My buff orpington hen has developed a little bleeding on her comb, and of course the others have noticed. I cleaned it off with a soft cloth and some vetericyn and then put some blu-cote on it (and my hand and the roost and her wing and and and (that stuff is messy)). I finally got it on the comb by spraying a bit on a clean part of the feeding table and using my finger to spread it on the comb. I couldn't see any wound or anything, but the cloth was coming back red, so something had been bleeding.

Is there anything else I should have done? I have clear iodine, too, if anyone thinks that would be appropriate. They are all settled in for the night and she was VERY indignant at the treatment, so any further work will have to be done in the morning. She isn't a particularly friendly bird, but she doesn't fight me once I have her in my hands. That means I'll need to go out before the door opens in the morning to check it. I would have felt better about it if I could have found a wound, but there didn't seem to be anything obvious.

Danz thank you again for all your generosity and for making my kids and myself happy. You made the holidays super special. I told my husband I wanted to look for a sppecial bird. I want a lavender orp, marans, anything blue or lemon/blue. I want something special and something that I do not have. I really love the cochins and cant find blue of course they are more expensive too also splash I like alot. Do you have any suggestions?

Sunflower, do you think R would be interested in EE mixes? I think I may have some extra pullets I could part with no charge. Let me know, and I'll go check and see what I have. I could post some pics, if she's interested. However, if she specifically wants day old chicks, I won't have any for another month. I can't even tell you how old mine are -- a couple months by now, I think.
Thank you Karen... she is actually wanting to hatch the eggs too :) I'm thinking maybe I can find some speckled sussex for her - she thinks those are pretty neat looking (and they'd fit in with my flock!) But thank you so much for the kind offer!

Sharol I would think that would work. The last time I used blue kote I put a pair of rubber gloves on thinking I was being smart. but forgot and put the bird up against me when I opened the gate to put it back out and ended up permanently dying my pink sweatshirt. Oh well. The chickens don't care what it looks like.
Maidenwolf there are blue cochins but what I have seen hasn't been striking. It's more like the bbs look that can be black or bluish or whatever. I keep thinking I will have blue copper marans and blue barred rocks, but I keep loosing birds. It just seems just about the time they get fully feathered some of them die. I've never lost birds like I've lost those. Once I get them out of that stage they are fine. I was just reading this could be due to a thiamine deficiency. I need to do some more research on that. You would think feeding them regular medicated chick starter would be a good thing. Maybe there is more lacking. And I don't know why this is affecting these two breeds and not the others.
I have blue and or porcelain d'uccles but they haven't gotten to laying age yet.
And I have the lavender Orpingtons. Of course all of these need to get older before they start laying.
I mixed up a bucket of feed to ferment with the ACV while ago. I am going to try it in my brooder. Hopefully they will like it and it will save me some feed dollars. If they do well on it I'll work on a larger scale idea for feeding the flock. I wish I had a heated place I could do this out by the pens and so I didn't have to have it in the house. I thought about throwing some yeast in there to get it going good but I'll just wait and see what happens.
I'm tired. I think I am going to go relax a bit until DH gets home from work.

There are so many other breeds and colorations I want to get. I enjoy all the breeds so I am not picky. I wonder why those 2 breeds were affected like this?

Hawkeye, I forgot to answer. Yes I am using oxine in the vaporizers. Thanks to KarenS it has saved more than one bird for sure.

I was surprised that 6 of the lavender orp eggs that had ruptured air cells did develop. Now if they only hatch I'll be very happy. I don't know the blood lines on these particular ones. They were gift eggs. I have some top of the line lavenders now so if these are utility grade I'll probably sell them later on. I think they should be top quality though judging from whom they came from.
I've had great success with loose air sacs on my shipped eggs, so I'm not surprised that yours are developing! I had mine go ahead and hatch. Don't count them out, for sure!

Keep in mind that the only worms that will be visible in the poop are roundworms. All the other types of worms are too tiny to be seen with the naked eye. Tapeworm segments could also be seen, however tapeworms in chickens are very rare. So - not seeing worms doesn't mean they don't have them.

The wormer Hawkeye had used 2 months ago was Wazine which only works on roundworms, so if the hen had any other type of worm, she could have been infested a long time and the Wazine wouldn't have done squat about them.

I see that you did later get the info. I had not read about the 8cc dose and I just used the 4cc and was very pleased with the results.

