I'm about an hour from you outside of Waverly. Welcome to our group. Are you starting with chicks? Do you have a coop yet? What kind of chickens are you wanting to get? How many? Are you just planning for layers or do you want to produce some for meat as well. There's a wealth of information out here but sometimes we need a place to start. Also you will get some conflicting answers so in that case go with your gut. I had raised chickens a few decades ago but really realized I knew nothing until I decided to get back into them. I began by buying and reading a book called Success with Baby Chicks by Plamondon. It was a good starting point and didn't take that long to read. Then I researched breeds. That is where it really got confusing.
My direction has changed so many times when I found I liked different breeds and didn't care as much for some breeds.
I recommend asking us here any questions you have. We've got people with years of experience as well as newbies here.
Ask away and tell us more.

Michelleml if you want a bunch of different breeds that might be a good deal. It looks like shipping adds about $1 more per chick. Maybe you can find someone nearby who would split an order with you.

Those rainbow layers are nothing but a mixture of different breeds of layers & could be anything. If I were going to order chicks, which I'm not this year I would want to choose what breeds I get rather than let them choose for me, just my two cents on it. I had decided to hatch my own replacements this year instead of giving the hatcheries any business. I can treat them a lot better than the hatcheries do & they don't have to endure being shipped & the trauma from that either.

So I got the feeding and watering done with only one frozen hose. That whole mess just brings out my bad side!!!

I swear I will figure out a way to have a building with an underground water and electrical supply before next winter. I am supposed to enjoy my birds....not hate having to get out to care for them. I am not being a very good chicken mamma these days. Of course I am a bad mamma all the way around these days. I am sure if people met me for the first time right now they'd think I was a real be-atch. I NEED WARM SUNSHINE!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I don't have any chicks yet. We are looking to get about 40 to 50 chickens. We will probably get half Plymouth White Rock and half Buff Orpington. Butcher about 2/3 and then keep the rest for eggs.If things go well try a similar setup the following year. My friend has the land and I have the labor and crazy ideas. He already has one good size coop that we are going to remodel, then I am also going to make a chicken tractor. My idea is to rotate half the chickens week to week from the coop to chicken tractor.

I have been reading on here and checking out all the great pictures on here have given me a lot of ideas so some more research and I think I will do be ready to get some chickens in a month or so.

Well good luck with your chicken endeavor, we're all enablers here so we can help you want more & more. I started out wanting only 6 layers, for some eggs for us. That didn't last long before that 6 grew to a bunch more layers & then on to add different breeds that I now hatch. I kept adding more pens & more coops.

Danz, I think we all need some sun, I know I'm getting really grouchy myself from this stupid cold nasty weather. We all will be rejoicing when the warmer weather gets here & finally some sun & fresh air.

I got their rainbow layers last year and they're really pretty and unique in color! I've enjoyed them too - very sweet birds and good layers too.. hardy as well since they did great over the summer and doing well in this horrible cold. That's a good deal; I might jump on that myself.

I have found i can keep multiple roosters that have been raised together in one coop, but once i separate them they cannot come back together as a peaceful group.
