Consolidated Kansas

I am ready for the warmer days, not looking forward to the mud we will have then. But I am so ready for the snow to go.

On another note, Ideal Hatchery had Silkies on sale for 1.30 each, so now I am brooding in the house during winter. They hatched Wed and were delivered on Friday Morning. So they were on the road during the coldest days last week. None died in transit.

Congrats on your babies! Welcome to the brooding chicks in your house club! I still have two brooders in here, one with the heritage RIR chicks in it & the other has all of the Marans, Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, & now Barnevelder chicks in it. I have more due the 14th & then my brooder will be overflowing. I'm hoping to be able to move these RIR chicks to the garage soon, but we'll see with the weather. Yes I have felt like I'm a little crazy for hatching in the winter, but at least I will get an earlier start on layers. I have not hatched any of my breeder's eggs as of yet, not that many of them are laying at this point with the cold, dreary days.

It's snowing here again, ugh. I'm so tired of this stuff I could scream. It would be nice if you could just look out at it & say how pretty it is & not ever have to go out there. Unfortunately that isn't the case.

That is a fantastic picture; you're amazing!

I got two eggs today.

Thank you! Congrats on the eggs!

Trish I always thought I could do that when I retired. Boy was I wrong. I keep thinking some day that will happen but things would have to change a lot. Are you heading South today? My prayers are with you and your family.
I have two more baby chicks, three more turkey poults and 2 more pipped chicken eggs in the incubator this morning. I had two eggs that didn't make it. They developed part way but then apparently died. I think that should be the end of the ones that went through the incubator fan failure. I kind of lost track.
We got more snow during the night as well. When is it ever going to end?
Lizzy that is an amazing picture. I think you should enter that in a photo contest somewhere.
Surprisingly I had a few extra eggs yesterday. I had two in the cochin pen who haven't been laying. Since there are only 2 girls in there that's not bad. But the ones that have been laying were on strike yesterday. I swear this weather is really messing up the laying. I haven't had a duck egg in like 2 weeks. Normally although they aren't fertile this time of year I still get a couple year round.
Taz that's amazing the chicks arrived all alive.
I did once again get my chicks postponed but some may be shipped on Wednesday dependent on the forecast then. At least the seller doesn't want them to die on the way either.

Taz, congrats on the silkies all arriving in good shape - this time of year that's pretty phenomenal.

Lizzy - fun picture!

We got several inches of new snow last night too - blech. Plus, the temp was in the single digits when I woke up though it is climbing faster than on some mornings. Last time I looked we were all the way up to 14. Amazingly, by Saturday it is supposed to be 62 - whoo-hoo! That should go a long way to melting some of this white stuff.

So I have an item advertised for sale on Craigslist, and you know how you end up with all those emails from spammers any time you list something? Well, this time I put in the ad that any email replies must include a phone number so I know its a real person. I haven't received any spam by email. Now I'm getting spam by text. Last night - after midnight (!), I got a message saying "Hello, my name is xxxx xxxxx and I am a dealer. Please reply and let me know your bottom dollar". Fortunately, I have my phone set on an automatic "do no disturb" so the arrival of texts is not accompanied by sound or screen lighting up between 10pm and 6:30am. Therefore, I did not get the text until I looked at my phone this morning. I tell you what, I would have been screaming mad if I'd been woken by that garbage. As it was, I replied with "You text me after midnight to low ball me? For you the price is double what I was asking". (I've heard of scams where it is actually an international number and you get charged a fortune just for replying but I looked up the number prior to replying and that wasn't the case here.) Grrr. People make me so mad!!!

It has been snowing here all day and is back to being frigidly cold here again. One more day before it is supposed to warm back up into a more normal temperature range! Hopefully, we can get some of this snow to melt! I was out doing chores this evening and stopped for a few minutes to spend time with my horses. I was just standing in the barn with them while they ate their hay when I noticed what looked like a piece of snowflake-shaped glitter on my horse's shoulder. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a perfectly formed snowflake! So pretty! So, I ran inside and got my camera and proceeded to take a bunch of pictures, hoping one would come out nicely. My horse didn't help much as he didn't want to stand still, preferring instead to try to eat/taste my camera. However, I did get one picture that came out nicely, so I thought I'd share it with you all!

On a more bird-related note, my birds don't seem to like this weather much. More specifically, they don't like all the white stuff... They haven't gone more than 10 feet from the coop since it snowed the first time, more than a week ago.

Ugh, I have a love hate with craigslist. I have stuff listed right now and I had a lady that lives two hours away text about a cage, wanted more pictures, dimensions, nine hundred other questions answered even though I posted a link to a website with all the info but couldn't get it up on her phone all to find out her next day off isn't until next Saturday.

My little trouble maker is in her bumper jumper in the laundry room doorway reaching into the laundry basket and pulling out clothes. She is so clever! Almost crawling, she does this half crawl with one leg bent at a 90 degree angle to keep her propped up, for some reason when she gets up on both knees she just flops down onto her belly still but she is close. It is terrifying!!! I am already vacuuming the floors every other day and she still finds wood chips from logs that we bring in for the wood stove. And of course DH just leaves big piles of crud from the wood on the floor!!! Argh!!!

Danz- Are your geese laying at all yet? Mine are all hovering over one girl, I need to get them split out into breeding pens this weekend. Must be getting close. So weird, the first year I got them the pair started laying the last week of January, last year I didn't see any eggs until March!

I really like to put a key word for a subject to reply by email in Craigslist adds. But a lot of people won't reply by email. If it doesn't have the keyword I just delete the email. If I have to include a number, I do it with some numbers and some spelled out numbers so a spamming computer won't pick it up. I'm to the point I rarely post anything any more just because I don't have time for people's games. Even with all the protection I can add I still get people who just want someone to talk to. They have no intent to buy anything...just want to talk. Grrrrr!
I really wonder what some people do with their lives when they have nothing to do but talk, text, or chat on facebook. I am sure I might look that way sometimes because I check in here on a regular basis but after my morning coffee it's just a quick break then back to my projects.
I've got to get around and head to town shortly. I have some prescriptions to pick up. I sure hope the roads are semi clear. I haven't been anywhere in a couple weeks. I did check my checking account balance this morning and it's obvious I've been spending too much time on line buying things. Time to tighten the belt again.
Lizzy, no I don't but I see them every now and then. If I see something I'll let you know.
