Consolidated Kansas

No heat in my coop, plenty of fresh air and my buff and barred rock have been doing just fine. I call them my "sturdy" hens.

Plenty of talk back and forth on heating coops and my goal was to raise some that could handle the cold. Oh yea, my first eggs have been this past week!

My cookie tin heater was all they got, until the bulb burned out. I decided I would just carry out water and they would drink when I brought it. They now are "talking" to me when I walk up as they have learned it means some kind of goodies!

Congratulations on the eggs! Even after a couple of years, I still get a little kick out of checking the nesting boxes and finding eggs.

I think all living beings should have access to water at all times. JMHO.

I agree. The effects of lack of water can be fairly rapid, too.

My dad is going stir crazy. He said last night he's out of his mind with boredom, and is thankful for the Olympics so he can see some new scenery. It's funny, but I very rarely get cabin fever. I like being at my house. I like vacations now and then, but rarely do I ever feel a real need to go somewhere else.

I am like you Cherwill as far as not needing to go anywhere, but I get cabin fever really bad. I need to be outside and have sunshine and warmth. I've been a nervous wreck, but because of the cold I don't have any energy to do anything either. This is a dangerous time for me because I eat out of anxious boredom. I also tend to spend too much time internet shopping. I checked my bank account yesterday and absolutely HAVE to stop spending. All those Christmas expenses came in and I bought a ton of other things including purchasing some expensive baby chicks that really added up in a hurry. The birds are eating tons because they can't scavenge for anything in the snow and ice.
I've got several projects started but no enthusiasm to work on them. I really need some warm weather and to be able to get out and work outside.

Chicken Danz:

You wouldn't happen to have any brahmas available? I'm trying to add to my brahma flocks this year. I'm open to all colors, some I would need more hens or pullets of. New colors I would need a rooster to go with them.

Thanks for your time.

I do have some. Send me a Pm and let me know what you are interested in.

Well we got back home about 11:30 last night after being in OKC yesterday. I have a new grandson, Rayce Blaine, 7 lbs. 14 oz & if I say so myself, of course I'm a little biased, lol, he is a cutie. Between all of the grandparents he's going to be spoiled rotten, he has two sets of them down there in OK. He really is a good baby, he hardly cries & when he does it's very briefly. We got there soon after he was born by C-Section & as soon as they got them to a room & settled in we got to go in & spend time with them, so he got lots of cuddling right from the beginning. The other grandmother will be back there today & they will be staying at her house while mom recuperates so she will get to spend a lot of time with him. I hope we get to see him as much as possible. Big sister got to see him by video from my DS's android phone. Anyway, it was a very exciting day & something I will remember & cherish.

Here is grandma & baby Rayce:

Aw Trish I am so happy for you. Looks like he has lots of hair. I am so glad that things went okay. He looks very healthy for all he's been through with the pregnancy. I'm so glad you posted a picture!

Congratulations Trish - he is lucky to have so many grandparents and what a special day it was for you!

What a difference the sun makes. It was 1 degree when I got up this morning - I had no idea it was supposed to get that cold overnight last night. I didn't have to wait long for double digits though, and waited to go and do first chores until then. Most of the flock was outside the coop, hanging out in the small area not covered by snow - I think they are so tired of hanging out in the coop that all it took was a little sun to get them to go out. It is still only 17 but with the sun shining it looks almost nice out there. I can't wait for the warming trend starting tomorrow.

The sheep and goats have really been going through the hay with this cold spell. DS and I carried several fresh bales down the day before the snow and I'm so glad we did that - I only had to go and get one more bale since, and that was before the new snow yesterday. We gave the ewes their first round of vaccinations on Sunday morning - that was quite the rodeo. They are supposed to get it within a month of giving birth so that the lambs will get the protection via the dam's milk, but it is a guessing game for us, as to when to expect them to start lambing. We'll give the second dose in 4 weeks regardless and by then I think for sure we will be close to seeing lambs. This morning I felt the belly of one while she was eating and I would swear I felt a little kick

Aw HEChicken I've never had lambs. But I remember feeling my goats bellies with the little kids moving. Just makes me feel happy all over. The sun is shining and that is wonderful. Even though it is still in the teens here the sun is melting some of the snow out of the gutters and such.
I haven't made it outside yet. I decided to do a little dish washing since I couldn't find the sink any more! Now my sleeves are wet.

Here's a pic of my hatches this week. I am missing one of the turkeys in this picture. I have 6 turkey poults, one barred rock, one white orpington, and 4 lavender orpingtons here.
