Consolidated Kansas

This morning, I was trying to get everything outdoors done before it got hot. I needed to check on my garden and check for anything that needed to be harvested. I got my first zucchini this morning!!! Then, while I was working on harvesting some beans, I knelt over and heard what sounded like a squeaky whimper. I had gotten a different pair of boots (used western boots) the day before, so I figured it was just the boots squeaking. However, when I stepped away, I noticed the ground was shaking just a little right where the sound was coming from (and the sound didn't move when my boot did). The hoe was right next to me, so I grabbed it and carefully/cautiously started pulling some straw away from the spot. What I discovered looked suspiciously like a baby mouse. It crawled back into the nest, though, and I didn't get a good look at it. I left it alone and went about my work, simply glad that I had finally happened upon something harmless, rather than a snake. :) Then, a little farther down the road, a great big toad jumped out of the row of beans.

I got a little angry with myself for being so jumpy.

I guess I was just expecting to see the blue racer snake that my husband claims is living in the corn rows.

This morning my hubby saw a bull snake in the yard. He watched it, and would have let it go of it hadn't turned toward the chickens. We tried to care it away, but no luck. So he whacked it with a small board. Poor snake, but rhe chickies were kept safe.

I don't mean to question you, but are you sure that's a bull snake? It looks very different from the bull snakes that I've seen in northwest and north central kansas. The ones I have seen aren't so dark in color and, while they do have diamonds, their diamonds aren't quite so all-over, but are more contained to just their back (did that make any sense???) If it isn't a bull snake, I honestly have no idea what kind of snake it is, but it doesn't look like the bull snakes I've seen. Maybe it could just be the picture playing tricks on me too.

With bull snakes, you can often move them away from the yard by pushing them with a hoe or spraying them with cold water on a hot day (it sounds refreshing, but they really don't like it). I've been told that you can "weave" the snake's body between the tines of a pitchfork and carry it off that way, but that has never worked for us. Maybe we just get all of the non-cooperative snakes?!? :) Anyway, when we have shoo-ed snakes away in that way, very few of them have ever actually returned.

I don't know for sure it was a bull snake. But whatever it was, it would not go away. He tried to shoo it with the stick, but it would not be deterred. It kind of made me sad, because I don't like killing anything, especially anything not harmful. But I am protective of my chickies!! Next time I will try the hose!

Hmmm... I did some research on black snakes in Kansas. You might look up the western or black rat snake to see if it looks like the one you saw in your yard. If it does, it could be a good thing you killed because the info I found says that rat snakes commonly feed on eggs and small birds and are adept at climbing trees and have even been seen climbing power poles!

I am glad I am not having trouble with snakes so far. But I have seen big black rat snakes on my property so I keep my eye out for sure.

Well I visited ChickenDanz today and say all her lovely birds and my daughter was thrilled to see the peacocks and begged for a peachick. I may think about them for next year but am trying to hold off this year, as always chicken math sets in and I walked away with birds and eggs. But I saved back money and time so it didn't hurt in that department. I am setting some eggs tonight and I am so excited, I have been looking for lavender orpingtons and Swedish flower hens and finally got them and got a few lemon cuckoo too. Yay. Danz you have a lovely set up and wonderful home and I cant wait to visit again and next time I will bring more containers, there is no fighting it I will come home with more next time lol. My daughter is super happy with the turkey poult and the guineas are beautiful. I will need to snap pics and start posting. I am a happy camper. Thank you Danz

Wow, I have not been keeping up with this thread at all! How is everyone? Is anyone else going to the Johnson County Fair? I'm not taking my chickens but I'm going to go and hoping to be able to help out with the chickens. So excited!

I will be Tyre for 4-H sho2ing my birds and some art :) I love to help with the birds :3

Maybe we'll run into each other! I wasn't able to go last year and I was really upset. I can't wait to see all the beautiful chickens and hear the symphony of crows.

What chickens are you showing?

I kill the black snakes around here. They can be very aggressive, eat eggs and chicks. I wish they would just eat these nuclear mice we have. Nothing seems to kill them!!!
Busy busy day today but I hope it will be the end of bird selling for awhile other than chicks. Probably about Tuesday I'll start advertising chicks. I can't keep feeding them and I really need room so they have to go soon.
I got the ducks sold yesterday so hopefully the feed bill will start going down. I am down to just one barrel of feed though and that only lasts about 2 days.
Maidenwolf it was so good to see you again and I was happy to meet your beautiful daughter and your husband. I hope the birds are doing well. I can see you daughter is going to be a gentle soul like you.
I lost two peachicks yesterday. They were out of a very young pair. I haven't had time to watch to make sure they were eating so it's probably my fault. They were only a couple days old. I've got to get back to normal routine soon.
I've got to be in Topeka tomorrow even though I really need to be at home. Things come at the most inopportune times.
I am so ready for things to slow down and have some time to myself again.
Well I'd better get moving. I have things to get ready before we start butchering.
Maybe this evening I can crash early.
