Consolidated Kansas

BTW, if anyone uses Poultry Bid on facebook, it is falling apart because the one moderator that is now in charge of the group (it was passed down to her) is deleting all of the big breeders that are in direct competition with her. So the original founder of The Poultry Bid has decided to open another group and admit any and all people-- all breeds, all people welcome. No one will be barred from the group (unless by conduct). Here is the link: (she is calling it "The Original Poultry Bid")

Hmmmm....tell more about myself? Not much to tell. Originally from So. CA. I transplanted myself to Kansas about 10 years ago. I have been in a relationship for almost four years with a native Kansan who was raised working on a farm and his parents own quite a bit of land which his brother farms. We have had chickens for about the same amount of time that we have been together. We have a garden every year and can, dehydrate, and freeze our produce. Purchase grass fed beef from his brother who has a small herd of cattle. It is the best beef I have ever eaten.

We have 12 RIR hens. Two RIR roosters that I had raised from a small batch of eggs we incubated, plus a Goldenlaced Wyandotte rooster that came in some chicks we ordered last spring. We have lost some of the original hens and one rooster mostly due to varmits. We have incubated a couple of small batches of eggs and mostly ended up with roosters, which eventually ended up on the dinner table. My two RIR roosters are very tame and you can walk up to them and pick them up. I wasn't able to hand raise this last chickens we got in the spring because I hurt my back and couldn't spend time with them. They are not tame. I do have one of the hens from the last batch of eggs we hatched out who will run up to me and wiggle around until I pick her up. In fact, if I don't pick her up fast enough she will peck my leg. If I'm sitting down she will come up to me and jump up into my lap. She loves being held.
It sounds like you are really getting into the rural Kansas life. I think that is wonderful.
@Danz--seriously--you have BIRDTOPIA, i have never seen so many happy HEALTHY breeds in one place- you inspire the rest of us!
That is such a sweet comment! My past was always a totally neat landscaped yard and nothing laying around. I am on the far opposite end of the spectrum now. But thank you so much for the nice compliment.
checoukan--Love the updates on the building-cannot wait to see pics of the finished project

I see we are all getting chick fever :) I think yesterdays weather only made us all more inpatient for that type of weather to get here

KansasChick--i just got a little swedish girl this weekend that seem like she might be one that likes to be handled and petted--hopefully she will stay that way as its so nice to have her come right to me

I ordered Bargain #3 from Mt. Healthy and got 75 Partridge Rock roosters and 25 Partridge rock hens last summer. I was very satisfied with the health and type from that company.
ocap, do you have Mandarins? I do. I have 7 of them and a pair of Wood ducks. They are probably the most beautiful birds I have in in my opinion.
Mammahen that is what the picture on the avatar is. Your husband and kids really liked them when they were here.

Hey All ! New blood here (yikes) lol :) Long time lurker first post. Any place that list upcoming swaps or auctions like the one at gardner fair grounds
last year? Thanks in advance.
Welcome, you no longer have to lurk. Go ahead and share whatever you want. If you've been reading along I think you know we just chat about everything. As far as swaps and auctions Craiglist is a good place to check. Chicken chatter on face book sometimes has some stuff. If you go to the HOAGBA website they have the Gardner auctions and the Overbrook Swap meets listed. Not sure where you are but there is a swap meet the last Saturday of the month at Premier Farm Supply in Topeka that usually starts in April and ends the end of September. There is also one on Sunday at the North TSC in Topeka. I am thinking it is the third Sunday of the month. There is one in Manhattan at the TSC I think the first Saturday or Sunday of the month in season. I think Trish has been trying to make a list of them on Kansas Poultry Swap as well. I think there is one that they are holding in Garnett now too but not sure when it is.
Let us know if you are looking for something. Or if you are trying to sell join the Kansas poultry Swap. Vague information but I hope it helps. There'll be more info available later when things get into season.
Yates Center has an exotic animal auction 3 times a year. They do have some poultry but they are in the cages and you just buy by the cage. I think they auction anything that is left on Sunday. Usually it gets picked over really early on Saturday. They have a pre spring auction normally in March, Then one about May and one in September.

