Oh, this isn't at all what I was thinking you all were talking about. So it's not the Ivermectin paste I feed my horses. Hmmm... Okay, well, this looks like a liquid. Do you drop it down their beak.. or do you drop it onto their skin???? I think I'll buy some of this! But I'll look at Atwoods and see if they have it. I'd rather just have a lot of it on hand instead of a tiny bottle. You know me... I'm the pharmacy over here. I like to be prepared! LOL

I haven't used the ivermectin pour on before. I always have used sevin or diatomaceous earth. I like doing a little PM on my animals though. How much do you put on a chicken and where do you place it. I've had such a bout with colds this winter if they had mites I wouldn't know it. No signs of them elsewhere but I suppose they could have them in their ears. That would creep me out if I saw bugs jumping off my chickens. Does it kill them anyway, even if they do jump?
I wormed my turkeys yesterday. I sure hope I didn't harm them. It seems they are more susceptible to things like that than chickens. I had bought the wormer probably a year ago but couldn't use it because it isn't safe for ducks and my ducks and chickens drink from the same waterers. I had been giving them some diatomaceous earth now and then but I wanted to make sure they were free of worms.
I was going to go to Topeka today to get some things but DH is going to Emporia so I'll let him pick some stuff up for me. I maybe can get the ivermectin and a dog food Candace recommended after I get released from the hospital Thursday.
I've got to get in gear today and get a new area set up in the brooder for some of these chicks. I'll leave the new ones and the baby turkey in the house for a week or so.
I am going to have to make some room in there before I start my serious spring hatching. I really should start counting and see how many chicks I actually do hatch. I'm sure there's been at least 100 so far this year if not more. Other than my normal loss of Serama babies I can still count what has been hatched.
I want to get the white Seramas set up and separated today if I can as well.
Sounds like I have another busy day ahead. Sure wish you were here Hawkeye to clean my house. You'd probably run and scream!

Hawkeye I forgot. Yes you can incubate those eggs if they haven't been in the fridge over a week. They might not do quite as well since they haven't been turned but you can certainly try. What have you got to loose?

Thank you! I have been reading your posts and really enjoy all the information and support. I have Sebastopols, Chickens, two call ducks, a pair of Seramas, and one jumbo Pekin.

You have Sabastopols? If I were ever going to get a goose that would be what I'd want. They're gorgeous. What kind of chickens do you have other than the Seramas?

Rittert-Just go to Walmart and get some flea and tick treatment for cats or dogs, whatever is cheapest. It won't take much. Frontline, Hartz, any of that stuff.

I've never had to deal with ear mites in poultry, but I know an old remedy that works for dogs, rabbits, cats or other animals with larger ears is to just use some kind of oil, like olive oil or vitamin E oil and put that directly in their ears (warm it up a little first). I've never tried to put oil in a chickens ears, though! The flea and tick treatment should work, but just remember you will have an egg withdrawal time with it. One or two drops of that stuff should be enough.

Then I would be sure that all of the birds are treated, but remember the egg withdrawal time. Seven dust, diatomaceous earth are two housing treatments that are used frequently.

Just for future reference.... don't buy birds that are infected/infested and bring the problems home. You spend more trying to treat and take care of the problems than the birds are worth.

Hawkeye-I guess you figured out the paste is not the same as the pour-on stuff.

Come by frequently and feel free to join in!

So is it the pour on or injectable that I need? It may just come down to whatever happens, happens this time and next time I'll know better than to be overtrusting on adult birds and buy hatchery chicks or eggs. I'll try to make some calls to see if I can talk someone out of a couple ccs of pour-on today but if I can't find any and terramyicin won't help I think I'm just going to have to cross my fingers.

I have never had to deal with ear mites in poultry, but with animals with larger ears you can use oil. Vit E oil, olive oil, etc. You put that in their ears and it suffocates the mites, like oil does on a tick. I've never tried to get oil in a chickens ear! It might be kind of tough to get the dead ear mites out.

Anyway, for future reference don't buy infected/infested birds. You spend more trying to fix the problems than they are worth.

Then be sure your area where you are keeping them is clean and treated. Seven dust, diatomaceous earth are two popular ways.
