These are belgian bearded d'uccle. The coloration is called mille fleur. They are just fine in heat and cold as long as you provide proper housing just like with any other chicken. I have mine in with all my birds even 2 turkey. Being a smaller bird they tend to watch out for larger birds coming their way. They are super small just beautiful
I get some monster eggs once in a while. Particularly after a bird goes through a molt and has started laying again. Many that I can't close the lid on a large size egg carton. By the way Sharol I have 3 of these little campines here. One definite rooster.( Let me know if you think you might be interested in them later.)They are so pretty but I'm not sure I am going to have a place to breed them. I'd let you have all of them for what I had in the eggs if you were interested. They are such pretty birds. If I don't do some more downsizing I may end up living alone!Besides I![]()
still want to meet you. I keep thinking I'll meet you for coffee in Emporia but for the past few months I haven't done anything but run. It amazes me what a difference there is in egg sizes from chickens.
Maidenwolf how are your babies doing today? I sure hope the others are surviving.
Not sure why they don't give chicken breeds "fun" names. Admit it...you would buy a Wookie-Poo if you could right?![]()
New chicks should be here on or around March 5th. Decided to go with another mixed flock. I ended up combining my order with 3 other people to save on shipping charges which split 4 ways will end up around $3.50 per person. Can't beat that. Here's the list of all the breeds we ordered; 25 chicks in all.
Barred Rock *
White Rock *
Partridge Rock *
New Hampshire Red *
Golden Buff *
Delaware *
Rhode Island Red
Silver Laced Wyandotte
Black Australorp
I added a couple extra chicks to the order to get us to the next level to save more on shipping. I told a couple of the other people I ordered for that they will be getting "bonus" chicks. The '*' ones are what I selected for my flock of 12. The NHs & GBs I had the last time & they were great layers; consistently laying 6 eggs/week/bird. The rest will be new breeds for me. From what I've read they should all get along nicely. Nice weather days like today makes me wish they were already here. Can't wait for March to get here.
Sharol I've lost track as well. Just looked up the purchase and I figure they were hatched about the first of November. I am thinking there are two girls and a boy but I have so many young birds right now it's hard to remember. The boy could always be a small meat bird but I think having a trio to breed with would be nice. I notice him all the time because he is always sitting on top of the railings in the brooder house. Those were the prettiest chicks I think I've ever seen. I loved their little leopard spots when they were new hatches. No rush on this. I just thought I'd mention it.
Michelleml, I have a nice group of the mille fleur d'uccles as well as a group of porcelains which are really pretty as well. I do have one that is laying and I've hatched a few babies. Let me know later if you want some. I will be getting ready to hatch for sale before long.
Wow Josie that has taken forever. Mind came in like 2 days!
This cat I homed has been throwing up a lot according to Dennis. It doesn't appear to be hairball although she is long haired. He said she is not gobbling food and is eating slow. Do you think she is wormy or more likely the change in food? What can you worm a cat with? I sure don't want her infecting my other two if she has worms. She appears to have very dry poo like she could be deyhydrated but is drinking well as well. Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to make a trip to Emporia and spend a fortune on labs for her. I'm trying to try the obvious first. She is pretty skinny which makes me wonder about the worms, but doesn't act sickly or anything.
Hawkeye I mentioned on there I had some Mandy boys for sale. I only have one female out of my 5 babies last year. I will probably sell a pair at Gardner cause last spring they were bringing about $125 each. ..so that was $250 a pair. But the boys by themselves won't bring nearly as much....they are the pretty ones...but everyone wants to try breeding them. If they don't study up on it it's not going to be successful anyway. I have one pair of Woods as well. I am hoping to get 2 batches of Mandarins and one batch of Woodies this year. I really need to get the extras sold out of there. % extra birds can really dirty the water.
Yeah Hawkeye am at the wear out point. I need to keep moving or I'll not get anything finished.
Maybe I can crash early this evening.
Thanks for sharing the pictures i noticed you have chain link fencing around your run does it have something on top also? do you have any issues with predators? I want to build a new run but trying to find the cheapest way to go but safe for my flockMaidenwolf, I found a few more pics of your chicks on my camera and I uploaded them to the same folder.

BYC doesn’t like to upload pics for me so I’m uploading the pics I took yesterday onto photobucket. Included in this folder are:
* 2 pics of the stacked cages, I need to get more pics because these don’t show enough.
*A few pics of at least one of the barred rocks from Danz.
*Toby, the lavender orp from Josie.
*Chief and Banshee from Maidenwolf.
*Tracks from what I am guessing got our turkey Colt(from Maidenwolf) a couple of nights ago . I wish I had put something next to them so you could see the size of these prints better. They look like huge dog prints and you can clearly see the claws/nails too. From looking at the link from Danz, I’m thinking they are coyote because the outside toes are more spread awayhanks myshome/1-20-13/
Ocap, the Mandarin is beautiful. I’ve never seen a duck so colorful before. I had to look up what pinioned meant. I don’t think I could do that myself.
Maidenwolf, those chicks were beautiful when you got them and it’s so amazing to see how they change as they grow in their feathers. They are just going to be really pretty birds.
Sharol, OMGosh!!! That is a huge egg. I was just looking at chicks to order from the hatchery and the Delawares keep getting my attention. They’re very pretty. It almost looks like there were 3 yolks in that egg.
Michelle, I think I am going to use it as a brooder. It wouldn’t be big enough to keep big chicks in for long though. It’ll be great for the first few weeks for sure. We just need to get it wired for the right lights and it’ll be good to