I was busy all day and am totally convinced I need drugs to treat ADHD. It's no wonder I never get anything done. I bounce from project to project and never quite finish anything.
DH has been working on my old camper trailer turning one of the side storage compartments into a pop door of sorts, and finishing reinforcing and fixing the rotted areas. It may look pretty awful but I think it will make a great chicken grow out building and pen. I really wanted to get the birds moved today but it is once again postponed.
I need to make up some forms and put leg bands on some of the birds I am moving out there so I can track what breed everyone is. I can tell most of them apart but I'm afraid when I start mixing them all together I'll get confused. It will be obvious when they are all grown but in the meantime I don't want to confuse a cheap white rock with a very expensive white exhibition orpington etc.

Mammahen white rocks and white plymouth rocks are the same thing.
Hawkeye thanks for the positive comments on that rooster boy. The picture really doesn't do him justice. He has beautiful colors which aren't obvious in the picture. I would have never intentionally mixed those two breeds but the outcome was really pretty. I'm selling all of my Phoenix in a couple weeks and I will really miss the beautiful hackle, saddle, and tail feathers the Phoenix boys have. But it is a necessary part of my Danzising.
I have to cut some breeds and the Phoenix just happens to be one I got a very good offer on.

Frizzled Pink, where did you get your SFH pullet? Most of mine are fairly friendly, but the one I got from Eileen is the most friendly little bird I've ever had. I can go right up to her & pick her up & she likes to follow me around too, she is such a cutie. I still have the other rooster, nobody has even asked me about him. He's just too expensive & too pretty to have to eat, I hope someone needs him soon. He is really lonely in the cage he's in.
I LOVE THIS--so happy for her and you.

Welcome SpooncreekJenn! Post any time, we're a chatty bunch here. If you go to the Kansas Poultry Swap on Facebook you will find a list of all of the swaps & auctions that I know of or people have given me info for. There is a category at the top of the page that says files, click on that & it will bring up all the docs & you will see the swaps & auctions doc. Here is the link for the Kansas Poultry Swap, you will have to ask to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/275183675880038/

I went out & worked my rear end off this afternoon. I was determined that I was going to get the walls up inside my new coop today no matter what it took. I got one all the way up before my DH got out of bed to come see what I was doing. He came out & helped me for a few minutes cutting some boards & helping me get the 2nd wall up then he had to go back in & back to bed. He still isn't feeling well at all. I hope he can go to work tomorrow because he is starting some training & will be on first shift instead of 2nd. Anyway, after he went back in I got the framework put up for the 3rd wall, but just when I was ready to put in my last screw the last battery died for my screwdriver so I had to quit. I will go out tomorrow & finish putting up that last wall. Then I plan to put hardware cloth over the windows & if I get that done I will start putting up the chicken wire on the top half of the walls. I planned it that way to have air circulation through the whole coop so that when I open the end windows there will be a nice breeze through from the south. This way the bottom half is covered & at least while inside the roosters won't be able to see each other & fight. The will be able to see each other when in the outside pens, but it should be OK. They won't be able to get to each other, just argue. Some of the ones I have could care less about the other roosters & I have a couple that like to aggravate the ones in the pen, especially my Speckled Sussex rooster, Speckie, he will pace back & forth for hours teasing the black Ameraucana rooster.

Well even the turkeys got hungry enough tonight to chow down on the FF, so that makes me happy. The guineas & peafowl went right for it when I fed them tonight too, no hesitation there at all. I'm so glad they all like this stuff since it's kind of a mess to deal with. I did get 14 eggs today too & that is way more than I have ever gotten in one day. I don't know if it's as a result of the FF or not, but it has happened since I started feeding it. Danz, have you seen an increase in the number of eggs you're getting or can you tell?

Thanks Ocap, I will look them up. What is that colorful bird in your avatar?

They brought my new pens home, they are really super heavy. They already warned me they’re not moving them again. It's already in the brooder room. I don't know what I'm going to do with all of these brooder pens. I have more brooder space than I have outside space so it seems even if I wanted to I shouldn't fill them all because I won't have a place to put them when they're older. These cages have lighting already but it’s fluorescent lights so that will have to be changed. It looks like it’s some type of fixture out of a pet store. It’s huge and heavy and opens easily for cleaning. It has tracks in it for trays to fit in the bottom but the trays are gone. We could use just a board, I’m not sure how we will do that. First we will need to do the lights. I took a couple of pics but I haven’t looked to see if the pics are clear enough to post yet.

