Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye- they are all bantams. I have 2 black ones that have long legs like that. I am thinking modern game?
yeah, probably so, since a lot of modern game (the popular color for them) is black! They are gorgeous birds, so if you got a few of those, you're going to LOVE, LOVE them!!! That is another very tempting bird that I would love to get into. I have no space and no more time for that, though! LOL These silkies are all consuming and going to take up half my yard when I'm done building breeding pens for them!

Yesterday we got our first chicken eggs! I hadn't checked for a week, so I think it was my Black Sex Link that laid them because there were 5 brown ones. My daughter had a sleepover last night, so a couple of the girls were so excited to do chicken and duck chores this morning.
that is so neat that the girls staying over got to participate in the chores! If they are in the city, they have no opportunity to be near and help around animals. Maybe it would encourage a love of chickens and ducks later on down the road!! We need more people involved in poultry of all types. Our county fair had hardly any birds there which was so sad, because they are so easy to keep and anymore, people can keep them IN town in their backyards, too. No reason why they can't do 4-H with their birds.

Too bad BYC can't afford to do national commercials that promote backyard chickens! That would be so neat! The movement would really pick up speed, I think!

Glad to have you join us. Love silkies and orps - you've made some good choices.

How many birds do you have and how long have you been keeping them?

Congrats on getting out of a ticket. I read awhile back that cops appreciate someone who doesn't make excuses and just tells the truth. The people who argue about the radar gun must not be working or their speedometer is out end up getting tickets. The people who say "omg, I just wasn't paying attention - I'm so sorry" - they are far more lenient. They had an anecdote about the cop who pulled over a guy for speeding and the guy kind of dreamily said "I've just been on the best date of my life - write the ticket for however much you like - it was worth it", and he was beaming so broadly the cop told him to take it easy and let him off with a warning.

Also, don't worry about not having the insurance card on you. As long as you are in state, they can look it up in their system that your insurance is current. It is only a problem if you are out of state.
Actually you are required by law to have proof of insurance in your car in Kansas. I don't know if you remember that I was a police officer in Oklahoma City for many years before moving back to Kansas. I had my license out and totally admitted my guilt. This is dumb if you want to get out of a ticket and plan to fight it, but I realized I was speeding when I saw his car. There was no way I was going to pretend I didn't know why.
I was a real be-atch when it came to traffic tickets. I never wrote a ticket that wasn't valid and I always had my ducks in a row. I also never lost a case in court because I made thorough notes on my copy and kept them in my ticket book.
I never let anyone off except one guy. I asked him if he knew what speed he was going and he said 47 miles per hour. It was in a 30 MPH zone. He was right on. I let him go and thanked him for his honestly and asked him to slow down. So I try to remember my days as a cop and try to stay professional as a citizen. I am just terribly lucky that he didn't write me a ticket.
I have one funny story. Late one night I stopped a car doing at least 20mph over the speed limit. It was a girl and she had tears in her eyes. She said she had to pee so bad and could I please let her go to find a restroom. She said she had been at a restaurant with friends. I could tell by her expression and her seat dance she really did have to go. I told her to follow me and took her to a nearby gas station that left their outside restrooms unlocked after they closed. She ran in and went then came out and thanked me.. until I handed her the speeding ticket. Then she got really mad. I told her next time to go before she got in the car. Like I said I was a bit of a terror but just doing my job.

Okay Maidenwolf here is what I think. I think you probably have some bantam Americaunas there and maybe some old english, or japanese. # 3 is a golden seabright.# 5 is a cochin, and I'd say # 6 is a Pheonix. Those long legs on that one sure look game bird like.

#3 and #5 died

#3 I figured buff brahma it had feathered legs

I looked but didnt see that ideal offered phoenix. The first one stumps me. I dont see any fluffy cheeks so I was going to rule out ameracauna. I will get a few more pics
I figured the long legged ones are modern game. I am thinking maybe some old english. They have a huge variety of old english. I am hoping for some japanese. Do I jusy look for short legs?

