I don't think it matters if it is packaged as goat or horse wormer - the only important factor is the active ingredient: Fenbendazole. (Panacur horse wormer also has the active ingredient Fenbendazole so could be used interchangeably.) When I was doing my research, Fenbendazole was one of the recommended treatments for capillary worms. I don't know for sure if he has those or not, but figured if he is a little down only a month after Ivermectin treatment, it is best to try something with a different active ingredient. And, since he is the only one I want to treat, it doesn't make sense to me to do something that goes in the water or feed and treat the whole flock. So, I think probably the paste is my best bet, since I can administer it just to him. I think I will follow the package directions and do the second treatment after 10 days, and hopefully that will knock out any that have hatched since the first treatment.

I know I was the one who originally suggested the Ivermectin in the water worm treatment but this time of year I don't favor the treatments that have to be administered via the water. If I use my gravity waterer, it freezes, but if I use a heated water bowl, the ducks splash it out and waste it. So - at this time of year I am looking for ways of administration that are more direct. I don't want to put a bird in a separate pen to try to dose via the water or feed, when the temps are going to be in the negatives during the time frame of the treatment.

I did the Ivermectin about a month ago during a period of days when the temp was staying above freezing even at night (I can barely remember what that is like now!) and I got lucky that by the time they needed the second dose 10 days later, it was still mild. I wanted to dose at a time of year when they weren't producing many eggs but it is also real iffy this time of year when you don't want the medicated water freezing. Sigh. At least with a tom turkey I don't have to worry about withdrawal on either eggs or meat, but its another reason not to treat the whole flock right now, since egg production is really good and I don't want to have to discard a couple dozen eggs a day.

OK, I got to thinking that I should make a small picture collage using one of Ethan's newborn pictures. The picture I posted earlier just didn't match any of his newborn pictures well enough to make a nice collage, so I took some pictures of him myself so I could make a collage. What do you guys think?
I forgot to mention that the picture on the left is his newborn picture, taken by Emily Rae Photography out of Colby KS. The picture on the right is the one I took this morning.

Cute!!!

lizzy those pics are so cute!

I took a few pics of some of my new chicks, a lot of them are under the sweeter heater & ecoglows but I caught a few out eating.

Peeking out from under the sweeter heater

And last my kitty Coco I got to bring in the house finally to join the other two, she was sitting on my lap enjoying herself.

I went out & took a walk around to all of the pens while I still can get there before the snow hits & checked on all the birds. I moved two more little Cream Legbar pullets & a cockerel into the breeder coop so the one lone pullet in there wouldn't be so lonely any more. That little cockerel isn't even half grown & when I put him in there he did a little dance for the oldest pullet. I had to laugh because he's such a little thing I wouldn't have expected it of him. I'm still evaluating the other cockerels to decide which will be backup. I'm still waiting for the splash Barnevelder pullets to get big enough to go in with my rooster, he sure would like some girls in there, but they're still too small yet.

I hope everybody is ready for this storm to hit tonight & tomorrow, it's not going to be fun, stay warm & be careful everyone!

I wish I were closer to you. I'd love to let you snuggle with him. :) Somehow, I can't imagine you being a burden when you visit. It sounds to me like you're always busy doing something productive, and I can only imagine that you'd be super helpful when you visit your grandkids.

Yes, time does fly! Way too fast!

Lizzy, I honestly broke out laughing at that second picture. That is just precious!!! Yeah, well I would be a pain because I would sit on my butt and play with the baby and do nothing else!
What a busy day. I got all the birds fed and watered this morning and early afternoon. I made sure all of them had plenty to get by. Then I went to the hospital for some tests. Then went to the grocery store. I actually didn't buy much. It was very crowded and that makes me really uptight. I talked to a couple in the hospital that said they had gone to Walmart in Ottawa before coming to town to the doctor. They said it was worse than Christmas. The parking lot was full, the store was full and the shelves were getting empty. Everyone is totally freaking out about this storm. I figure with all the hype we'll either get a good 15 inches of snow or just a light dusting. I know they were making a killing at the grocery store and there were lots of empty spaces on the shelves.
I of course got a load of feed today and when I got home I had to shovel it off. I was hoping DH would do that but he was trying to put a couple pieces of tin on one pen for a roof. I don't know if he got it done or not. I just knew I had to get that feed shoveled off and closed up out of the weather before the storm comes in.
Heather, I just assume if one bird has worms all the others with him will as well. I forgot your ducks run with the other birds. I can't imagine maintaining just one water bowl. It would be nice!
I went out and caught my biggest blue English orp roo and brought him in for a conjugal visit with my lady orp. I just put him in the room with her and shut the door behind me. Needless to say I have a really big mess to clean up. He was pretty freaked out so I don't know if he got her bred or not. I went back out to finish feeding and just left them for awhile. At least it did get her off the eggs. The girls are having cat food and frozen peas for dinner tonight. They are getting very spoiled. I think the big blue girl is well enough to go back out but she's so used to be the house temperature, I figured I'd better wait until we get passed this storm.
I thought about moving the English to a different pen today but I'm just worried about how this weather is going to pan out. Another week isn't going to kill me as far as having them separated for breeding.

*Sigh* forecast is making me sad---so ready for warmer weather to start some REAL chick hatching--anybody got any exciting "projects" brewing? Who was working on the Aloha project--i havent seen updates on that lately? I am excited about a new pairing i have for the Mille frizzled pattern this year--fingers crossed.

Anyone have any experience with peacock pheasants? I'm intrigued(yes such a bird nerd)

Stay warm everyone.

Aw Frizzled you are singing my song!!! I so want Peacock pheasants. I've been studying them. Do you know they only hatch 2 chicks a year usually? That's insane. It's no wonder they are endangered. I have found one male available but no females yet. They are at the very top of my I want list. And also at the top of my I can't afford list too.
It was Deerfield Acres who was working on the Aloha project. I think HEChicken has some of her birds and might be working on them a little as well. Deerfield has had some life changes and hasn't posted in forever. Once in a while I hear from her but not often.
My projects are all centered on Orpingtons and Brahmas. I am trying to switch to English orpingtons now that I am just building up some decent stock on exhibition Americans.
I plan to breed Mauve's given around the next 6 months to a year. I have to get my LF chocolates first.

Apparently they are quite the "diggers" too. But so on my list in 5 years when i get my bigger acreage.

Mauves? Your brave--the single dose/double dose of chocolate genetics was enough to make my eyes cross.

Since we're playing --LOOK AT THAT---Vulturines!!! Kinda scary looking but i would definitely be looking!!!! Would probably serve as good watch-birds too as i bet a lot of people would think 2x about getting out of the car if that came around the corner. HA!

I hope the Aloha's are doing well--i tend to gravitate to the spotted birds. All the Swedish are now sold to make room for other breeds--but yeah think they will be back on that 5 year plan too.

I love the look of those Vulturines, they're so pretty! They're big though, you would have to have a huge pen for those things!

I'm getting into the Orps too, I blame Danz for that, that's my story & I'm sticking to it. That's OK Danz, we're enablers. I already have lavenders & lemon cuckoos & will be getting partridge this spring as well. I'm also trying to get my blue laced Barnevelders going, they're not as hardy as other breeds, so it's been kind of struggle so far. I have more eggs due the 8th though of those. I also after two years am going to have all lavender Ameraucanas, I had to work up to that point with those. I will be selling off my Salmon Faverolles this spring to make room for the partridge Orps. So Frizzled what breeds are you raising now?
