Consolidated Kansas

Yeah I've thought that about myself many times. I have this innate love for animals. And I've always taken home and nursed every sick creature I could find (that included a couple of ex husbands!

I used to help my OKC vet with surgeries on the weekends. I loved it.

Thanks Loralee.
I so appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. It is a very hard time for me. I am afraid I will loose my Mom at any time. She told me she was tough and stubborn and was going to get better. I sure hope she is right.

I just got back home. I am having a pretty rough time right now. My Mom has pneumonia. She is just not doing good at all. I just sat and bawled when she finally fell asleep.
I got the last puppy to it's forever home this morning and got all the pheasants PT tested. Now I only have a few hundred more birds to get done! I have appointments to test three more flocks in the next couple of months. At least if I'm doing someone else they can do the catching and stuff. That is hard for me to do . Darn my lousy back any way!
The chicken with the broken leg is doing quite well. She can stand for a moment and hobble a tiny bit before she sits down. I noticed that the foot on the leg that was hurting her is turned toward the inside so when she tried to walk she steps on her own foot. I didn't feel a broken bone in either the top or the bottom of her leg but her joint was hurting when I touched it. I am thinking she injured it right at her knee or whatever you would call that area on a chicken. Sure wish I had an x-ray so I could see what needs to be moved where. She's a very nice hen and I know once she is able to go back outside the roosters will beat her down to nothing. I'm not sure how to protect her. I guess I'll see if she is still able to lay later on when she gets better.
DH said well people at work who have injured chickens just eat them. I just can't myself doing that. Eating a bird just because she got hurt.
Awww, I'm so sorry, Danz. My heart aches for you. I will continue to pray for healing for your mom and strength and comfort for you and your dad.

She just may do it, if she is saying that!

Yep, I've done the same thing! I've rescued wild baby bunnies from my first dog-- she killed everyone but two. I called them Bunny A and Bunny B. They didn't have their eyes open, so I'm thinking they were just a few days old when I got them. Put them in a shoe box on top of a heating pad, and got goat milk from Atwoods and fed them around the clock tiny little drops so they wouldn't over fill. Mama bunny only feeds once or twice at night, but I didn't have bunny milk. Anyway, they grew up into great big hoppy bunnies and I let them go. It was sooo amazing to let them go. I have pretty good luck healing animals. I worked for my horse vet on weekends before I got married. Had a lot of fun and partly why I can care so well for my horses now. I handle a lot of blood and gore and not get upset.

I'm not a weak stomach kind of person either. The only time I get weak is if it is my kids or myself. Then I want to faint. I got asked by the game warden if I wanted to become a wild life rehabilatator. My family said it sounded perfect for me. But he told me I would have to take in coons and possums as well as other things. I just can't see nursing a predator back to health. I may at some point consider that though. I really love things like that. I'm sure people think I'm crazy anyway.
That reminds me. I grabbed a jacket when I went to the hospital . When I was walking out I ran into 3 people I know. I reached in my pocket and pulled out a duck egg, I forgot I had picked up earlier when I fed the dogs. They laughed and said, "You really are a bird farmer aren't you!" It was kind of embarrassing. Here I am with a duck egg on my pocket and a little chicken poop on my leg from bending down to pick it up. I guess I is what I is!!!

Don't forget to set your clocks ahead tonight!!!

Hey all! I used to work for a Vet. That's the whole reason that I moved to Kansas, to go to K-State and become a vet. I wound up not caring for Manhattan (it was a huge change compared to St. Louis) so I went to KU instead and this is where I've stayed. I love working with animals and wish I would have stuck with the dream. Back when I worked with the vet, he used to let me spay cats, give shots, just about everything he did - man how times have changed!

Danz, Still thinking about you L To funny about the egg!

HEChicken: Love the cat photo! My dog does the same thing, our cats haven't even paid attention to the birds at all.

We let the ducks have a swim in the tub today. They were SOOO cute! I understand the saying "like ducks in water" now. They weren't scared and immediately started diving under and swimming! I got a few videos if you are interested: Ducky & Quackers:
Daffy & Goose:

Also have a video of our little escape artist! Goose can't get out anymore, but just about every time we left the room last night she got outta her kennel and got into the older duck's kennel. Sigh.. so much for quarantining. Got her on video after I sat next to the cage trying to figure out how she was doing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3DkKAdW78k

I hate daylight savings time. I really wish they would leave time alone! I swear it was thought up by golfers who wanted to have time on the golf course after work. There is no other logic behind it!
When I go to town to see my Mom today I plan to stop and buy the cheapest canned cat food I can find. Chopper won't let the cats have any of their food because he hogs every bit of it if I don't lock him in the kennel. The cats are very spoiled and I see no reason for this silly duck to eat $1 a can food. He is growing faster than my other ducks though so it must be good for him.
Tweety I put Chopper in the tub once a day. Sure glad I have a hand shower as well as a normal one. He leaves duck down all over the place, not to mention a few presents he leaves behind as he plays. They are so adorable when they play in water though. It gets cuter all the time. He lets me splash him now. DH tried it and he acted freaked. I hope in time he will like DH as well. The whole point to let him stay in here was so he could have a duck that followed him around and he could play with.
I'm trying to figure out a name for the pup I kept. She comes running when I yell puppy, but she needs a name of her own. I'm open to suggestions.

I dislike daylight savings, too, except that first week after we fall back when I get to sleep in a bit.

We should start an online petition. Exempt Kansas the way Arizona stepped out of it. It just wastes a bunch of money anyway, because half the year we're forced to be up in the dark when we wouldn't otherwise. Fossil fuels being used for some dumb obsolete practice.

I'm off to slog around and work in the rain. I have some building and repairs that have to be done.

I agree. I hate the fact that it doesn't get dark until 10 PM in summer. We tend to work outside until dark and then you eat and it's time to go to bed. I used to hear they did it for farmers but farmers work as late as they are going to regardless of the time. I think if the clock is allowed to just follow it's natural course it is much easier to adjust our lives than to be loosing an hour and gaining an hour twice a year.
Ivy I had to laugh. I have a couple relatives names on that list you gave. They might feel a bit insulted if I named the dog that.
