Holy molly, is there an end to this cold weather? Bet you'll never hear this from me, right? I think for a change, I'd like to have some warmer weather. Above freezing will be nice.

LOL no that doesn't sound like you at all!
I've so busy at work my husband now becomes the primary care taker of the birds. I only go out there to clean tgeir coop and give them fresh water. I miss them a lot! Egg laying has picked up from 3 a day to 9 a day. We've had 11 the other day but of course this cold weather reduced it to 8 or 9. No complain here. I've also started them back on the FF. They definitely go gaga over it according to my DH.
Hopefully work will slow down for you soon after tax season. I miss your input.
Kicknchicken - welcome to our board. You are close to Danz so might want to check out her orps. Tons on very knowledgeable people here. We also love pictures so when you get the fuzzy butts, don't hesitate to post away.

With some casualties from the weather and the dogs (when they first arrived) plus some stopped laying due to old age, I think I need to hatch some replacements. Hoping to maybe do so in March when it gets a bit warmer. Our primary goal is eggs then meat. I'm not into different breeds.... yet. Maybe in the future I'll narrow it down to a few breeds I want.

Anyone watching the Sochi Olympics? I used to watch the summer and winter Olympics but now, not so much. I do, however, pay attention to the Shockers basketball. They are doing awesome!

Stay warm everyone. Lets hope for some warmer weather and sunshine.
I used to watch the Olympics now and then. I always said there are two kinds of people. Spectators and participators. I would have to be classed as a participator. I never enjoyed watching sports. I was married to a coach in my first marriage and that really burnt me out on sports too. But I would much rather play the games than watch them. I certainly have never been coordinated and talented though. I just don't sit still well. I have to at least keep my hands busy when I am sitting. Or now that I am older it's pretty easy to keep my eyelids busy going shut while I am sitting.
Josie,
Maybe Lucy knew that was for giving her a bath and she was showing you she didn't want a part of it.

I used to get so angry. When I'd get packages the mail man would set them on the front porch and lay the mail in a rubberband on top of the package. The packages would disappear if they were small and the mail would be blowing all over the county. I now have a big storage box out by the mailbox for packages to go into. The dogs have matured and don't tend to chew up much anymore but it's comforting to know where it all is.
I've rarely had the roosters fight but you are all right. Adding a stranger into the group causes some real battles. I need to make a pen strictly for back up breeding roosters and I think I am going to put pinless peepers on them when I do just to try to circumvent any possible fighting.
As for the Tom's they do fight like crazy during breeding season. I noticed my bourbon Tom displaying yesterday a lot and he sure hasn't been. Then I noticed that one of the midget hens has the feathers chewed off her neck obviously from being bred. Whether the weather refuses to cooperate, the birds say it is time for spring to begin. One of my two Midget Toms had his snood completely ripped off by another Tom. It happened before I picked my breeders but I kept him because he was one of two with the best overall shape. My two midget Toms coexist without a lot of fighting cause they've always been together, but during mating season they don't get along as well. Still if I let them out they are up fighting with the bourbon red Tom at the fence.

Oh, that reminds me - my silkie hen finally went broody. She's been laying for weeks and at a decent rate too - about 6 eggs a week. I figured it wouldn't be long until she brooded and sure enough, she started yesterday. Fortunately I have a few eggs in the incubator that are due to hatch next Friday. I wasn't really looking forward to raising chicks so now I can give them to her and put off raising them myself until the next batch.

My incubator is slowly getting fuller. I'm afraid a ton of eggs will be tossed though due to the cold weather. I can't always tell if they have gotten too cold or not. I have some due tomorrow that I haven't candled. I guess we'll see what pops out. Then some turkey eggs the next day. I'm really not wanting to deal with many chicks yet. I have to get the ones in the brooder house put into pens yet, and I don't want to move them out to the cold when they are conditioned to warmer temps of the brooder house. If it would warm up and the snow would melt I might actually get some birds moved here and there. Of course once the snow melts it is going to be a muddy mess out there.
I still need to get some breeding groups separated for sure. I need to get some concept houses in mind I can build for quick shelter in the existing pens. I have a few small groups that won't need as much space.

Welcome kicknchicken! My SLW freebee rooster started crowing @ 17 weeks. He was supper @ 17 1/2 weeks! I knew he was roo at a week old just from his attitude, he was really a punk and mean to the girls. I didn't name him and since I was raised in the country-didn't have too many qualms about harvesting him.

I have quite a few roosters with all of the ones I have for breeding & the laying flock rooster. They have crowing contests & they all have a different crow so it's fun to listen to them. I have that one that has never quite gotten it right & it sounds more like woo hoo, he's my lavender Orp rooster. I just laugh at him all the time.

I've never had more than one tom turkey at a time so I never had the fighting issue. I sure have had fighting roosters though.

Well wish us luck getting our car out of this driveway, it's still a mess. We had hopes of it getting warm enough to melt some today but there is no sun & it's only 30 degrees right now, so much for that idea.

So, I am not against roosters if they are at my house. The problem is I live in the city and all the chickens will be raised at my friends house in the country (about 4 miles away). I will be doing plenty of work raising/maintaining the chickens but I am not sure he wants crowing roosters. We still need to chat some more about the details.

Stopped into Tractor Supply today, chick days in couple weeks they say........hmmmm am I ready? Have I decided what to pick up ? Ohhhh yea, my BR has given me 3 so far!

Who has any in the 2-3 month range? I have no problem traveling some.
Still need to make contact w source local, but they are just hatching at end of month.

Let me know !

Interested in wels, rir......or? Let me know what you might have.

Thank you !

Chickenrookie I may have a few buff orps in that age range. I assume you are wanting pullets? I need to wait until the weather breaks and I start moving birds to breeding pens to see what I have and don't have. I don't have RIR or wellies though.

My geese have started to lay. I only have two pair but I think they are both laying. There was one yesterday and the one today was in another nest. The one yesterday was frozen and cracked. The one today wasn't cracked, but it was smaller in diameter than the one yesterday. I think the smaller one was a first egg, because one goose isn't but 10 months old. If it was warmer I would let them hatch them, but usually their first few eggs aren't fertile.
