Consolidated Kansas

So my morning has been pretty much awful. Well.... I should say my night was. I woke up a little before 1am to my youngest daughter throwing up. In bed and on the floor. SO THANKFUL for hardwood flooring (whew!!!) and got her to the bathroom, she kept throwing up in the toilet and mean while, I cleaned up the floor and got the bedding put into the washer and put on clean bedding on her bed after making sure it was wiped down. I ALWAYS use those zippered plastic covers over our mattresses so they stay brand new, so I just had to wipe a bit of bleach on the plastic cover of her mattress before putting new bedding on. Anyway, then I put her in a bath, because it was gross. Got her out and dried her off and back to bed. Up 20 mins later, but she had made it to the bathroom and was throwing up again. This went on every 20 minutes -- running to the bathroom all night long. UGH. Her bedding stayed clean up until 7am this morning and I'll have to change it again. Sigh. She's laying down right now, but isn't feeling well, so I hope she makes it to the bathroom the next time. I'm guessing a yucky virus hit her. I'm not surprised, she's at the age where I have to force her to hand wash, and then she still puts things into her mouth. (She's 4 yrs) She is also in Preschool where her friends have had the same thing. So it was probably a no win situation. I just hope *I* don't come down with it! I can't afford to! I have my parents coming in on Saturday and I need to clean house like a mad woman this week! :p

I hope she's feeling better. There have been so many cases of stomach flu here in town I'm almost afraid to leave the house!

I was able to skim quickly, since I can now have a little bit of electronics time. ( I had a bad concussion from a fall which initially eliminated all , then work and now a little more me time again :) Well wishes to all of you!!! I have missed checking this board!!
Congrats Josie! Baby girls are so much fun! Mine was such an easy baby. Eased me into the parenting role well.
Love the baby silikies! Our Silkie is still trying to hatch a ping pong ball.... Or any egg she can steal to sit on.
We lost one of my sons Marans chicks to the cold. It got squashed.... The others all seem to be doing well though. I am trying to keep them stocked in BOSS and corn for treats.
We have a mystery egg layer. Has to be our polish or our Favarolle..... But?

That IS huge.

I had such a crazy day yesterday. I am so glad my normal days aren't like that. to make a long story short I had a scammer from an ebay purchase claiming I sent her the wrong item. I literally spent 3 hours going over all my records and trying to figure out what happened. She was nasty and hateful and nothing I could do would make her happy. She wouldn't give the information I requested to verify what might have happened. I finally figured out from one statement she made that it is all a big scam to try to get her product for free. But it still caused me hours of work. As soon as the entire thing is resolved I will block her from being able to purchase from me in the future. Since you can no longer leave negative feedback for buyers I can't even warn other sellers of her tricks. It seems every year when I am selling my Christmas stuff I have one of these major scammers surface and I keep thinking I am going to stop dealing. But I always do it again. It is so hard to get business references with a major company. I just hate to let that go.

My SIL's mother used to do a lot of selling on eBay but now she does very little. She's been scammed a few times and now it's even harder to deal with it. She also said they want you to add the shipping to the selling price instead of charging separate shipping so that eBay gets a percentage of the shipping cost. She finds it to be more of a headache than it's worth and she does most of her selling at flea markets now. I wasn't aware of any major problems that would have caused eBay to become so seller-unfriendly, but I guess they thought it was a good idea.

6 weeks old.. I think it is interesting how the feathers are all messy like this.

Is it going to have a frizzle hair doo?

I love the awkward teenage phase!

Cute ultrasound pic of our little peanut learning to suck her thumb! Sorry for those who are on FB as this will be a duplicate for you!

Isn't it amazing you can see your baby already?!

Cherwill, that is true. What used to happen is sellers would sell something really cheap with high shipping, since they didn't pay seller's fees on the shipping amount. So eBay got wise and started charging seller's fees on the shipping as well. Between that and the actual cost of postage always rising, it is really hard to charge a reasonable amount for shipping and not end up in the hole. I don't sell that much but when I do it often seems like a hassle. I state that I will ship within 1 business day of receiving payment but if I wasn't planning on going into town that day I really have to add in the cost of the trip to town just to get it in the mail. By the time PayPal takes their cut, and eBay takes their cut, and I have to take the time out of my day to package it up, address it, drive to town and mail it, it usually doesn't feel like I netted that much.

