Chooks, I'd be glad to test your birds. And I can get you some buttons eggs as well. I sold all but my original breeders so I'm not overrun with them, but wil have some. If you talk to Sandy I am having trouble getting in touch with her. I need to know when she is coming for her pup. I was hoping to get them moved out of here this week if possible. (I can't really afford to pay for a second round of shots at the price I charge per pup.) I also have a couple people asking for pups if anyone backs out so I want to get them moved for sure or sell them else where.
I need to go to Ottawa one of these days. Maybe if I knew when you would be around I could catch your birds at that time. Of course it's a drive up there from here but at least you have a little experience and can help with your own birds.
I've been thinking about holding a public testing if I can get my friend who is a licensed tester to do it with me.

Ivy - so sorry about your doe and lost doeling. I'm sure that must have come as quite a blow to you to find her like that and its hard not having any answers either. I also enjoyed your coyote/Buddy/Runt story.

I would be willing to write a few articles for the wickiechickie (sp?) thing. I'm sure chooks has some articles she could contribulte. I will be laid up for a while this spring, so it might be a good time to do some writing. I'm not that expererienced with computer "stuff" but would be able to write and submit it to someone more computer savvy than me.

Do we want all original articles? Would it be something that we would reference other articles? Would this be in direct "comptetition" with BYC? I think that is part of what they are trying to do here such as with the new article writing contest they have here.

IVY, yes that would be a good time for writing while you can't get around too well. I think we need reference articles for the new people especially on subjects they always ask about concerning chicken care & such, maybe from chick stage on up. Then some on incubating & all to do with that. I could think of quite a few things that are needed. It sounds like we have plenty of people to help on the computer part. I'm sorry to hear about your doe, that's the pits.

Well I went out & was taking care of the rabbits when I decided to check in on my little hen in the cage. I opened the door & was putting some new shavings in there for her when she flew out the door. She is very good at flying I found out, so she just flew on top of the tallest rabbit stack & from there to the rafters in the garage. I haven't been able to get her down so she's still up there. Hopefully she will come down eventually to eat & drink so I can catch her. I warned my DH when he went out to the garage to get in his car that she was up there so he wouldn't freak out if he heard something above his head.

So I'm not really up on incubating eggs & all since it's been so long for me, back in the 80s probably, Is there any way to check to see if the eggs are fertile before you put them in the incubator or do you have to put them in & then check them at some point? That may sound like a silly question, but I'm trying to collect some eggs for a lady who wants to try hatching some chicks with her kids so they can see the whole process.

Trish, the only way I know to do it is that if you have a few "extras" you crack them open to see. If several of them are fertile, most likely all or a large percentage of the rest will be fertile.

If anyone else knows another way, please chime in. I know sometiems I would like to know without loosing any of my eggs to the "crack it open" test, especially with some of my bantams that don't lay very often. Since have a larger incubator than what I really need I generally just put them in and see if they start to develop. I can understand where in this situation you would rather have a better idea first.

Since I am an IT geek, I host most of my small sites out of my house. I have several servers running various OSes. I think this type of site would be best setup on some sort of Wiki site software. That way it can be indexed and searched easily.

Here's some picks of my pure black chick. I'm relatively sure it came out of a black ameraucana egg, but all the other black ameraucanas I have hatched have white tummies, and their legs and beaks are not this dark. The pictures may give him a brownish or gray look, but believe me he is black all over. The little spot on his head is where some of his "fluff" is stuck down. I think I'll post this on the ameraucana breeders thread to see what they think.

Leap year messed me up. I had some eggs to take out of the incubator and put in the hatcher. I just did that. Half of them were already pipped!

My little seramas have redeemed themselves. Two of them are pipped and another looks viable. I turned them all loose to see if they would be happier and maybe start doing their thing, but these eggs had to have been fertilized before I turned them loose. You just never know about these birds!
