Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye- thank you for all your info. I knew you werent ignoring me. I know you raise top of the line birds and didnt even want to ask you. I have looked in the past at some of the chick days and so far havent found silkies. I want to buy a few chicks, I do have a pen already for just silkies. I do research any new breed I intend to get because I know some have special needs. I would not feel comfortable free ranging silkies around here and when my bantam cochins go out I think I may pen them too. When we got the silkie in my bantam mix from Ideal and my daughter fell in ove with it I knew I had to find her a couple. That little silkie just got too chilled and didnt last more than a couple days. If you can lead me in the right direction please pm me and let me know. I know you would have good info on good birds.
Last August the farmer that does the chick days in Harrisonville did have Silkies, but they were sold while I was in line. I think somebody bought all of them, so when they do have chick days, try to get there first.

Also TSC does occassionally get some mixed in with the bantams. My daughter had actually seen them last year, and by the time I got there, they were sold but the clerk did confirm that they were there. I believe TSC chick days start this week.

Thank you I will check it out

I have been off for the past three days and have a whole bunch of stuff to read. Arrrgh.

My FIL has asked my DW to plan a family reunion in Kansas this summer. As almost everyone lives west of the Rockies except for a sister in Chicago and a brother in Tennessee. So she has charged me with asking all of you for ideas of places that would be fun to visit or activities. You would think we would have plenty after living here for nearly 20 years, but I figured getting other people's ideas might help.

Thanks in advance.

Danz, that is really neat that the turkeys cleaned up so well! I wonder why they didn't smell, that is interesting!! I bet they will be tasty! Sounds like you are going down in numbers-- yay! :) Hope you get fertile goose eggs.

Josie-- I'll bring the kids' LeapPads and a couple of coloring books. But honestly, they are easy to entertain, and if Karen's kids are there, they will be soooooo excited about that. They have already met (and LOVED) Karen's kids! :) You don't need to buy extra tools to put the hangers on with-- I just use pliers and they actually work great! They don't have to be twisted around, they just have to be bent down enough to grab onto the bumps on the T-post. We'll bring our T-post driver. Oh-- did I mention we have one of those?? It's easier if more than one person is doing that-- you can leap frog around each other with two people driving posts.

Karen-- so excited you will be there!! The kids will go nuts when they find out your kids will be there too! Cool! Hopefully we can get it all knocked out fairly quickly.

MaidenWolf-- I agree, I'd call ahead and ask your farm store when they get their chicks in and plan on getting their EARLY! Then you'll be sure to get your silkies!

OH--- and speaking of, I will be in (or near) Oskaloosa, KS on March 15-16th for the Jefferson show at the county fair grounds. It's strictly a 4-H event, but everyone uses that show as a great excuse to bring all kinds of birds and do a mini-swap out in the parking lot! I met Ozwakie and Duck up there last year! Pretty cool to run into them! Anyway, back to the show, I have a breeder (possibly show-- he has been shown about 3 times and has done fairly decent) quality blue silkie rooster for sale I can bring up, and I have two pet-quality Splash roosters. I still haven't decided if I will let go of my two pet quality pullets-- they are Splash. I would need a guarantee they would go into protected pens because they have big crests and can not see.

Mstng-- are you wanting ideas for the KC area-- or also Wichita areas as well? Lawrence has that really cool train station museum by the tracks.