Yep, all of the above! They are actually doing fabulously and showing no signs of distress in the cold. In fact, they are sometimes out wandering around in the cold when most of the other birds are inside! When I first brought them home, I was concerned they would be picked on by the LF birds, and since I had a dozen chicks in my grow out pen, I added the silkies to that pen instead. So those dozen birds became their friends and later when the dozen integrated into the main flock, I moved another pair of birds in with the silkies. So, by the time I integrated the silkies to the rest of the flock, they had at least 14 birds who are part of their flock, don't pick on them, and with whom they can snuggle up at night. Most of those younger birds sleep huddled together (with the silkies and a duck) in one corner of the coop, rather than getting up on the roosts. Plus, I am doing DLM so they have a really deep layer of bedding to snuggle down into. Most nights I go down with a flashlight after dark to check on the coop, just to make sure no one got left outside, and I always specifically check on the silkies. They are usually in the middle of the pack, looking very happy.

I haven't been online much the past few days. My brother flew in from Australia to visit and he was here such a short time I wanted to spend every available minute with him. I was so sad to drive him to the airport very early this morning - who knows when I will see him again. While he was here, I introduced him to the flock and he was fascinated by the silkies, calling them the funkiest chickens he had ever seen. Yesterday he asked me to take my camera down and take a picture of him holding one. Now he says one day he wants to have silkies too. It is so funny to see this strapping young Aussie guy getting so excited over froo-froo silkies

Right now he lives in an apartment and I told him they are great apartment dwellers if you put a diaper on them. You should have seen his face when he realized I wasn't kidding about there actually being chicken diapers out there.
Yes, I'm glad that I am worming them with the really good stuff. Hopefully no one else will come down "sick". I checked my other "old" hen (she's about 2yrs) and she is light weight. BUT then I realized she has no feathers! I looked her over and she blew all her feathers! She is a mass of pinfeathers. I can't believe she went into molt in the middle of winter. Geez. So glad that your brother came all the way over from Aus to be with you all for Christmas! LOVE the fact that he loved the silkies! I KNOW people (online, of course) that have indoor silkies! Actually, they made a big run in the living room, believe it or not. Plus they have diapers. But I saw their set up, looks like a really long dog kennel with rabbit feeders. I guess they'd have to clean it constantly to keep the smell at bay...

ppimf, if it were me buying an incubator for the first time I would go with the Brinsea. I know Sunflowerparrot had a hard time with them, but Hawkeye & I both have one that worked fine. I agree that the GQF Hovabator 1588 is hard to regulate, I have one & don't like it at all to incubate in, I hatch in it only.

Hawkeye, I hope the Ivermectin does the trick for your birds, it sure can't hurt anyway. I need to do that too, but haven't gotten to it yet. I also need to treat my coop & pens for mites again just in case. I hate to stress my birds too much right now though because some in my main coop have "colds". I hope your bird continues to get better.

Danz, don't the vaporizers cause a lot of moisture to build up in the buildings? That would be my concern because I know moisture is not a good thing in cold weather.

It's not quite as cold today as yesterday. I went out in my whole garb & came in sweating. Those down overalls my DH gave me are wonderful to cut the cold & wind when it's really bad out. It takes me awhile to get all suited up in it all, but worth it to not be so cold & frozen when I get done. I decided after not being able to find what I wanted for my head out shopping yesterday that I was just going to come home & look online for a crochet pattern & make one. I found two different ones & am trying out one pattern first & then will make the other & see which I like the best. I need to run to the Walmart & get some more yarn, but I'm waiting on my egg customer to come for her eggs & I don't know exactly when she's coming. She was going to come yesterday, but my DH decided he wanted to go to Wichita so I had to put her off until today. I sure need to get some eggs out of my refrigerator so I have room for something else. I need a bigger refrigerator, this one we have just isn't big enough, but any more it's a major investment to buy one. Well everyone have a good day & stay warm.
Totally agree with you on the Brinsea-- mine is running right now. LOVE it, no problems. I'm sorry you are fighting colds. No fun in this weather. Fortunately I'm not dealing with that, but I'm hoping the worming will have mine all healthy in no time. Sounds like you have an awesome winter get-up! So neat that you crochet! I am a knitter (for the last 10 years) and am trying to teach myself crochet because I really, really wanted this scarf in the shape of a fox, and I'm only on the paw and stuck! Ack!! I'm going to need to probably go down to Twist or find someone to help me out of my paw. ha! (it's worked in the round and I couldn't figure out if they are wanting a slip on each row, or just working around and around and then measuring it out. It just talks about do so many rounds and that's it. Frustrating.

