Consolidated Kansas

Thank you HEChicken. I went and did some looking around the origin site for the URL you sent, and found an email.
Wrote to find out about this year's sale and got the following response from [email protected]:

"Good morning,

My name is Marrionetta Garvin and I will be the one handling the spring pullet sales this year. At this time, we have not started taking orders. We are running behind this year. I have been telling people call or email me on a weekly basis and I will keep them posted. Sorry for any inconveniences.

Thank you, Marrionetta Garvin

Oh awesome - I have been wondering since I think they posted the sale around Jan 20th last year....I'm still debating whether to get any or not. Its a long drive up there and I really have enough egg layers for now.

Can anyone tell me how to sex a juvenile buff brahma? I have two buff brahmas that were born in August, supposed to be pullets. I got several light brahma juveniles of the same age from the same breeder. One of those is clearly a rooster at this point, alpha to the youngsters, crowing in the morning, a bit longer comb than the pullet/ and his tail is a little longer and pointier than that of the pullet. He crows with the big roo and stands his own when the big roo attempts to check out the little light brahma pullet. But I am confused about the buff brahmas. They are nearly identical, unlike the light brahma youngsters. One is a little heavier, but it is the slimmer one who acts alpha of the two. She/he for a time was fighting for alpha position of the youngsters, but gave up on that. She/he is still alpha of the buffs. Their combs are identical, length midway between that of the light brahma roo and pullet. She/he did try to mimic the crowing of the little light roo for a couple weeks, a feeble attempt - but the light brahma roo's early attempts were pretty feeble too. She/he isn't doing any more crowing, and is clearly submitting to the leadership of the little light roo. Could she/he still be a roo, who has just given up on being the alpha roo? Maybe the buffs were a little younger than the lights?? I'm just puzzled. I don't have a digital camera or I'd send pictures. Thanks for any input. Sara

I'm going to get out there & work on panels today & see if I at least can get the 3 inside panels made for my pens. That will take me awhile because I have to use cable ties, a lot of them to hook the chicken wire on with. I have about 4 1/2 bags of ties from Walmart, so that at least should get me started. Danz, thanks for the ideas on the gates, I think I pretty much have them figured out now, it's just cutting wood & putting them together. Then I'm going to staple on that fence I have laying here. I won't be getting any help from my DH the rest of the week, he's working late & it will be dark by the time he gets here. I sure hope the little bit of rain we got helped soften the ground out there a bit so the posts will go in.

Well everyone enjoy the warm day, at least it's supposed to be 61 here today.

Sara Joy we really need pictures and ages on the brahmas to tell. A brahma boy will be really leggy compared to the girls. And they do tend to develop their combs pretty early. They should be taller and leaner looking.
I'm in a real quandary today. My hand is hurting worse than ever. I have both shipments of birds going out today so I need to be ready to house them. I honestly don't have a place to put them. I was thinking I might slap together some temporary housing for them but I can't seem to use my thumb and index finger or get a grip on anything...including my darned coffee pot this morning. It's a good thing God gave me two hands cause If I couldn't poor coffee with my left hand the whole world would be in danger!!

I'm stressing a bit trying to decide what to do. I have a chicken tractor but it's filthy and I'm not even sure it will be big enough for these brahmas. I thought about buying one of the chicken coops from Orschlens and using it as a prototype to build others but I don't even think I can run the drill to put it together. They probably aren't as strong as I'd like for protection either. I would build my own a lot more substantial I think.
At any rate I have to get the brooder cleaned out anyway and move some birds around.
I wanted to divide my SFH and d'uccles as well. I saw a SFH roo attempt to breed a little d'uccle hen yesterday. Oh my, that poor little hen!!! But I guess that can wait another day or two if it has to. I need to get all the pups to the vet but it will probably have to be a project for tomorrow.
So here I sit sipping my coffee worrying about all I need to do and not moving!! I tend to shut down when I get stressed.
I guess I need to run out and see if my chicks made it through the night again that wouldn't go in the house last night. Dumb birds! I would hate to loose them at this point.
Josie I'm sending you a PM.

Danz, I wish you were closer & we could help each other out! You just have to take it easy & let that hand heal or you may end up in worse shape. Can you just put the birds in somewhere temporary until your hand is better? I know the feeling really, I have birds coming that I have no idea where they're going as of yet.

Would a dog kennel that is 16 ft long, 6foot high and 6 ft wide be okay for run for at least 12-15 ckickens? I still will free range but on those days they can't. Is this big enough?

Sorry your hand hurts so badly still, try to take it easy.

I wanted to divide my SFH and d'uccles as well. I saw a SFH roo attempt to breed a little d'uccle hen yesterday. Oh my, that poor little hen!!! Ugh, I just went out and my giant lavender orp roo was on top of a tiny bantam cochin hen so I guess I need to move them into a separate pen again! But I guess that can wait another day or two if it has to. I need to get all the pups to the vet but it will probably have to be a project for tomorrow.

Minimum space requirements for large fowl birds are 4 square feet in the coop per bird and 8-10 square feet in the run per bird. So a 16 ft by 6 ft run is 96 square feet of run space divided by 15 LF birds gives you 6.4 square feet per bird. How big is your coop? If they are squeezed on space in the coop too the run might be too small but if you free range several days a week all day and they have their 4 square feet in the coop I bet you will be ok. You have mostly orps right? It is easier to keep more birds in a smaller space if they are a docile breed. If you had leghorns or something flighty I would say that would be a squeeze.

It is sooo nice out!!! I can't believe its February. I am just taking a break to eat a sandwich and then back outside to finish cleaning up. I have a bunch of fencing and stuff to get rid of. I am thinking of just posting it on craigslist for cheap because it is used and remnants of stuff. If anyone on here wants it and can come pick it up in the next week or so let me know before I post it! You will need a big truck or a trailer, mostly welded wire fencing that is rolled back up, lots of remnants from projects.
