Consolidated Kansas

Hope everyone had a good 4th. Took a few days off to clean the house and hang new window treatments. I'm not a clean freak by any means but since my DH does not clean much and I do want to have a clean house, I end up doing most of the cleaning. I only do the major cleaning when I'm expecting company though. The previous owners had gazillion cats in the house and I constantly smell the cats even after they have moved for the better of almost a year now. I think some of their senior cats had bladder issue. I'm searching online like an OCD person to get rid of the smell. My sensitive nose just can't stand it.

I also had the security guy came to install security. My house was broken into 10 yrs ago and i have had security put in the house since.

Rooster, glad your SD is doing well. You will love Danz's ducks. I have 6 of them and they are fun to watch. Wish I have more room to get a few more from her because I love duck eggs.

My sister and her sons are visiting in a month. I'm quite excited because I haven't seem them for over 3 years. My kids will have a blast playing with their cousins.

Now I need to get the house really clean and pictures back on the walls. I have not put them back on the walls since we moved into this house. Told ya I will do the major cleaning when I'm expecting company. LOL.

Enjoy the weekend everyone and oh, the heat is coming back but only in the 90s though. I still love winter the most.

I think the hardest smell to get rid of is cat spray. In a house we rented to a young woman, we had to replace the wood piece under the door and paint the cement floor (it was on a slab) with Kilz to get rid of the smell.

If it isn't that serious, Nature's Miracle works well on urine odors. Spray it on and let it sit for a while and then clean it off. That is assuming you can find the source of the problem, of course. Good luck with it. If it got into sub floor the cost can be considerable to get rid of it.

I was actually thinking about your setup when I posted that question.

I don't think I'll have any problems with other chickens laying in her nest since no one else uses that spot on the floor to lay. I'm leaning toward wait and see. If they can get along with the other adults in there, it will be easier than trying to integrate the ones I keep later.
Sharol, I let mine hatch with others around all the time. I've never had an issue with other birds messing with the babies - the moms are pretty protective. Even the ones that are normally docile. The other night, my Muscovy drakes got all excited and started fighting. If you've never seen muscovies, the drakes are HUGE - probably in the neighborhood of 15-20lb each. Meanwhile, I have 3 bantam hens raising a chick each - a Sultan and two silchins that each weigh 3-4lb. Those mamas were furious with the drakes and started attacking them, screeching and jumping at them with their claws extended. I will say the drakes paid them no heed, but it goes to show what an angry mama hen is capable of - none of these hens would normally consider challenging one of the drakes.

My preference is to segregate the broody hen so that the other hens don't add their eggs to her nest. But - I try to do it in the coop if possible so that she isn't alone. I have a couple of little coop/runs that I can just place over the hen where she is sitting, then put a chick feeder and waterer at the other end. That usually works pretty well.

Tweety, I had an issue a couple of years ago where our cat started peeing in the house. We could smell it but couldn't find the source. I bought some stuff on Amazon that is supposed to be AWESOME for eliminating the odor of cat urine. However while I was waiting for it to arrive, I found where he was peeing, was able to dispose of the fabric (a pile of rags) and wash down the cement floor of the basement so that I couldn't smell it any more. Then I moved the cat litter box to that spot and the problem was solved. So, by the time the stuff arrived, I didn't need it any more. I still have the unopened box if you're interested. I would sell it for half what I paid for it so it would be really cheap to you

Sharol, it might not hurt to mark the eggs anyway. What I've always found is that once one hen lays in a spot, the others decide its a great idea and join her. The theory is that a nest with eggs in it is the "safest" place for a hen to also lay her eggs. So, upon seeing a nest with eggs in it, the other hens may decide to add to it so that their own offspring have the greatest chance of survival.

