Consolidated Kansas

I have a buff orpington that is 26 weeks or so that's comb is looking a bit floppy. Everything else about her looks good. Is that something I should be concerned about? I'm doing DE in their feed (not much, just sprinkling it in), DE in their litter, and ACV in their water.

Also, going back to an old post, I'd asked for suggestions on how to monitor water usage in their summer waterer, a 4" PVC pipe with drinking cups. 22qZoo suggested a simple float and fishing line solution. I used a few fishing bobbers on the inside. Just a little piece of plastic on the outside, something the birds shouldn't be able to hurt. Here's the finished product and it works great!! Thanks for the suggestion, it's pretty straight-forward but I wasn't coming up with it.

I'm not in the process of building something freeze-proof, I don't think I can keep the PVC arm on this from freezing so I'm going with a heated bucket and supposedly drip free nipples... we'll see.

Josie, thanks for that link - I found it fascinating.

I wanted to let everyone know that Chicken Danz will be unavailable for a few days. Her dad died earlier this morning so she will be spending time with her family as they make the arrangements. Although she won't be online much, I'm sure she will appreciate your thoughts and prayers, as she suffers this second loss in only 18 months.

Thanks for letting us know. This has been a really difficult time for Danz. My thoughts will be with her.

I'm sorry to hear that. She's had a rough time of it.

Hi all, I've been gone on vacation for the last two weeks & we just got back last night about midnight. We flew to Venice, Italy & spent two days there & then got on a ship & sailed to Greece. We had wonderful weather the whole time we were out there, calm seas & sunshine most of the time. It was a lot warmer than we expected it to be this time of year & a lot of other people were surprised as well. It was beautiful over there, this was our first trip to Europe & it was interesting. We both came back sick with bad colds, so that was the downside of our trip, so we're trying to recover from that now. It was the pits flying with a cold all day yesterday, we were just miserable. When we would descend on one of the 3 planes back home our ears would just scream with pain & it wasn't fun with being sick anyway. We were really glad to be back home to our own bed last night. I was glad to see my birds & animals & I think they were glad to see me. Our little dogs have been really clingy since we got home & the GPs outside can't quit smiling at me, it's really cute. I did have a couple of losses while I was gone, kind of par for the course.

Danz, I was trying to catch up on reading, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts & prayers are coming your way to you & your family.

If she isn't sick and just has a toe that goes the wrong way could you make her a shoe? Something to stabilize the toe that flops around so she has support instead of it getting in the way? You can look up shoes for chicks on here when they are hatched with curly toes but you could make it out of something more permanent than cardboard?
That is such a good idea! I never would have though of that!! I really don't think it's broken or anything. Thank you!! :)

Said a prayer for her. Losses are hard, had one recently myself, in September. God is gracious; even bad things He works out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to his purpose.
