Consolidated Kansas

Karen, can you let me know the name of it after you've picked it up? I'd be interested in giving it a try too. I've seen Mitchell Vet on the way past so know exactly where it is....

It's Chlorhexedrine Solution by Durvet. It was $8.95 for 16 oz. Mix 2 Tbsp. per 1 gallon then lightly mist over the hatching eggs. The label says it is a topical cleanser for animal wounds (horses, dogs). The ingredient chlorhexedine gluconate is also used as a mouth rinse for periodontal disease. Sooooo, I'll let you know how it goes.

Danz: I'm praying for you and your parents.

Tazcat and I get our Aloha eggs tomorrow and I'm really excited about incubating my first batch of eggs!

Danz.. Keeping your parents in my heart!

okay guys.. I really need to keep the hubby away from the farm stores. We went into Orschlens to get hardware cloth. 200 feet of it to line the bottom of our fence to keep the bunnies out and also for the run. This is what we came home with: (He apparently has a thing for ducks...)

Meet Goose - a Rouen Duck

And this is Daffy: Edited: After closer investigation, I think he/she is a Cayuga, not a runner.

We got a small (tiny) kennel to keep the two new ones quarantined for a week or so to make sure they are healthy. The are also half the size of Quacker and Ducky, so I didn't want those two to squish these two. Of course had to splurge for another heat lamp and bulb. This adventure is getting more and more expensive.. LOL. This is it. I never thought I'D be the one to put my foot down! LOL

Danz, your poor parents. I'm so sorry your mom has taken a turn for the worse.

Hawkeye, that coop is looking great!

Tweety, your husband is hilarious about the ducks!

Marc, Hawkeye is correct, the answer is NOW. Mine are a few shoulder feathers behind yours and I already had to put a top on the brooder because we had an escapee yesterday. Two summers ago when our Australorps were just about 4-5 months old, they managed to fly over the 6' fence around the chicken yard so we clipped their wing feathers. The BOs and Wyandotte have never shown any ability to fly that high so we've left their wings alone.

My chicks are nuts. Two love to climb on my hand and be held. A third tolerates it. The fourth is still doing the "screams like a little girl thing." Once in a while, one will run across the brooder at full speed and just pounce on another one. That always starts a bunch of action.

Danz, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, hugs to you & prayers.

tweety, how cute your hubby brought home more ducks. Mine would never do anything like that.

KarenS & Taz, how exciting that your Aloha eggs are coming tomorrow! Keep us all up to date on how it all goes. I wish I was joining you in the project this year, but I just can't, maybe next year.

Well so far I only have gotten two eggs from my Ameraucana hens, waiting for more so I can put them in the incubator. How long can I hold these before I have to put them in? IVY, you said something about Oxine, would that work to spray on the eggs before putting them in? I have some of that. My little hen in the crate laid my another cute little pink egg today. She took all the straw I put in the crate & make a little nest with it. I don't want to let her out when I'm not going to be here this weekend to watch her, so I guess I'll wait until we're back on Monday to give her freedom. I can't wait to get these rabbits this weekend. I'll have to take pics of them after we get back, especially of the little babies.

Ivy-was it you that was saying your friend lived for 3 more years after being diagnosed? I really need to hear stories like that. Thank you!

Danz- I am so sorry to hear about your parents. I will be sending them prayers and thoughts!

Thank you again everyone! I am sure they are both benefiting from the extra prayers and thoughts.

My dad was going to be discharged today, but his oxygen level was too low, so they are keeping him still. But his vomiting and vertigo seem to be under control.

I spoke to my MIL this morning and she is very upbeat and positive!

Tweety-I guess your hubby DOES like ducks! How cute!

HEChicken-Hats off to you for building your own incubator. How cool that you built that one out of stuff you had laying around. That's just awesome. I did have to laugh at the 5 thermometers, though. I thought I was a little neurotic when I had 3 thermometers triple checking my incubator.

Checoukan-No, I'm not so puny today. I actually had a pretty good day. Yesterday was the sh**s, if you know what I mean....literally! Anyway, I'm sure you will be glad to get some of those eggs hatched. I think it will be really cool to see what all you get. I candled my bantam partridge wyandottes today and I have at least a dozen of them showing development and it is still very early. I'm excited for those. Speaking of your old englilsh... Just how nice are your brown reds??? Maybe I should think about some of those. Gee... like I need another variety, huh? Oh, I checked the KSU webpage and their pullets are all spoken for this year. Glad we got out foot in the door on those. I'm hoping Big Sis will still be here when we go to pick them up. Son #1 may be demonstrating the neuclear reactor that day and son #2 may be demonstrating a generator he built, plus it will be his birthday. I'm planning to at least take them out to dinner that day.

I thought I would post some pictures of how I fix a "club footed" chick. This chick was stuck in the shell and was in the incubator longer than he should have been. I did help him out or he would not have made it himself. When he came out of the shell I noticed his feet were badly curled. I decided to give him some time because I wasn't sure he would make it at all. When I had him in the brooder I noticed his feet had straightened out a little, but were still far from normal.

Here's what the chick looked like when I decided to help him with some orthopedic prosthetics.... bandaids.

Left Foot

Right foot

The prostetic device.

Therapy in place.

Strange how i find myself mesmerized watching them do everything and nothing. Like when I was 5 staring at my older brothers guppy aquarium. I think they're hypnotizing me .

I will leave these bandaids on for a few days and then see how he does. I noticed his legs were very stiff, but I think that by getting his toes and feet straightened out he will start using them correctly which will help the rest of his legs. He looks to be paddling around the brooder very well after his treatment, although it does make him look somewhat "ducky."
