Consolidated Kansas

Ashncarson, I'm sorry but that is definitely a cockerel. The darker feathers on the wings are a giveaway. If you compare him to the one that is a hen, she will be a more uniform color all over. I wish we lived closer - I'd take him back in a heartbeat and trade you for a known pullet.

Hey 22qZoo, I got to thinking about how my comment might have sounded regarding the older part of Olathe being lower classed. I didn't mean I thought so. I meant in the eyes of the richer people like the doctors and lawyers etc that live in those new developments. I for one, am as low classed as they could possibly imagine. I just have a problem with people who have the opinion that they are better than everyone else, whom attach a social stigma toward those who aren't as wealthy.

Danz- I didn't take any offense if that's what you mean ? I really just meant that she (my sister) has a creepy tweeker for a neighbor . EVERYBODY would be better off if this guy was replaced by a rooster. I don't enjoy pretense either. If I remember right when I was a kid govt. cheese made the best grilled cheese sandwich . ;-)

I can't imagine any cheese made by the government being something I'd want to eat

Hi all. I'm kind of new to BYC. I haven't posted yet but have been lurking for a few months now. My husband and I just started our chicken experience about 6 weeks ago. We just moved to Augusta. We bought a house on 10 acres and thought it would be fun to have chickens. Needless to say we have become obsessed. We just moved them out of their box in the garage into their chicken coop on Tuesday and they seem to love all the space they have. Most of our flock are barred rock. We also have a few bantams. We are interested in owning a few frizzles or sizzles but we have been unable to find some. Anyways we are excited to be apart of the kansas group!

Welcome! Chickens are additive, especially little fuzzy butts.:) Tell us more about your chickens and coop. Any plan to expand? We do have a few near you and a couple of dedicated breeders. They may have what you want come Spring.

22qZoo, I understand what you meant. Been there and done that.

Well we started out getting 4 bantams and 16 barred rock. Then I went out of town for a couple days and when I came home we had 10 more. So we ended up with 4 bantams, 21 barred rock, two blue cochins, and 3 brahmas. Sadly the first night he got the second batch the water thing fell on one and killed it, so we have 29 birds total now. We bought them straight run so we are hoping to have 12 or 15 hens, hopefully. We built a 10' by 8' coop. The roof goes from 8' down to 6'. We just put them in there on Tuesday and they have a ton of space. We haven't quite got the nesting boxes in there yet, but those will be going in the next week or so. It took us longer because we decided to insulate it. The run is going to be about the same size, and they can go underneath the coop because it is about 3 feet off the ground. We plan on free ranging them so that's why they don't have a huge run. Hopefully that will work, if not, we can always expand. I am sure my husband will love that idea ha ha. After looking on BYC for a few ideas we decided to do the feeder out of PVC pipe. For the most part it has been greater, and the chickens learned rather quickly where the food was. We didn't put the bottom piece at a slope so the food isn't falling down as well as it should. My husband is going to work on that this next week or so as well. After much debate, we decided to put a laminate tile down on the floor so it made it easier to clean and we were hoping that the OSB wouldn't rot or something like that. We are amazed at how many personalities we have in the bunch, and how fast chicks grow. It is amazing. Luckily, my husband loves animals as much as I do, so we are both open to expanding. I think that we might end up putting another coop up right beside our other one and maybe connect them. I haven't told my husband yet, but that is what I would like to do ha ha. We also have a 10 month old baby and 4 German Shepherds so it is rather busy. This "quick" project has taken way more time than we originally anticipated. It also cost us twice as much as what we planned on, but that's okay. We wanted to have a pretty nice coop for them. We just moved to Augusta, and chickens were something we really wanted to have for quite awhile. Needless to say, once we found out we could have some, we jumped at the opportunity. I plan on posting pictures of our coop and everything as soon as we are done so I am hoping to be done soon. I am really wanting to get a couple frizzle hens because I absolutely love them, so hopefully I can find some come spring. :)
