Consolidated Kansas

I wish I had room for 1, verna, I'd snach 1 up in a heart beat. If any of you want to meet in manhattan for lunch or something the day the KSU pullets are ready, I think I'm going to probably snag a couple Leghorns for my kids. I was talking to the owners at "my" farm today and they said theirs were great layers but it took them a couple weeks to learn how to walk on solid ground and get used to going outside.

IVY, a friend of mine suggested using the big eyebolts & opening up the eye part to put it on the livestock panel. That sounds like it might work if the bolt isn't too big. I can also see big staples working, so there are 2 options I will look at tomorrow. I did manage to get a piece of the panel cut by myself with some huge bolt cutters by standing on the handle to cut it. Well whatever works, huh. I actually had the piece cut & had it sitting up in front of the door when I had to run my last two hens into the run, yes the Lakenvelders both got left out when I had to run into town because I had to meet someone & couldn't wait for them to play their run around the coop game tonight. So when I came back & was working on the panel I put it up there to look at it & thought well I'll just see what the hens do if they'll go through there or not & they did with no problems. I know they're a little smaller than some of the chickens & the roosters, so we'll see if this plan will work or not. If not, I may have to use the cutters again to cut one square out on the bottom, but I want to make sure the dogs can't squeeze through it. We'll just see what happens with it. If I can get it put up there & the chickens can go through it should work out fine I just have to get it all worked out.

I wish somebody from Wichita was going to get some of the pullets & I would have you get me a couple & I would come get them. But I understand about the gas.

Today wasn't the best day with the fight with the pups & then the rabbits fighting. I still have my friend's rabbits here & I had to put all of my young ones in together & when I went out this afternoon there had been a fight & one of my young does had a bad gash right by her eye. Her eye is about swollen shut right now, poor little thing. I cleaned it up & put some antibiotic ointment on it. Then I had to make a divider for the cage to separate the one pair I had together from the other buck & his two little does. That took me quite awhile with having to cut the hardware cloth & then wire it in there. By the time I got that all done & the rabbits all settled back in it was time to go cook lunch & get DH off to work. I had to just wing it with dishes for now until my order gets here tomorrow. I had ordered some more metal feeders for the cages. I still need to get a few more things, but I also found out my friend may have the cage kit I need for my cage I got, I'm crossing my fingers that it's the right size, that would be great.

Danz, those are some real cuties, they sure are getting fat. I can't wait to see them with their eyes open. I went this evening & bought two big knuckle bones for the pups to chew on, maybe that will keep them busy for awhile anyway. I went to Dillons & asked them if they had any dog bones & they said no they don't sell them, so I had to buy something in the pet area & they were kind of expensive. I will have to check the other two stores to see if they have anything like what I was looking for. If not, when I go to Wichita again I will check up there. They used to have packages of dog bones in the grocery stores.

I cooked one of my chickens I'd butchered and needed to get out of the freezer any way. I put the broth and the chicken in with the dogs food in their bowls tonight. The dogs should have nice happy tummies tonight. My vet suggests I give Marshmallow additional fat and protein when she is feeding the pups so that should help. Of course Fluff is doing most of the predator work right now so he needs some extra good food too.
I need to go to Topeka or someplace soon and buy another big bag of food.

Danz, wow your dogs are eating well! That should feed those little butter balls! They're so darned cute, I wish I could have another one, but DH would kill me.

I wouldn't mind having a couple either but I am not driving up there for just a couple or three birds. Maybe you could try a training collar for Lily. I don't usually condone the use of them but I think it would work to give her a small buzz every time she tries to go in the run. It would probably only take a couple days of watching and buzzing before she got the message and stayed away from that fence thinking that the fence was biting her when she got too close.

Honestly, I've never had a shock collar work on these dogs, they learn really fast it's the collar and just wait until It's off. I have one and use it occasionally for training on other dogs is I need it. Just have never had success with a pyr with it.

So I had to deal with that right then, so I was out there making a divider for the pen when I hear the two pups fighting over something, you guessed it IN THE COOP. So I take off out of the garage & into the coop & both of them, not just Lily, but both of them are in there & are fighting over the chicken feed.

Trish, this is pretty typical, as they (as LGDs) will eat what thier charges eat. Mine do eat the goat grain and even the hay.

They have even been known to roll on the hay the goats are eating also. This is basically them trying to make the critters they are guarding and themselves smell more alike. This is a way to make predators confused and protect thier charges, I know it can be irritating, but the eating of the grain is something they will do. :)

Danz. The babies are stunning! How old are they now? You can start offering them gruel at about 2 1/2 weeks, they will initially make a mess, but I've done that to help momma.
Also, thought I'd share some of my birds. This is one of my Austrolorp hens, taking care of, turkeys! She claimed them as hers.

Da babies grown...
