Consolidated Kansas

OH Sharol that made me tear up..remembering less than a year ago having to have my dear pet euthanized to keep her from suffering more. My heart is with you today. It is so hard to say goodbye to a member of your family.

Hey, just signed up. I live in paradise, ks. Just started a flock of chickens. All kinds. Just stated getting eggs! I was wondering if it was a good idea to add chicks next year. This year we had some turkeys & they didn't make it. I think the older chickens took care of them if you know what I mean.

Hey, welcome to Consolidated Kansas. We have a great group here.

If you add chickens, grow them up to about the same size as your existing flock before integrating them. It worked ok for me a couple of years ago. This year I'm adding a couple of cockerels from my deceased Roo and several Marans that my broody hatched. I have a very limited number because of the coop situation, but if all the Marans are pullets (yeah, right) and survive, I will be 5 over the max number for my coop, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks. I don't have the space to raise another set to full growth. May just have to make due with what I've got & let nature takes it course. Kind of sad though, I wanted more Easter Eggers.

Today is the first day of the 2nd 3-day dosage of Baytril for my Khaki Campbell duck. The first 3 days of dosage made a difference in the size of the swollen spot on her foot (decreased in size by about 1/2), but it didn't completely go away. I am hoping that the 2nd set of 3 days will completely eradicate what is left of the infection.

In addition to the Baytril, I have been spraying the spot on her foot with Vetericyn once daily and wrapping it with vet wrap. The scab that was on there had been on there for a long time (~6 weeks) and hadn't changed. This morning, I decided to pick the scab off. It bled a bit when I did that, but I'm hoping that getting rid of that thick scab will help it drain and get rid of any leftover yuck. Opinions on whether or not that was the right thing to do???
Lizzy, hopefully the Baytril will work and she will fully recover. That reminds me to ask my vet when I take the dogs in for their annual shots this Saturday, see if they will sell me Baytril if and when I need it for the birds.

I hope you get more rain too! Just too bad we can't send you the rain we had.

Well I did manage to go get feed today & got half of it unloaded, but am leaving the other half for my DH to bring in when he gets here, I ran out of steam. It was really hot here today & it just sapped my energy completely.

It was thick yesterday and same today. Can hardly breath through the moisture. I am hoping humidity will go down since we haven't had rain for 5 or 6 days now!

Don't you mean she needs hens? I can not get my roosters to lay eggs.

It's a sad day here. The vet is coming out to euthanize our 16 year old Brittany/SH Pointer dog. He has hit a wall, and just doesn't have any quality of life left. He is my DH's best friend, and we have had him since he was 2 weeks old.

A photo from his youth (15 years ago).

Sleep well, Good Dog.

Oh Sharol, it is so heart breaking! Sending thoughts and prayers your way. RIP doggie!

Welcome! We have a group of people here. If you have any questions, ask away!

As for your turkeys, you may need to separate them from the chickens due to size. Add 1 or 2 chicks of the same size in the turkey chicks as tutor so the turkey chicks will learn to eat and drink. Once they are of similar size to the big chickens, you can try to integrate them.

Long day today, actually it has been a long week! I have a lot of issues that need to be dealt with but it seems like I'm spinning in the same spot, not getting any where. Apparently the weather is not cooperating. The humidity is just a killer. I try not to go out till around 7pm to avoid the heat. The birds were waiting for me at the gate! LOL

I hope everyone is fairing well in this heat and humidity. Take it easy. Don't over do it!

My little rooster (Apple Jack) got injured today. They where outside in their temporary cage, and we had to leave the house for less than 30 minutes. When we returned I heard them being quite loud out back and after awhile I went and checked. One other chick (I believe he is also a rooster) was chasing around Apple Jack and pecking his comb.

I seperated him and he is alone now. I am not sure what all to do for him now. I do have some Triple Antibiotic Ointment cream made with Bacitracin. Is this something that is ok to use on him?

I am attaching photos. I did not edit them any so you can see the true color. The injury does not appear to be to bad, but then again this is my first time with chickens. How will they do when I add him back in?

His eye also appears to be red around the edges.....

Welcome! I live close to Glen Elder so it is nice to see someone else in my area. My chickens haven't started laying yet and I am already wanting more Easter Eggers too.
