Consolidated Kansas

Their cute! Wish I had time for ducks. How many eggs are left to hatch?
Actually, I have no idea! She started with 14, I think, but she may have tossed some as time went on. She also moved her nest from one end of the dog kennel to the other halfway through and some may have been left behind. I don't really check under the broodies once they get started, unless there is a bad smell.

I don't find the ducks really take any additional time. They live in the same coop and yard as the chickens and turkeys, eat the same food, drink from the same waterer. I do have a wading pool set up in the summer so any of the birds can step in to cool their feet and so the ducks can bathe, but at the moment only the 2 drakes use it, since the ducks are all either broody or tending to ducklings.

People have said they are messy and hard to take care of and I have too many birds for my space as it is. I need to figure out what I'm keeping and start downsizing some. I'm headed out now to build nest boxes on a small coop I built this spring. I think it has cooled off a little so maybe I won't get heat stroke.

SO, I had it bass ackwards? Oh well, it was a while ago.
In my experience it is the females who feather out the fastest, particularly the tail. I love to see tail feathers sprouting in the first few days as those almost always end up being the girls. You would think since the cockerels end up with the larger tails, they would be the ones who would need the headstart but it doesn't seem to work that way.

Hello everyone! I haven't read up recently, but I've got a duck (Khaki campbell female) that I think is pretty serious. I think she might have bumblefoot. She has two swollen spots with dark sections in the middle. She was hanging out in the pool and seems to be pulling feathers out pretty bad (I couldn't find any signs of a predator attack and all the other birds are fine). I'm guessing that she's got a fever because of the way she's acting, but I have no way to tell for sure. I can do bumblefoot surgery on her tonight, but is there anything else I can do for her? THe only stores we have close by are Orscheln's and WAl-Mart, so any meds will have to be something I can get from there. The only antibiotic I have on hand for birds is Duramyacin. Is it bad to use it for waterfowl?

ARRRRGGGGG!

I have maybe 8 eggs that may or may not hatch in the next couple of days, no rooster, and my Buff Orpington has decided she wants to be a mommy. She pecked me and growled at me today when I took her egg and has spent the entire day in her favorite laying spot on the floor next to the waterer. I put her back up on the roost a few minutes ago, and she went right back to the hot spot on the floor. Talk about lousy timing.

Day 19 and no activity with the eggs, so who knows.

I guess I just need sympathy. ;-)

It may end up being great timing. After they hatch, she might accept them to raise...

Sharol don't expect to see any activity with those eggs for at least another day or two. And since you are using that styro, give it at least 3 days extra before you pull the eggs. I know you are really anxious but I feel you have a decent chance.
I am so far behind and I just skimmed through reading. I had a great day yesterday with company here but I am just exhausted. I hurt all over from the house cleaning. I know that sounds silly with the busy schedule I have but it uses a whole different set of muscles.
I have to get some Swedish Flower girl chicks ready and take them to meet their new parents here in a little bit. This gal is driving a great distance and has waited to see how may females I had. They certainly are paying off better than the babies do. But now I have some extra cockerels I don't know what to do with. One of them is just gorgeous and I may have to keep him for a future breeder.
I have a bin full of peachicks here. They just move all the time. Now they are starting to fly around. I really need to find another place to keep them where they'll have more room. And there's still more eggs in the incubator too so I do expect to hatch some more. I may let all the future eggs be raised by the peahens. I am pretty confused how on earth I will keep colors straight now as it is. I've got my own eggs and got eggs from other sources so I already have lost track of what colors are what other than a few pure white chicks.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll be patient and not do harm by messing with them.

You might message Chicken Danz. She has lots of different breeds, and if she doesn't have what you want, she might know someone who does. She is over around Waverly. She is on this thread so if you look back a couple of posts, you will find her.
