Consolidated Kansas

Okay=-- I only have a minute, and I'll check back in later! But I wanted to let Rosie know that her eggs got here and they were ALL perfect!!! GREAT job on packing! It took me quite a while to get them unpacked and I had to use the scissors to get each egg open. Excitement! I just stuck them in the incubator already since I just wanted them to get on with it. Tonight, I'm going to check and see if their air sacs are okay. Been too busy and the room isn't dark enough yet.

Ivy-- so sorry about your doe. :(

Danz, I hope your mom will be feeling better with the IV's and constant care. I have prayed for her, but will continue to pray.

I'll have to go back to see who made the joke now-- since I read it this morning-- but the oven/incubator joke had me really laughing! I'll check later on this evening.

How exciting Hawkeye!!! - Remind me what type of eggs she sent you...

My cousin posted this funny pic on facebook. I love that it says product of Kansas. Anyone seen this before?

Yeah, I use Chicken Poop all the time. I buy it at Atwoods-- they sell it on their counter, but you can find it a lot of places. It's actually MADE here in Wichita. The gal that 'created' it lives here-- the funny thing is that this stuff is going national.

The eggs are Black Rosecombs. It's the Avatar in Checoukan's Profile. (the chickens are pictured) :) I'm looking forward to candling to see how the air sacs are. I'm betting they are all fine, the box didn't have one dent in it. It wasn't even delivered to my house-- my PO called me this morning to come down and pick up the box since it was labeled 'fragile-- hatching eggs'. They see a lot of chicks and eggs come thru their PO. They were real interested in knowing what kind of eggs I got. My post master knows us all by name-- we're in a pretty small "town". It's a country PO in the middle of no where.

tweety, I have seen that product on some store counters, usually at the checkout, it's pretty funny.

IVY, that is a super cute chick, I wonder why it looks so different from your other ones? I'd be interested in what you find out from the other Ameraucana breeders. Are you on the ABC Forum?

Hawkeye, I'm glad your eggs all arrived in great shape, you'll have to update us on how they do & how many you got & all.

Well I finally caught my little hen, she came down low enough for me to grab her. She is back in her cage now, but since her escapade flying around the garage she is now wheezing. I don't know if she's just stressed or she's coming down with something, I rubbed some VetRX on her nose & put some in her water, so hopefully that will help her.

Danz, how is your mom doing, I hope they can get her electrolytes & fluid all balanced again. BTW, that gal with the little Mini Rex buck is talking about driving him down to meet me in Wichita. She hasn't been well, but is going to let me know when she might be able to come, so I may get him after all. I'm really excited because I think he's a really pretty buck. Now I have to find a doe to go with these guys. My little blue boy is doing well.

Tractor supply carries this product.

Glad to get you laughing.I could not resist making fun of the situation.

Trish-I would bet she is a hatchery stock golden campine.

Danz-Hope your mom gets through this okay. I know it gets tougher as you get older.

Hawkey-So it will be like Christmas in the morning when you open that box of eggs, huh? If she didn't pack them right let me know. I will "Bop" her for ya!

Actually, if I know Checoukan, I'll bet she threw in a few "surprises!"

Bama-I can't wait to see your pup! I know I probably saw it Monday, but didn't know which one. We had a great time watching them. I saw one pup that I fell in love with (besides ours!) If it hadn't been spoken for I think we would have come home with it, too. I hope you get that one.

Checoukan-You know, sis, I really wish I could be there to help you get ready for the show this weekend. Be sure to let me know how things go. I'm sure you will do fine.

Whoever (I can't remember) was asking about one LGD vs. two. Here is something that happened last night. We had a big pack of coyotes come running on to the place. As soon as Buddy heard them coming, he sounded the alarm bark and took off around to the north. Runt heard the alarm and took off around them to the south. Buddy intercepted them on the north, turned them back around to the south where they ran smack into Runt. They had no choice but to take off running off to the west with two big white dogs in hot persuit. I love these dogs!

Well, it's been kind of a bummer of a day. Mike has not felt well all day. He tried going to work, but ended up leaving early. Chest pain and BP going up. Then he came home and one of our very best goats that was due to kid soon was found dead. She was one of my favorites. We are just totally blummed. I have no idea what the problem was. I am wondering, though, if perhaps she broke her water early before she was ready to kid and then got an infection and died. I wanted a doeling out of her so bad. We had a BEAUTIFUL doe out of her last year that we were going to keep, and it was killed by one of the other does when it rammed her in the side and broke her ribs. Gee whiz. It's always something.

Ivy,hate to hear that about your Doe.I know how much both of you cared for them.Wish you could have got a doeling out of her. If I can be of any help, please let me know and make sure Mike takes it easy.Don't want him to try to do much!