WichitaKidd, that was funny! When do you get your new chicks & what are you getting?

Sunflowerparrot, if you haven't already noticed there are over 400 pages on that FF meat forum, I started reading last night & got tired at page 100 & had to stop. I think mine is doing OK though & my birds are loving it. Even the ones that kind of balked yesterday except the turkeys gobbled it down later. I'm not sure the turkeys are going to go for it, but they have been getting picky lately about what they eat. I'm not sure really what to give them right now. I had been giving them both scratch & game bird feed, but now they seem like they don't want either of those, wet or dry.

maidenwolf, I have no idea on the bantams, I just haven't gotten into the bantam breeds at all, I prefer LF.

I think it's great that some of you like to show & are excited about it. For some of us though, it's just too much work & takes too much time & energy to even think about it. Just taking care of the birds & animals I have takes about all my energy right now. It seems like I'm always having to come up with new pens or something too all the time. I was even scoping out all the nooks & crannies where I could put another pen out there under the trees, I have two picked out for additional dog runs & I have my spot picked out & cleared for the most part for the other hoop house when I get ready to build it. I do like to have as good quality birds as I can afford for breeding purposes, but who really can guarantee even if you have expensive birds that they will always produce the best offspring. Hawkeye, even you see flaws in some of the chicks you have hatched from your birds. I think you have to just be honest about what you're selling if you sell birds & not mis-represent them to anyone. I'm not saying you do, don't take that the wrong way, I'm saying in general I think everyone should be honest when they're selling birds, but I'm sure there are people out there that aren't. In fact I know there are. I don't think anyone on this forum would do that but, I think you have to be careful if you're paying a lot for birds about who you buy them from. I just really prefer any more to buy breeders from other breeders that I know if I can or who have a good reputation. Otherwise you just don't know what you will get. I bought Ameraucana eggs from someone last year, wheaten & blue wheaten & one of the hens I got from those eggs is just literally an Easter Egger, she doesn't meet any color standards at all. I put her in my general laying flock & that's fine, but that's not what I paid for. Anyway, my original point was that it's OK if some don't want to show & we just want to have our own project birds to raise or pure breds for breeding. Showing isn't for everyone, it's very time consuming & not even something everyone wants to consider. I think we have to all respect what each individual is trying to achieve, whether it just be to raise their own birds for eating eggs or breeding to sell chicks. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Danz, that little roo I got from you has a mind of his own, he is a stubborn one. He has to be the very last bird in the coop at night. He won't let me herd him in at all & he isn't impressed with nighttime treats either at this point. If I try to get him in before he wants to go he will literally just run the opposite direction to somewhere I can't get him. I'll be glad when he gets used to the routine here & starts going in with all the rest. I'm afraid he's going to get left out one night & I won't see him, that would upset me a lot. I have been giving the FF to my two chicks in the house too & they just chatter over it & chow down, they love it too. I wish I didn't have to have it in the house, but right now while it's cold I don't have anywhere else to keep it. It seems to be working OK so far. I read that you do need to add some more ACV once a week or so to make sure your fermentation process continues because you're adding feed & more water all the time. I did see bubbles this morning when I looked in there first thing, so it must be doing all right. I decided with my general laying flock to feed them twice a day at least right now, I think that will work out better for them because they seem so hungry in the morning when I go out to let them out. I had 12 eggs out in the nest boxes this morning & usually I have about 8, so if that is due to the FF, then I'm all for it. I have some hens that lay later on in the day, but to have 12 eggs just in the morning, that was something. I do have one Welsummer that has now started laying & the other one should be starting any day now too, so I have more dark eggs now. I rarely get any eggs from my two marans hens any more, just once in awhile the one will lay. One isn't doing all that well, it just may be time to put her down, she just doesn't act right, she's been going downhill for awhile.

