Consolidated Kansas

Yeah, I noticed it is blowing from the east as well so I'm glad I put the glass in my storm windows. If I hadn't, a ton of snow would have blown in by now. As it is, my pop door faces east so a little has blown in that way, but the chunnel protects it for the most part so it isn't a lot that blew in that way. I took some BOSS down first thing to keep them busy, and I'll take them another cup around mid-day. They normally only get one cup a day to encourage them to turn over the bedding but since most of them are staying in today, I'll take things down periodically throughout the day to keep them busy and out of trouble.

Ash, I meant to say, I'm glad you are enjoying your NH hen. I really like mine - they are calm, sensible birds who really add a splash of color to the flock. I'm looking forward to growing out a few more of them this year. I wound up with none last year as a buyer came up from out of state and bought every chick I had left at the end of the season. I had really planned to keep a few of them but figured I'd let him take them and that would give me a chance to hatch some more this year.

That's good for you since it shows you have great birds!

I also meant to add, as much as I love her, I am kind of glad I only have 1 like her! I have 2 chickens that I can't hardly tell apart and it bugs me that I can't call them by name and keep better track of them! so this way I know for sure who each one is when they all look different!

Initially my flock consisted of a bunch of birds that every one looked different. I don't usually name them but I still knew who was who. Then I started focusing on BR and NH's and now have a bunch that all look alike. One thing I am doing to distinguish them is banding the left leg of all birds hatched in a single year, with the same color. That way when they're all the same size, I will still be able to look at them and know which are the older hens. I also have several groups where I have two that look too similar. For example, I have a pair of Wheaten Ameraucanas and a trio of Bourbon Red turkeys and the hens are pretty much identical. In that case, I simply band the leg of one of them and there is no confusion. They become (in my mind) "banded" and "non-banded" and that way I can always tell them apart.

I got up during the night some time & saw that it had snowed here, it's still snowing but it's very small stuff right now. We're in the band that is forecasting a total of 5-7 inches. The wind hasn't kicked up here yet, I guess it's supposed to do that at some point today. My DH just said he looked it up & we have 4 inches right now. I'm glad we're not in the 11 inch range, with our driveway the way it is so hilly 5-7 inches is plenty for us to have to deal with, especially if it drifts over part of it.

I guess everybody & their brother were out buying groceries yesterday because by the time my DH got there last night after work a lot was picked over or gone. I added a couple things to his list & one of them was bagels because I eat a half of one with my egg for breakfast & he said the only ones left were onion so that's what I got. He managed to forget one thing on the list so I guess we'll be living without that. I'm going to make a big pot of chili today so we'll be eating that for a couple of days.

I guess the chickens will have to be happy staying in today, they don't like to come out in the snow anyway. Usually they're pushing on the run door to get out but I looked out & they weren't even in front of the door. I'll have to ask my DH to give them some BOSS today too so they have something to scratch around for.

We have been using a slightly different system to identify our birds. We use colored tie straps on the left leg to id where the bird came from and use the international color code for the year on the right leg.~~

~~Queen Color Codes: Years Ending in 1 or 6: White. Years Ending in 2 or 7: Yellow. Years Ending in 3 or 8: Red. Years Ending in 4 or 9: Green. Years Ending in 5 or 0: Blue

So the peafowl we bought from Danz have a blue leg band on their left leg and red bands on their right leg since they were hatched in a year ending on a three.

I used tie straps for a while but they would break off. I now have metal bands but guess who hasn't gotten their birds banded? The only ones I do have banded are the geese and a couple of those lost their bands. So the grand plan is to ban my breeders only but then I can't seem to help but keep babies for breeders. Do you think I'll ever get my act together? I'm not counting on it.
I've got cabin fever already!! This is going to be a bad week. I just dug out some mist fountain things to try to put some moisture in the air. Our heat system is supposed to be efficient enough it actually adds humidity but this year it's just run too much and there is none. I was trying to get bedding in the laundry and they kept shocking me. I hate that.
I think I'm going to work on my old antique incubator some today. I should be cleaning but as usual it can wait.