Hawkeye,
The eggs marked NT, are from the avator picture. The eggs marked 1, are from some of my last years babies. They are from my old quad set of breeders. They are getting old, but I just take care of them. I hope to get more eggs from them this summer. If I don't I'm not going to worry about it. The rosecombs that Ivy have are from the same birds.
Well, I have one more bird to get ready for Pryor show Sat. I will be glad when I am done. Sometimes it stresses them out to be separated from each other, and since them have been in breeder pens, really not in the best of feather, but I think they will do just fine.

Oh, one finally thing. My new Trio, the big breeder in New York want some of the chicks from them.

Danz, I hope your mom is doing better today when you get there.

Daren, sorry to hear about your web site, but you are welcome here.

IVY, yes that would be a good time for writing while you can't get around too well. I think we need reference articles for the new people especially on subjects they always ask about concerning chicken care & such, maybe from chick stage on up. Then some on incubating & all to do with that. I could think of quite a few things that are needed. It sounds like we have plenty of people to help on the computer part. I'm sorry to hear about your doe, that's the pits.

Well I went out & was taking care of the rabbits when I decided to check in on my little hen in the cage. I opened the door & was putting some new shavings in there for her when she flew out the door. She is very good at flying I found out, so she just flew on top of the tallest rabbit stack & from there to the rafters in the garage. I haven't been able to get her down so she's still up there. Hopefully she will come down eventually to eat & drink so I can catch her. I warned my DH when he went out to the garage to get in his car that she was up there so he wouldn't freak out if he heard something above his head.

So I'm not really up on incubating eggs & all since it's been so long for me, back in the 80s probably, Is there any way to check to see if the eggs are fertile before you put them in the incubator or do you have to put them in & then check them at some point? That may sound like a silly question, but I'm trying to collect some eggs for a lady who wants to try hatching some chicks with her kids so they can see the whole process.

I just put them all in and candle around days 6-10, depending on the color of the shell- takes longer to be sure on the darker ones...I can't bear to crack them open if patience will allow me to keep just one more!!

Chooks, I'd be glad to test your birds. And I can get you some buttons eggs as well. I sold all but my original breeders so I'm not overrun with them, but wil have some. If you talk to Sandy I am having trouble getting in touch with her. I need to know when she is coming for her pup. I was hoping to get them moved out of here this week if possible. (I can't really afford to pay for a second round of shots at the price I charge per pup.) I also have a couple people asking for pups if anyone backs out so I want to get them moved for sure or sell them else where.
I need to go to Ottawa one of these days. Maybe if I knew when you would be around I could catch your birds at that time. Of course it's a drive up there from here but at least you have a little experience and can help with your own birds.
I've been thinking about holding a public testing if I can get my friend who is a licensed tester to do it with me.

Fabulous! I'll tell Sandy to give you a buzz...has she got your number? I know they're very excited.

If you just let me know when you'll be heading in this direction, I'll be sure to be available. I'm happy to help test, and I'll pay you for your trouble and gas! Do you submit the paperwork for the NPIP as the tester, or...? I had the State vet out before, and Dr. Grosdidier did everything, so I'm not sure. Let me know if there's stuff I need to get or fill out, etc., if you know.

I keep thinking about getting certified to test- I know a lot of folks around here would appreciate that, with all the 4H. As far as I know there's just one guy who does it. I'd be able to help you do public testings, too. Just need to make the time to get certified!

I would be willing to write a few articles for the wickiechickie (sp?) thing. I'm sure chooks has some articles she could contribulte. I will be laid up for a while this spring, so it might be a good time to do some writing. I'm not that expererienced with computer "stuff" but would be able to write and submit it to someone more computer savvy than me.

Do we want all original articles? Would it be something that we would reference other articles? Would this be in direct "comptetition" with BYC? I think that is part of what they are trying to do here such as with the new article writing contest they have here.

Later folks.

I've got a ton of articles, and I probably answer 10 or more PMs a week regarding all sorts of stuff...and emails...and more! If I just compiled all of that I could fill out a lot of info. I'm really not the person to build the site, though...my days of doing that were a decade or more ago, and I've always been a hardware geek, not a programmer. I'm actually desperate to find someone to help me build this site for this NGO, to tell the truth, so I'm happy to help flesh it out, but one of you guys may be better for the building and hosting stuff.

I'm not sure about the competition thing...this site is many things to many people, but I've never used it for reference much short of looking up threads on things. I've never really looked at articles here, other than writing my own. A wiki is bound to happen, and I think that's really a different sort of reference than what's going on here in this community, so I'm not concerned. I could be wrong, though.