Most of the kids that go to school with my kids live in HOA neighborhoods, so they just love coming here. One of them just joined 4H for horses, she leases a horse at the local stable. The other family does have cattle that they keep a couple hours away, so they hire somebody else to take car of them. When the chicks and ducks were babies, we were a very popular places to have playdates.

My city is thinking about changing the laws about chicken keeping in non-agricultural zones, but they are thinking it might not help much because people will then still have the HOA laws that will prevent them from having backyard chickens.

Maidenwolf, congrats on your new baby chicks. I love seeing all the pics.

Hawkeye, I expect the butter to last 2 weeks. We don’t use any margarine. My 4 yo is clearly doing better, he’s up and running as though nothing happened. His voice sounds a bit scratchy still and he’s coughing a little. Me on the other hand, I can’t seem so shake it that fast. I called my dr.’s office yesterday but they couldn’t get me in. We found an urgent care clinic about 45 minutes away and went there instead. She just told me I have the flu and that yesterday was probably the worst day and to wait it out a few more days. GRRRR. My temp was 101 yesterday, no fever today but the cough keeps getting worse. I can’t even get anything done.

Checoukan, speaking of going to the dr. yesterday it reminded me that I saw a barn that looked just like the one you pictured and it made me think of you. I know you told me where you live and I was thinking it was farther south, the one I saw was near Savonburg.

Hawkeye, I really like Josie’s idea about having your son do a demo or a skit. That will make it less intimidating for them. My kids really relate to skits.

Danz, thanks for the link with the tracks. I’m going to try to print it. I think the tracks I saw looked more like the housecat only much bigger, the bobcat print looks more pointed and these were more circular. Can a big cat scream like that? We have gotten so spoiled with the fresh milk. Sometimes when we go out and if I crave coffee I won’t even bother to get it because I know they won’t have a cow nearby to get me my cream. I wonder why I can’t lose weight, duh. I feel good about giving fresh milk to my kids. When I was researching culturing milk for different things I learned that one of the bacteria that is already in the milk, but when it’s pasteurized of course it dies, but this particular bacteria is used to make a medicine that they give to cancer patients. I don’t know which bacteria it was, lacto... c. something or other. They all start with lact, but he second word started with a c.

The Mexican family just came to my door again wanting more chickens. It was really hard to try to communicate with them. I finally called my friend to talk to her but I felt bad handing her my phone to tell her that I’m sick and can’t chase the chickens today. I asked them to come back tomorrow when everyone will be back home. I don’t even know what I have left to sell them.

Welcome Jeannie, nice to meet you. You have some hatching right now? When are they due? I have some chicks due to hatch next week, I think. Someone threw out my calendar so I’m guessing on my dates now.

Cubbysan, what’s horse hair plaster? I’ve never heard of that. That’s really scary about the predator.

Welcome Kansas chick!!!

Holy cow Danz!!!! You got really lucky on that ticket. I so would have got a ticket, it doesn’t matter how careful I am they just like to get me. One time I got pulled over 2x in 1 week going through Yates Center. One time he said I didn’t have my seat belt on, the kids were all saying yeah she did. I always wear my seatbelt but it bothers my neck so I put it under my arm at times. He didn’t give me a ticket, and I really did have it on. The second time I was seriously talking on the phone and saying I have to be careful, there is a school zone coming up, Yates Center has meanie cops. I was looking for the sign for real. Well, there was a cop across the street from the sign and I get so freaked out when I see a cop he actually distracted me from seeing the sign. I was really trying to be careful and I got a ticket. To this day I don’t like going to Yates Center and when I do have to I don’t stay on the path, because I think I just look guilty no matter what. That was really nice that you let that lady have a potty break before handing her her ticket.
I think that’s just awesome about your dad showing interest in using the computer. I think he’ll really enjoy it.

Wichita Kidd, I thought you were serious about those chick IDs. I’m such a ditz. I have no idea at all what they are so it sounds good to me.

