My BO broody now has 6 eggs that she is setting on. She is in the coop with her friends, but she chose to nest in the corner of the coop under the feeding table rather than in a nest box, so I'm inclined to let her stay there. It is a pretty safe spot. I have some concerns about letting her hatch the chicks in the coop with the other hens, but chickens have been doing just that for centuries. I hate to isolate her from the others for 3 weeks (well 2 1/2 weeks, now), but I want the babies to be safe.

So, here I am obsessing about hatching eggs again. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, letting a hen hatch eggs with others around?

The other 6 eggs are in the incubator, and I'm hoping to sneak those under her after hers hatch.

Am I just OCD, or does everyone worry about hatching eggs?

He is doing ok...getting tired of being in the hospital...we are hoping for the best..i am..let me talk it over with rooster and we will let u know by this afternoon.. thank u

Sharol, I let mine hatch with others around all the time. I've never had an issue with other birds messing with the babies - the moms are pretty protective. Even the ones that are normally docile. The other night, my Muscovy drakes got all excited and started fighting. If you've never seen muscovies, the drakes are HUGE - probably in the neighborhood of 15-20lb each. Meanwhile, I have 3 bantam hens raising a chick each - a Sultan and two silchins that each weigh 3-4lb. Those mamas were furious with the drakes and started attacking them, screeching and jumping at them with their claws extended. I will say the drakes paid them no heed, but it goes to show what an angry mama hen is capable of - none of these hens would normally consider challenging one of the drakes.

My preference is to segregate the broody hen so that the other hens don't add their eggs to her nest. But - I try to do it in the coop if possible so that she isn't alone. I have a couple of little coop/runs that I can just place over the hen where she is sitting, then put a chick feeder and waterer at the other end. That usually works pretty well.

My Independence Day was just another day - did chores, hung out and enjoyed it. We had a nice meal, then DH and DS set off some "pretties" in the driveway while I sat in a lawn chair and watched them having fun.

While feeding I looked up and saw two turkey poults on the wrong side of my chicken yard fence. Only thing is, they weren't MY poults - they were wild turkey poults! I guess they were drawn in by the sound of my turkeys. They hung there, just feet away from me while I fed and watered and then wandered away. Way cool.

All sheep accounted for this morning. Its a good morning.

Well I hope everybody Is having a good holiday. For the first time in about 8 years I took vacation and am not going anywhere.
I race lawn mowers on the national circuit. So usually I end up driving all over the country when I take vacation days. Where I work we only get 2 weeks a year so usually I take Friday off then we leave Thursday night and usually get back late Sunday. Usually I'm more worn out from vacationing than from work!
So the only thing we had planned was a short trip to Danz to get some birds, but that got detailed by my step father ending up in the hospital. At one point the doctor was talking a few hours if things did not get better quick. But I just found out he is going home today. He is a tough, mean old man so I guess he's gonna stick around awhile longer.

I'm glad to hear he's doing better, that was probably scary. I know someone else who does "tractor" pulls, which really is done with souped up lawn mowers. He & his brother do it together, so they have fun with it. I think they do some traveling around with that too.

We didn't do all that much yesterday for the holiday, it was a quiet day for the most part. We had enough noise from the neighbors around us with kids shooting off firecrackers. My GPs were in hiding all day yesterday & didn't come out till late at night, they hate fireworks. We did get the tin put on the roof for the goat shelter & now need to get siding for it. We have some OSB to return that we didn't use, some nails that were extra, & some hangers for the roof supports, so that will help defray the cost for the siding a little. The goats have already been using their shelter, so I'm sure they'll be glad to have a roof now when & if it rains again & this winter. We made it big enough so that if I decide to get a couple of lambs next spring there will be room for them in there too. I wanted some this year, but it was kind of past lambing season by the time I decided I wanted some, so I'll just wait till next spring.

I put my expensive Cream Legbar eggs in the hatcher this morning, so wish me luck that I get a good hatch & some nice babies. These will be from a totally different blood line, so that will be good too. I have one more hatch for someone coming up the 15th & then I'm done incubating & hatching for this year. I'm ready for a break from it. Then I just have to grow out what I have hatched already that are mine.