I had an issue with a cat recently - male cat - that peed and completely soaked the carpet.... I searched online like a crazy person too and decided to go with this website I found because I had nothing to lose since I had everything on hand already - I will tell you... it worked.. I only did one treatment and within 2 or 3 days, ALL odor was gone from the room.. I've not had to retreat. You have nothing to lose and I promise you'll be amazed - just don't skip or alter any of the directions..

Hechicken I am sure Sharol can probably keep these eggs straight. They are all Maran eggs but it is a good idea to mark eggs like you said. I have done that before. But I always mark at least both sides with a large mark. Those girls are notorious for moving an egg just so to hide a mark!

What a day I have had. I have a little money and a lot less birds. I did well with it other than all the chasing and catching and of course worrying and upsetting about them getting sick from being stressed. I sold all my red stars and productions reds, all the guinea keets I had, a few adult guineas, all the blue copper marans, several pullets from here and there that were mixed, a few random other hens, and 5 of my goobie goose babies. I had to cry later about my geese. I really took a financial hit on them but I let them go.. Tomorrow the black coppers go, then Sunday the Swedish Flower hens and the cream legbars go. I also delivered 4 cockerels to Eileen M so she could use them in her breeding program. 2 of them Swedish Flowers and 2 of them Reece barred rocks. Rooster and company will come get the lemons cuckoos soon.
So the numbers have dropped a bunch.
I have decided I think to keep my white rocks hens and New Hamp roos for the time being. I still want to breed some of my own red stars to sell. DH was actually the one that convinced me to keep them. He has had several people at work express interest in buying some when I start breeding. I may actually have a pen to confine them to soon. But of course if they cost too much to feed they will have to go too.
One buyer who nearly cleaned me out also called a guy looking for red golden pheasant before he left and left a message telling him I had some for sale. Hate to sell them but that's a few less birds to feed as well.
I got enough money today to buy another load of feed this month when I need it. Surely in the next few days the amount will go down.
I still need to move 100+ ducks and my blue slate turkeys.
After this weekend I will access what I have in chicks to sell. I have a ton of them. I just couldn't deal with selling chicks and adult birds at the same time. It may be a bit harder to sell them with so much of the breeding stock gone.
I still have my brahmas, bredas, some of the Orpingtons, a few sussex, 4 barred rocks, and one trio or cochins to breed with. If I can just stick to those chickens and the red star breeding program I might be able to pull it off. The other turkeys, peafowl, and the rest of my geese are another matter. I am sure I will have to cut some more but for now I need to figure out how much feed I am going to use and how much money I can make selling offspring of these.
Frizzled there won't be much for Rooster to see when he gets here.
The "bird zoo" is getting thin.
The official meaning of Danzsizing changed a bit today!!!

Ahhhh, yes... the cat pee smell is awful and it doesn't help that I've a very sensitive nose. I painted the entire basement with kilz and will be replacing a piece of wood slab under the basement door from the garage this weekend. Then all upstairs wood floor had been refinished with several layers of oil based polyurethane (sp?) so smell is minimal. The wost place is the so called plant room. No need black light and I can see the evidence. In all honesty, the smell is probably not that bad. I do have an unusually sensitive nose and I'm always the one (and only one in the house) complaining about it.

Hechicken, if none of the tricks I try works, I'll pm you on the product you got from Amazon.

Sunflowerparrot, I have come across similar recipe and will be trying it soon. Thanks for the link. Hopefully it works.

Rooster and Sharol, I'm definitely trying my very best to lower the cost and the area that's affected is tiled but I'm sure the toe kicks of the cabinets will need to be replaced or I can refinish them using the same oil based polyp stuff as we did with the wood floors.

If it is not because of the location of this house and land, inmay not even buy it. But I know very well going into it that it is something I need to deal with and intend to win. It is woman vs cat smell!

Danz, I can't imagine you danzsizing so much so fast. Hopefully you will be able too keep some of the ones you want.

There are some issues going on with my family right now. I'm not sure how this impacts me and the chickens yet. I'll know soon enough.