Hawkeye, I like your ds’s name. I have a friend who named her little one the same and I had never heard it before. It’s very cute, and fitting.

Loving all the pics Maidenwolf!!! On these little game birds, do they have longer legs or just stand taller? He really looks interesting just because his legs look so long. Do you know if you got girls or boys?

WichitaKidd, that was funny! When do you get your new chicks & what are you getting?
Not sure why they don't give chicken breeds "fun" names. Admit it...you would buy a Wookie-Poo if you could right?

New chicks should be here on or around March 5th. Decided to go with another mixed flock. I ended up combining my order with 3 other people to save on shipping charges which split 4 ways will end up around $3.50 per person. Can't beat that. Here's the list of all the breeds we ordered; 25 chicks in all.

Barred Rock *
White Rock *
Partridge Rock *
New Hampshire Red *
Golden Buff *
Delaware *
Rhode Island Red
Silver Laced Wyandotte
Black Australorp

I added a couple extra chicks to the order to get us to the next level to save more on shipping. I told a couple of the other people I ordered for that they will be getting "bonus" chicks. The '*' ones are what I selected for my flock of 12. The NHs & GBs I had the last time & they were great layers; consistently laying 6 eggs/week/bird. The rest will be new breeds for me. From what I've read they should all get along nicely. Nice weather days like today makes me wish they were already here. Can't wait for March to get here.

That sounds like a nice assortment of chicks. I have the Barred Rocks, you will love them, they are egg laying machines, right through the heat, cold, molting, whatever & their eggs are just huge. I just got two new pullets in that breed to start some more & they should start laying in about 3 months. I also have the Partridge Rocks, they're all right layers, not as good as some others, but in the good category. I also have the RIR, one full breed & two RIR/Buff Orpington crosses & they're all super layers, nice big brown eggs. I have the Black Australorps also & they're probably in the good category also for laying, cute little things, pretty calm. They do tend to go broody a lot though, I'll warn you about that. I had one broody most of the time last summer. I have the Gold Laced Wyandottes, but have had the Silvers previously & they're pretty reliable layers too, at least mine have been, I have two. I'm getting some Silver chicks in a couple of months as well. I have a very diverse group of layers in my main coop, but I like that. I like all the different colors & personalities they have. I'm glad you're getting back into chickens, you have to jump right back in, I'll bet you have missed them.

Well I got all the trough feeders put out in the pens today to feed the FF in. I discovered though I will have to cut another one for the main coop, I didn't make it long enough for all the chickens I have, so I will do that tomorrow. My chickens in the main coop just gobble that stuff down like I'm feeding them something wonderful, so I'm happy about that. The turkeys still aren't too sold yet, I guess it will have to grow on them. The peafowl took to it today though, they were chowing down. Then when the guineas saw them eating it they decided well if it was good enough for them we'll try it too, so they started eating it too. The only thing I don't like about it is the mess it makes when you're getting it out to take out to feed, that's the only downside I can see right now. That will be taken care of when I can move it outside.

It was so nice out today it was wonderful, it really makes me have spring fever, I can't wait for it to get here. I had intended to get something done in my coop today, but with making all of those feeders this afternoon it didn't happen. By the time I got all of those done & in the pens it was time to start feeding, then it got dark.

My DH must have what you all have had, he has been coughing his head off & has been in bed feeling awful for the last two days, not like him at all. I have had a kind of raw throat today, so I sure hope I'm not coming down with it too, I just don't need that right now.

Looks like a great assortment Wichita Kidd. Yay!!!

Oh Trish, I so hope ya’ll aren’t getting this crud too. It’s just been rampid.

Apparently, my dh went somewhere today and sent me this pic and said that he bought it. I can't wait to see it for real when they pick it up tomorrow.

I wonder whatever I shall do with it???? Hmmm, maybe it’s a good time to order some chicks.
