elephant. My chest felt crushed under the weight I felt, and I couldn't breathe, and I couldn't talk.. and the pain was so intense. Anyway, I'm much more careful now!

Danz and Trish---
Very interesting theories on why our chickens seem to get sick. I do remember coyotes getting our chickens when I was a kid. My dad built a HUGE run for them after that. They used to free-range. He got tired of always getting the gun, and figured out a better way. I remember he put rail road ties all around the fence to keep the diggers out. It worked great. OH-- BTW, my vet that I took the chickens too, he said that the reason he wasn't going to test them (unless we HAD to) is because now a days, birds have every disease known. He said it's really rare to see them come in and not test positive to everything they test for. Although, they did test Seymore over the summer and they at least said she did not have cocci-- not sure what else they tested for. Anyway I was disheartened to hear that it's far too easy to get stuff.

Danz, that is such a great picture of your GP and ducks! I love the nose on the babies-- very protective. So sweet! So sorry about your chicks that got trampled.

I hope they weren't seramas! Tough enough that they die off unexpectedly anyway.

Well, I did a LOT of errand running today in Wichita, I'm exhausted.

The little ones were live wires and made it difficult to do anything. Very annoying.

Hawkeye believe it or not you'll look back on those times when the kids were wound up and wish they were back. I can't wipe the smile off my face when I think about some things that happened when I was shopping with my kids. All those little things that make you want to pull your hair out at the time are sure funny years later. But I do so empathize with you. I wouldn't want to go back no matter how much I miss it.
I guess if the chickens are all carrying disease and virus it would make sense that it would erupt when something stresses them and causes their immune system to go haywire. Humans carry all kinds of illness in their body as well waiting to get off balance or when your immune system is compromised. I guess the same would apply to birds.
I started wrapping presents. Got the paper on a few of them but nothing else. Now I'm to the point I need to look for more boxes. Anyone know a cool way to wrap books? I have many for my granddaughters and hate to just throw them in a bag or a box.

IVY, that sounds like quite a night, I agree, that will be a story to tell later on after the shock wears off for them. We didn't get any snow at all & the rain finally stopped thank goodness. It's just cold out there now. Yeah, I know I have wondered the same thing about the GPs, my puppies can just be muddy & wet all over & the next day they don't look like they were dirty except maybe a spot or two of mud that stuck really well. It must have to do with the texture of their fur or something. Mine were just soaked today & went back into their run & doghouse for awhile today, which kind of surprised me, but when I got ready to come out this evening to feed chickens & shut everybody up the two of them were sitting on the porch by the front door waiting for me. Oh, guess what I think my Lavender Ameraucanas are starting to lay. I got 2 green eggs today & they were both in the nests inside the coop, so I know it wasn't the EE hen Audrey because she lays outside in the straw in the run. Anyway, they were more greenish than blue, but I was excited that they're laying now.

Danz, I loved the pic of the dog & the ducks, that was adorable. We didn't get any sleet here, it's about 32 degrees here now. When I went out to feed puppies & shut up the chickens my hands got really cold, so I knew it was getting colder at that point. It makes my hands hurt for them to get so cold. My doc had told me not to let my hands get too cold because I have Raynaud's disease, so I'm supposed to have gloves on when I'm out. It's hard to do some things with gloves on though. I'll bet you're right about the chickens carrying around diseases & bacteria just like we do & it's not a problem until they get too stressed & then they get sick. It's the same thing with people too, we all have bacteria & usually we don't have a problem with it until we get too tired or stressed & then it overwhelms our immune system.

I've been working on rearranging furniture & stuff all day. I still don't have it all like I want it, but I'm getting there. I have had such a mess since we brought all of that stuff down from the attic & I have been sorting & putting some of it up on our buy, sell, trade site on FB. I've gotten rid of some of it, but still have some to go. I just gave away some free stuff to some young people tonight, that was kind of nice. Neither of them had much for Christmas decorations, so now they have some & it didn't cost them a cent. I thought that was better than taking it to Goodwill. There are a lot of people here in this town hurting this holiday season from the economy. I have some more to deliver to a lady tomorrow who doesn't have a car.