Hawkeye, I see I forgot to answer you about DH's job situation. They cut his group in half so now the guys are working longer hours, weekends, overnighting, etc. We're very happy to still have a job but he is putting in lots of hours he wasn't used to. They've told his group there won't be anymore lay offs and are already discussing possibly hiring a couple guys back that were laid off. Planes started to sell again once the bankruptcy was final so it's going well. That would just be the absolute pits if you guys have to move. I'm praying for God's best for you guys.
Thank you! He's working on something local, and I'm praying! So sweet of you to pray for us too! I sure don't want to move! I'm soooo glad that your DH is safe! I know the Aero industry is so tricky right now. I just heard of the new business Spirit and his company are getting in. What a relief!!

This is usually one of my favorite times of year. When the seed catalogs start coming out and I get all excited about what flowers I am going to plant. I can't even consider looking after the hundreds and hundreds of dollars I lost last year due to the drought. It has always been my spark of light before the dawn to start ordering stuff. I have to concentrate on veggies for the birds this year and none of the pretty flowers I normally grow.
Gotta get back out there.
What a mess you had out there with the frozen water, broken hose, etc.. So sorry! I HATE winter. I know I've said that, but I can't say it enough. Anyway, I look forward to seed catalogs too! One of my favorite things to do is to plan my next shrubs, flowers and trees! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I did lose some plantings this summer too. I lost some plantings I had put in about 6 years ago. It was the Yellow Globe Arborvitae. So bummed about that! :( I lost two. Then i lost a White Pine that I planted about 5 years ago-- it was about 9 feet tall, so that was devastating. My roses and garden actually did quite well. But that's because they got watered every morning and night. I had a harder time keeping up with the trees and shrubs in the heat.

I don't know how we can handle more drought. This is miserable.

I bet she is fine. I've dealt with some comb injuries and they heal very fast. You did the right thing with the blue-kote and I'm guessing that's all she will need.

good luck with the fermented feed! I should try that too!!! I should really do that with my silkies and see if I can boost their immunity. I will probably have to look into finding the Mother soon. I have AVC without it. Sigh.

well, i did it lol. i got the brinsea, 20 with turner, $217 i can't wait till i get it full. does anyone know how many turkey eggs it will hold?
No idea on turkey eggs. They are much bigger, my turkey laid a pretty big egg. I would guess you could get about 15??? Maybe?? Maybe more! I just don't know. Congrats on the Brinsea and check the lid and make sure it fits perfectly! I never had any issues with mine, so hopefully you will get a perfect one like Trish and I did.

Maidenwolf, I'm pretty sure my dh will be going to Emporia in the next few days. Maybe we can work something out to meet with Danz and deliver again. Danz, you in on that?

Internet is miserably slow tonight. Here's the link to Maidenwolf's chick pics they are still uploading and have been for a very long time. More will continue to come to this folder.

Hawkeye, I really hope you get some chicks from those eggs. I'll bet you'll have a sweet surprise.

Trish, can I see a pic of what you are wanting to crochet? I'm wanting to make a hat out of fleece that I can scrunch around my face and long enough to go over my neck and tuck into my coat.

Danz, do you think that maybe it's because there is less water that it froze this year and not last?

I'm having a lot of fun with Maidenwolf's chicks. Most of them hatched beautifully on their own, the conditions remained steady but after 24 hours of a few of them pipped with no progress I went ahead and 'helped' if you can call it that. Two of the chicks I'm sure it really helped out. One had a shell that was so hard it was difficult to get into at all. The little chick gasped when I opened it and actually scared me. Another chick I'm not sure what was wrong but he was weak and the membrane was dry and there was no bleeding, he recovered quickly with just leaving him alone. There were 2 chicks that had a yolk sac issue, I'm sure they just weren't ready yet but they were going to be shrink wrapped since I had to help the others. One little chick, it seems like it was about a day behind the others in development, I don't know how that could be. All 4 that I helped are alive, 3 are fine and one still struggling but improving. I'm just not too hopeful that it's definitely going to be okay yet. All yolk sac issues are resolved, all chicks are in the brooder even the not so strong one. I'm dipping it's beak regularly to make sure it gets some calories. These little chicks are so beautiful, and one I think my dd slipped into the incubator with them because it was unmarked and looks like ours. So right now, I have 20 something chicks that hatched 10ish days ago and then I think 13 in the group from Maidenwolf all set up in the house. I keep going to the incubator to check on nothing, I get in such a habit of checking it. There are 3 brooders set up because some of the new chicks are tiny ones and I don't want them to get trampled.