Mustang67, It's a ways from you but a while back there was talk about touring the salt mines at Hutch. It sounded interesting to me. In Lucas, Kansas there is the Garden of Eden. And then if they appreciate nature and plants there is Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine.
Canchaser if this was last year I would have definitely recommended Ivywoods, but she sold all of her birds except layers because she is moving. She lives outside of Hiawatha. I will have some chicks later but I am a couple hours away from you.
Hawkeye, It almost makes me want to butcher a chicken here now just to see if they still smell or if it is just that turkeys don't stink. Josie didn't you guys butcher your big boy? Did he smell like a chicken when you butchered him?
But alas I've moved all the roos I want to for now. I have my "it" feed buddy but until he he becomes a problem or starts breeding some thing he is going to stay.
I have a few young ones I could cull yet but I really want to see what sells for 4-H and what I want to keep for my breeding stock.
Speaking of that since I got rid of all my young birds that the one Pheonix hen had brooded I only had Mr. No Toes left. He was still sleeping in the green house by himself. I caught him today and put him in the ghetto pen. I hope he does okay with all those other birds. I just hated to see him so lonely. I am such a sucker for the birds with problems. I think I have to nurse them back to health.
Josie I wanted to ask you about something too. Mammahen had helped a neighbor with sick birds and was trying to help the lady medicate her birds to get them well. She said she got some Gentamicin and used it in a nebulizer or vaporizer and it cleared the respiratory infections. I guess they were using it in some form at the dog kennel her kids were helping at. I was wondering about this since it has never been mentioned here. The only thing I had ever used that for was for eye infections I had. Is there a liquid form one could use for birds? I ask because my stupid d'uccles have started sneezing again. I get them cleared up and they start over in time. I want to see if I can eliminate it all together. I haven't had any die from it so I could have a necropsy but I hate seeing them sneeze.

There are so many ideas I don't know what will work for you. In the Wichita area there is the Sedgwick County zoo, Exploration Place and various other museums like the African American museum, Historical Museum, Art Museum and Native American Museum/exhibit. There are the Flint Hills which are really a must but are a day outing. I think it is near Salina that the Tanganyika Wildlife exhibit is located. And there is the Underground Salt Museum near Hutchinson (awesome). Outside of cities, I can't remember where it is located but there is a place done entirely in concrete that is a must-see - an eccentric old guy built his house and entire landscaping all out of concrete - has to be seen to be believed. Hays has a Dinosaur museum that is worth a visit. Back in Hutchinson there is the Cosmosphere. If you are into lake activities, El Dorado Lake, among others, has lots of activities. Abilene has a lot of history due to it being the hometown of President Eisenhower, and there is also a huge chocolate factory there where you can do tours and shop your heart out at their store that sells rejects at low prices.

I'm sure there are many other things I can't think of off the top of my head. For a family cookout, many parks have BBQ grills and shelters with picnic tables you can use.

Oh yes, I also have a t-post pounder so you can borrow that too - makes short work of driving in the posts. The t-post wire tie tool really works great. It takes a moment to get the knack of it but once you do, you can put a wire around the t-post, and then with the tool, bend it to loop around in a couple of seconds. I'll put my name on it for you!

I didn't get anything done on my hoop house today. I had a friend come over for lunch and with preparing food for her and then visiting with her, it just seemed to take up the whole day. DD had a lesson I had to take her to, and we followed my friend down the driveway as she was leaving, and didn't get home until dark so it felt like the whole day got away from me with no progress. And the next couple of days are supposed to be too wintry to do a lot of work outside. I am so ready for it to be spring already.

Please don't laugh at me too much but I'm really freaking out about how much snow they are calling for. I'm from central texas and the most snow I've seen is maybe 2 inches. Should I put plastic on chicken run? to keep snow out of the run?

I wouldn't michlleml. The weight of a serious accumulation could do some serious damage to your run. I would just let it fall in - the chooks probably won't want to come out in it at first but eventually some might venture out and walk through it. If they choose not to, it probably won't stick around long before it melts and then it will be back to business as usual.

michelleml, you are in the area where there is going to be quite a lot. I've had drifts up to 3 feet high in my pens and the birds do fine. When they decide to get out they just walk on top of it. You are actually better to leave everything open because the snow is more likely to blow through rather accumulate and drift. And if you put plastic like on the north side it could cause the snow to whip around and drift higher in the pen. Chickens are tough. They are raised without heat in Alaska. They are raised in Sweden. I worry a whole lot more about heat than cold with them.
I understand your fear though. My daughter lives in Austin and if it gets 40 degrees she think she and her birds will freeze to death! She rarely even has any heat on in her house.
I stepped out the back door while ago to give the dogs the rest of the chicken and noodles I cooked for dinner last night. DH just doesn't like them much and I love them. I figured I might as well make the dogs happy any way. Man is it cold out there. I can't imagine another front moving in and making it worse. It's not going to be one of those days I enjoy feeding and watering for sure.
There won't be any building going on either. I can't handle that cold.
