Lizzy this morning when someone came to get birds the dogs ran to the gate and so did my sabastopol young geese. I don't know if they were there to greet or to say "Hey! There is a stranger here."
It was kind of comical. I guess I now have watch geese!

We went out earlier & worked on getting the siding on the goat shelter, but didn't quite get it done yet before we had to stop so my DH could go get ready for work. That's one of the pitfalls of working 2nd shift is you get started on something & then have to stop in the middle to go to work. We have about 3 or 4 more pieces of siding to put on & then we need to go buy some 1x2s to put on to trim the corners & a couple other places. The building isn't perfectly square because it's made of pallets, so the trim will cover corners that don't exactly meet up. The goats don't care, all they care about is they have somewhere to get in out of the weather.

I went out last night when the dogs were barking wildly & saw that they had caught both a possum & a big rat & had them in the front yard. The possum was bigger than the one the other day. I'm glad they're getting them instead of them getting my chickens. I had to leave the main coop door open last night because it was still hot late at night. The possum must have noticed the door open, but at least the run door was shut this time & the dogs were on watch.

These are the 2 chicks that hatched 1 1/2 weeks ago. they are getting quite feisty. It never ceases to amaze me how fast they grow and produce feathers.

Took our birds to be checked for the fair today---UGH--we lost two due to the heat today and we have two more in the house with us cooling off. WHY would they set up a chicken check for 4 pm on a 100 degree day!?!?!?! The kids were all crying. Our oldest climbed into the bathtub to cool them off. Does anyone know how long it takes them to recover from heat stroke? They are alive, but not active at all. They seem to be sleeping peacefully--so are they past the "danger zone"?

ChickieWickies you need to watch them for several days. They will be more susceptible to getting over heated and die now. If you can, keep them inside for a few days and let them get back on their feet. I am so sorry for your kids. This time of year I have had more than one person want to buy emergency chickens because the ones the kids raised died in the heat. Even though that is against the rules.
I agree a 4 PM check in time is a bit absurd regardless of the weather that day. This time of year that is the absolute hottest time of the day. I would think morning or after 6:00 pm would make much more sense.
I cool mine off in the sink with barely warm water and when it gets dirty or seems to warm up I dump it and put more cool water in. I run it on their backs as well. Then I wrap them in a towel to dry them some and set them in a cool but not breezy area. It's time then to try to get some electrolites down them. If they are drinking give them some pedialite or equivelent mixed in cool water. If they aren't drinking I use a dropper and drop it in their beak so they swallow it. Another good practice is to give them some vitamin E. Their brain has been depraved of oxygen due to heavy panting so it can cause some brain damage. I have had some recover wonderfully and some that were basically brain dead after getting over heated.
This heat really stinks. I spent 3/4s of my day trying to run water to cool birds and still feel they just aren't staying cool enough.
Even the babies in the brooder house are suffering.

We just lost one in the house. She gave a final flap and was gone. She belonged to our 9 year old. We thought she was doing better, but then she was gone. We have others for the fair, but he LOVED Emily.

We had 2 babies born on July 1. If we got him more babies SOON would the mommas take them too or not? He loves his EEs so much.

Oh, and will Gatorade work? Should I water it down?

Chickiewickies, so sorry you lost birds to the heat. This just sucks, especially it was your 9 yr old's bird!

Well, my daughter's camp has a family type gathering at the east All Star Adventure from 5:30 to 7:30 this evening. It was just absolutely ridiculously hot! Both my kids had red faces and were completely soaked. The concrete floors where the rides were like hot charcoal burning in fire. By the time we left, I was feeling exhausted and a bit dizzy.

I just saw it on the 10:00 news that high today in Wichita was 107F! Holy cow!!! That was hot. I'm sure the heat index was higher. But I think there is a small chance that we may get some rain tonight. Fingers crossed.

Tomorrow's forecast is ONLY 97F, a "whopping" 10F cooler than today (gasp!)

Chickiewickies ,that is so sad! So sorry for your kid too. Our high tomorrow is only supposed to be 88 , hate it when it gets so dangerously hot .

Yeah, that was the yellow one. They are growing like bad weeds in August (as my Grandpa used to say). They will be 2 weeks old on Thursday.
