Consolidated Kansas

Trish, I'm not surprised about the dogs. A determined dog is an amazing thing. Our full grown Weimaraner could squeeze out of her wire kennel by pushing against the smallest gap. She also eventually broke most of the welds, and I'm talking about pretty heavy duty wire. Fortunately she doesn't need to be crated any more. Good luck with those pups! We have a layer of small chicken wire covered by a layer of heavier wire fence, all attached to landscape timbers on the inside of the yard and lined with rock on the outside, all because the dog keeps pointing out the weaknesses in the system to us.

Patricia, I love those coops. We converted a child's play house into our coop and fenced the chicken yard around it. It's nice, but not in any way moveable!

Someone was asking about cats and dogs preying on chickens. Our dogs are both hunting breeds and I'm sure they'd very much love to eat the chickens. Actually, the Weim did get one of the very first chickens we had before we got the permanent pen and coop put up. Both dogs spend a bit of time every day patrolling the edge of the fence to see if anything edible has been kicked out and to see if they can find a way in, but they don't try too hard any more. Several times I've seen some neighborhood cats standing outside the fence checking things out. Usually the chickens start making a lot of noise if they feel threatened, or a dog lets me know there's something going on. I just let the dog out to chase the cats away. As far as I know, no cat has ever actually gotten in the pen.

Well... I loved those cute little plastic coops until I saw the price!! YIKES! Over $400. Ah well, I just drew up plans to make a cute little hutch style coop for the silkies. Nothing elaborate, just enough to keep them safe at night. Thinking when we move, I'll build them something much nicer and more permanent. But since I now have a lot of material already, I'm hoping my new cute little coop will cost me about $80 max. :) I have left over shingles, too! Thinking of a 4X4-- or maybe 4X3 coop with a single pitch/slant roof. NO trusses!!! ha! Since I only need it to hold my 3 silkies... and possibly a few more if they hatch out. Looking forward to my new project. I would get started now, but my kids have made me sick. *cough, cough*

Well crap! I just typed a bunch and erased it. It wouldn't come back either. What was that? Control ?? I tried a bunch of letters I thought might be it but it didn't help.
I love those little houses. They are adorable . I could see those being perfect for a trio of breeders. They are attractive too which really makes them appealing. I could see having a string of several of them in a row but that would certainly get expensive. I guess if I could afford that I would just go ahead and build a nice big building with runs for everyone. I keep thinking about that and maybe some day I'll figure out how to afford it. I think I'd have to sell a bunch of baby chicks!
Trish, dogs have a certain measurement of their shoulders that determines how large a space they need to get through. As the pups grow they'll get to large to get in. I can safely say this because my duck pen is made of cattle panels and my dogs can't get through them. It'll just take a little more growing.
Renee did you get your computer fixed yet or are you still having to use your phone?

I really don't know exactly how much he paid. I know one he got half price due to it being the display last year. I will have to ask him. Brinsea also just came out with a new one. I still have a Brinsea Distributorship so I am going to look up the cost of that one as well.

Hey Hawkeye, I will try to post a coop my husband built for my bigger chickens. It is a small coop and is built to hold a 30x36 rabbit tray from Tractor Supply. I fill the tray with wood chips and the run with straw. You just slide the tray out and dump in the compost bin. I too converted a playhouse but I just had too many projects so now it holds straw and chips. My husband is a very patient man...

oh yes, please do post a picture of the coop he built!! I'm only in the planning stage of my next coop.. but I can imagine if I feel good enough and the weather holds up, I'll be out there here soon getting started on it.

I didn't even know Brinsea makes chicken coops!!? WOW, I'll check into that. This new coop, I want to be able to move it with me. So I'm going to try to keep it on the small side and try not to make it too heavy.

I tried to find a Brinsea chicken coop-- and could not find one. Where did you see that? I have one of their incubators, so I'm going to guess that they are expensive.

Didn't see them on the US Site links, though

That is also really cute! But it's $500, and that isn't including shipping. Brinsea always charges an arm and a leg for shipping. Yep, going to build a mini coop myself. ha! :) I was just out in the barn checking my materials and I think I have most everything I need there. Except hardware.

Wow, $500? That is outrageous! I looked a the email they sent and it stated to go to www.brinsea.com/cliftoncoops to see them. I haven't bothered because I really hadn't planned on purchasing anything this year. I thought they would be cheap the way they talked, it would be an inexpensive alternative. For $500 it looks kind of flimsy. I still like the one my husband built because I can just pick the tray up and empty it. The only thing is that it isn't temporary and if you wanted to move it, it would take about four lifters. (I am not saying men as I don't want to appear sexist and it would have to be some hefty females) and a trailer.
