Consolidated Kansas

Kind of blurry picture. Pulled these kids out of the hatcher this morning. (Cayugas). There are 7 of them.

I am really hoping everyone is a bit late this morning. I need some time to relax. I've been busy cleaning and feeding the birds in here. My dumb ducks had gone across the road and started several nests in the high weeds. Something had eaten most of the eggs. I gathered what was left but they may have gotten frozen. I've GOT to get those birds in a pen for a while so I have a little control over their laying. They've always been free range but I am tired of chasing them back across the road.
Hawkeye I hope I get a lot of use of this tiller too. It was over $1500 on sale so I am going to have to do some major gardening to pay for it. I've wanted one for a couple years but gave up trying to find a used one at a good price. I can't wait to have time to get it on the tractor and try it out. It's supposed to rain again though so it will be a few days. I think if I can space rows right I might be able to run a smaller hand tiller between them to weed with. I hope. I am not into pulling weeds if I don't have to.

Tweety- those are adorable ducks! I love the black one! That's 4 ducks-- you're going to need a kiddie swimming pool now! LOL

Thanks! The black one (Daffy) was my DH's choice and what started us off on getting the two new ones. He loves black animals :) And yes, we were talking about a kiddie pool last night. Trying to determine the logistics of either building a ramp on both sides or sinking it into the ground and putting just a ramp on the inside. I think I'm going to let the duckies go for a swim today (all four - not together) in the bathtub. i'll try to get video!

Hello all! I thought I would check in with my fellow Kansans, I am in the Hutchinson area and very very new to the world of chickens.

Cute Cute Cute!! That's exactly what Daffy looks like, so now i'm positive she/he is a Cayuga! Yay!

tweety, I wouldn't sink the pool in the ground, you will need to dump it out at intervals because they poop in the water & it gets really nasty. I had ducks & geese at one time so I know how messy they are. I liked them, the geese were the best weeders I ever had. I never had a dandelion in my yard as long as I had those geese.

Danz, those are some cute duckies! I kind of wish I could have some again, but they would get into my water garden & make a mess of it unless I penned them up, so I'll have to wait on that. The pups are already getting in there to cool off, can you imagine how it's going to be this summer, they will be laying in there. Oh well, my flower gardens are a total mess from the free-range chickens & the pups & now my pond is going to be a disaster too. So much for having my yard look nice.

Yeah, I said I was leaving, I need to get off here & get around or my DH is going to get upset with me. Yesterday he was aggravated at me & said I needed to spend less time on the computer with my chicken *#@*! I just repeated it back to him so he could hear how he sounded, then he didn't say much more. OK, I'm leaving now, see you all Monday.

Beautiful babies!! What are you thinking of planting? My neighbor has been busy putting in vines-- I think they are elderberry. I know he's wanting to make wines. He's my crazy neighbor that has the half sunken cement house and is nearly off-grid. He's got a lot of neat ideas, and I bet he puts in a huge garden again this year. But I don't know what he grows in it-- it's towards the back, I can barely see it.

Trish -- have a great trip!! :)

Tweety- you don't need to do anything with the pool-- you don't even need a ramp. Worst case, you could put a couple of bricks in front of it. But our ducks got in and out of the pool with no troubles, and they weren't all that big of a duck. They didn't need a ramp, so if you find that they do when they are small-- just use the brick. You'll be dumping out your kiddie pool every two or 3 days anyway. They make a MESS in the pool. It will be full of poop and gunk in a day flat. You'll be doing good to hold out for 3 days before you dump it. My dad made me dump ours every 2 or 3-- so that's what I'm going off of. We had more ducks, though.... and geese. They were so happy and a lot of fun, but because of them, I'll never have another duck or goose again! LOL!! But you'll enjoy them.

I met Renee yesterday!!!!!

She brought me 2 lovely silkies and some eggs, and I gave her the little love of a pea chick. We stood around talking for an hour and a half! She also gave me some goodie samples!

She is a sweetheart and if you ever get a chance to meet her in person, take it!

Thanks Renee for making my day brighter!

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! I will try to post pics later today of the Rocks. I guess they aren't super commonly kept, I have not been able to dig much up online about them. They are beginning to get their feathers in and look cutely awkward. We can not really tell them all apart except for a couple with extra loving personalities so my husband has taken to calling them all Raggedy Anne.

The coop is in progress right now, perhaps we will have it done by the end of the weekend.
I am currently a stay-at-home mom so maybe I have too much time to spend oohing and awing over them, I don't think I have watched TV since we got them, they're more way more entertaining...

I will leave these bandaids on for a few days and then see how he does. I noticed his legs were very stiff, but I think that by getting his toes and feet straightened out he will start using them correctly which will help the rest of his legs. He looks to be paddling around the brooder very well after his treatment, although it does make him look somewhat "ducky."

Thank you so much for posting that tutorial! I will definitely keep this in the back of my mind for if/when I need to know how to do this.

Mandilynn - glad you found us!

Well I'm off for the weekend, I won't be around, but will try to keep up some on my phone. I'll let you all know Monday how the little rabbits & babies made the trip. Have a great weekend everyone!

Have a great trip!

So glad you got to meet her too - isn't she a sweetheart though? I forgot to mention in my post that she also brought me two silkies. I've seen tons of photos but they are the first I've seen in person and I am SO glad to have them. My pair are practically identical to yours and are doing great this morning!

What kind of eggs did you get? And aren't you getting the Aloha eggs today too? You are going to have an incubator full for sure. We're a little early for the Easter hatch-a-long so I guess Karen, you and I will have to have our own little hatch-a-long for the eggs we set this week. I did consider joining the Easter hatch-a-long and I do still have the other incubator. Hmmmm....its to think about. DH kind of rolled his eyes when I showed him Renee's eggs in the 'bator, saying "That's a LOT of eggs", so I'm not sure what he'd say if I set up another LOL.

I don't think I have watched TV since we got them, they're more way more entertaining...

That is so true. My first brooder was set up next to the TV in the living room and I found it so much more rewarding and entertaining to sit and watch the chicks than to flip the TV on. We've since given up TV and all we have for viewing now is Netflix. I'd still rather chick-watch than movie-watch. Our cat agrees. Here he is sitting watching "chick TV". He would sit like this for hours at a time without moving.