HEChicken, the reason I did it like that is because I read on BYC that someone else said it was easier if you were by yourself to do it that way rather than trying to bend the panel & attach it with the frame together & after making one I agree. Even if you have help I think it would still be easier to do it that way because think of trying to hammer staples in to a frame standing up, I think it would be next to impossible for me & so hard on your back too trying to maneuver & get the staples in while inside the frame. If you put both sides on while the panel & the boards are laying down you don't have to kill yourself getting the staples in there.

Josie, that is so sweet, I wish we would have been able to see so much when I had my son. No, the Hovabator 1588 is styrofoam just like the others. I keep my humidity at 40% for incubating, but as I said I don't incubate in my Hovabator, I just hatch in there. When I put eggs in for lockdown for hatching I have my humidity at 55-60% as well.

Here is a chicken Merry Christmas!

And here's another one!
Hechicken I wanted to thank you for posting that information about the calendars. I just ordered one for a person who's name I got in a drawing. I think it was the perfect personal gift for someone I don't really know well.

I would suggest you call the company & kindly ask to speak to the owner/president, make it clear you are a customer. A quick google search shows Pearce, Frank H. is the President of
Brinsea Products Inc. in the U.S.A.
I have employees and if there is a problem I want people to talk to me, I want to fix the problem. You may be getting other people's rejects as replacements,
maybe an employee is being lazy? Go to the top and kindly explain your
experience. Be sure to state right away that you are a CUSTOMER because we get so many calls from people who want to talk to the owner to sell us something usually credit card processors. Let us know how it goes!

Oh - Brinsea has been GREAT with all the problems and they've received the last 2 back and even called me after receiving them back saying I was right about the lids - the 3rd one they sent (the current one I am having problems with) they took out of the box and checked the lid before sending - the lid was not warped! I'm not totally giving up on this incubator - I have finally gotten the temp to stay steady for about 12 hours now - I'm going to see if I can keep it steady for a week... if not, then I will call and have a 4th one sent! Their customer service is fabulous.

So i got my very first soft shelled egg today. Weird thing was when I opened the coop door it rolled out. I dont know why a hen would lay it there that is right under a roost, could she have laid it while on roost? I have my EE hen still insisting on laying on top of other hens while they lay and laying hers behind the chicks dog house in their pen. I dont know if she is trying to go broody or not. She sits on someone elses egg for an hour or so and gets off to eat and drink and that is when I take it. Should I leave it and see what she does or is she just quirky?

Those last little chicks I put pics up of yesterday,, they are slower to feather I am thinking because of the brahma, and I think cochin, I want to get them outside, this week is going to be in the 50's + so move them? Or wait longer? they are 6 weeks

I have a hen who regularly lays a soft shelled egg from the roost. Usually they are broken and stepped on, but when I check really early (before anyone is off the roosts) it is occasionally intact. I haven't been able to resolve it, so I suppose she has some sort of laying problem. Frankly, I'd settle for soft eggs right now. I'm getting one egg (from my 10 hens) on a GOOD day. Most of them are molting and not laying anything.

This one was was split from the fall I imagine. That is strange that you have one constantly laying that way. I am going to watch and see if this was just that fluke or if we have an issue. Man when those hens slow down its like they have a meeting one day and decide together that they are on strike and tell all the underlings to continue production.. I have been getting 1-4 a day but at least something is still coming thru, I dread grocery store eggs

I just found an egg yesterday that I think was laid from the roost. Once in a while I find an egg in a nest hollowed out underneath the nesting boxes, but this was right in the middle of the coop with no nest under it. It was cracked on one side but it was obvious it hadn't been pecked, so I'm guessing it cracked when it was laid.

Sharol, I feel your pain! I went through quite a long period like that early in the summer, where I would go 0-1 egg a day. At that time, I had 6 hens laying and 4 that weren't laying yet. I had 10 laying by the time they molted and somehow managed to still get 2-4 eggs a day during that time. I hope they get done with that molt quickly!