Hawkeye, your stacking cages look much easier to handle and compact. I think what you got will be nice for something to use inside.
Wow, those sound really awesome!! Okay, so they took regular metal cages and then built a frame to put them in and stack them?? And I bet you can find the trays that fit in them! Trish always seems to know where to find the trays that fit in the bottom of slide out cages. When she jumps on, might want to ask her and you could order them or hunt them down, etc... If you use a board, you could think about using plexiglass-- it would clean better and not hide mites. Thanks, I'm hoping my stacking cages will work out great. They are plastic. But several other silkie people got them and were raving over them and so I put it on my Christmas wish list. They said they were fairly sturdy for the bantams. I'm always dragging in my dog kennels into the house when I wash birds, so I was hoping this would be a better idea, and not take up a lot of floor space.

Hawkeye-I thought I had a post multied for you but it isn't here.....hmmmmm. Anyway, I do remember that you thought your injured boy was doing better and that is fabulous news! I wish my chickens would make recoveries more often, seems like that hasn't worked in my favor lately.

Well, I need to go out and treat my birds in the dark with ivermectin. I am dragging my heels but I really need to get it done. Ugh. Got the pod packed today too so that was good since they are picking it up this week and hauling it down to the house for us. It takes a whole week because it has to be "processed" through the Wichita Pod facility before they can ship it to its final destination so that was a bit frustrating. The truck that hauls it down will only be taking the one pod, it is kind of a shame they can't just bring it straight to the house but oh well! I am scared to open it when we get there because it is so full!!

Danz- I hope our pens come out as nice as yours. We have used your pen design and your metal run in as inspiration for our pens. I sure hope they are as sturdy! I am wiped, off to tend to the birds.
Well, I've not had the greatest luck this winter, either. My best hen died and then I had that other little boy die. Neither of them from typical illness. I am just having weird things happen. I multi'd your post about the trailer and tire and then forgot to respond! Sheesh! Meant to say that was so nice the guy stopped, but what a bummer you missed making it to the dump. But at least you didn't have to leave the trailer and go back and have a bigger mess on your hands. Are you doing the pour on Ivermectin, or are you doing the injectible in the water?? I used the injectible two or three weeks back?? I think it worked GREAT! I actually saw worms being passed! I never noticed anything before that. Crazy! Everyone seems to be doing great now. (crossing fingers!)

I want to see these metal run in pens that Danz has. THAT is exactly what I'm wanting to do for my breeding pens!! I'm thinking of setting a bunch of posts in a large rectangle and then fencing it all off, and then putting up corrugated (metal?? maybe) roofing over the pen and leaving the sides all OPEN (just fencing) and just fencing it in and then sectioning it off into smaller pens on the inside. Thinking of putting in a door every 5 or 6 feet and then each pen can be divided again in half for breeding pairs or trios, grow outs, chicks, etc.... Oh the ideas!!!! LOL It would mean wrapping it all in plastic come winter. So I wonder if I can scrap up some siding for the bottom half of the pen... like cover up the bottom 3 feet so wind mostly stays off of them to cut down on the plastic use or even not use it at all if the wind is off of them, but they have the fresh open air going through the top when it's not freezing cold the rest of the year.

Danz, you can buy a big box of the bandettes to mark your birds. The cool thing is that next year, buy a different color and then you'll know which year they are. I am using bandettes right now, but I think this year, I'm going to go ahead and break down and buy the ABA perm bands because it counts when you are showing your birds. But otherwise, there is no real reason to have them. The bandettes are cheaper-- and they are a spiral with a number and they are easy to unroll a bit and snap on the bird's leg. Also, it helps because if the bird grows a bit, it won't cut into the leg. I buy them big-- and they have lots of room.

Forgot to mention to WichitaKidd-- wanted to wish you good luck on finding a rural home with property out here in the country! I don't think you'd regret that move at all! Just check your HOA's if you buy something that is in a "neighborhood". I'm in one of those--- where we all own 10 acres and we're in a neighborhood. BUT--- we're allowed to have horses, cows, goats, chickens, whatever. I do think there is a blurb about NOT owning swine.. But if I decided to raise a pig or two (not a whole herd of them) I don't think my neighbors would say anything. So you can find properties that allow everything you want to do. I will say that down here South of Wichita in the Clearwater, Mulvane, Haysville area--- our prices are more reasonable.

monmahen, you can get the trays either metal or plastic from bassequipment. com. I have them for all of my rabbit cages because I have them in the garage. I was going to get the plastic trays, but I think by next winter I will have the rabbits in the hoop coop & won't need trays. Bass Equipment is in Missouri, so it's not far to ship things. I have been very happy with everything I have ordered from them..

Chicken Danz -Thanks for the info what I wanted to know.

Trish- Got it Thank you !
