Sense I free range my flock last night when I went to lock up everyone my two big roosters had it out and both are a bloody mess. I've separated them from others cleaned them up. What else can I do?

My two were fighting all day yesterday too ! What's the deal, did we just reach some peak hormone season ? I had to hose them down a few times to get them apart. They've been together since last spring.

yes planning on being there--happy that it wont be so darn cold this year--last year couldn't tell who was who since we were all bundled to our eye balls in blankets. For those who haven't been there before you will go right by "Blazer Burger" on your way in--its great old fashioned burger joint--
Good! I didn't know about Blazer Burger. I come in from the opposite direction. What street is it on? I might to grab a burger on my way home.

Most of their injuries are probably on their combs. If you have some blue Kote you can spray their wounds. These usually bleed pretty good and therefore they rarely get infected. Watch them for infection and or them acting like they don't feel good. If they appear normal other than wounds I would do nothing else. If you don't have blue Kote some triple antibiotic ointment or something similar would work just fine. Boys will be boys.

Well I moved 32 extra birds last night. Woot! I have 6 more sold that I am taking to Gardner to be picked up. I have a few more young cockerels I decided need to grow for awhile. I am sure there'll be more before the summer is over. My buyer said she'd take ducks later so I guess I may throw some in soon to hatch. I just hate to fire up even more incubators just yet. I prefer to let the weather settle a little first. Now I've added to my list of chores. I have a couple pens to clean and birds to move around some more. It may not get done today. All my bending and catching yesterday was pretty hard on my old back.
Maybe next week I'll actually get started on the coop I want to build.

Thanks for the lighting help. I just got mine adjusted so it comes on at 5:00 and off around 7:00 or so. They should thank me, now the girls get to sleep in.

I have a low fence that one or two of my birds like to jump into my neighbors yard. I've been thinking of trying to put something on top of the fence to discourage that. The most troublesome now has both wings clipped, she almost can't make it over, but managed again recently.

Instead of putting something on top of the fence, I wonder about a little strand of electric wire offset on my side of the fence, to make it so they have to start farther out. Has anyone tried that with fence jumpers? Does that help or do they just tend to start farther out? I know it's going to vary per bird...

I don't have many rules for them, but if they're going to live the life of pampered luxury in my yard, they play by the rules, and not going into the neighbors yard is a non-negotiable rule.

I caught Copper off her nest this morning and candled her 5 eggs. (8 days) It is looking like 3 or 4 of them are developing. The one Green egg appears to be clear, but I'll give it a few more days because it is so hard to see. The egg, itself, is showing some porosity, so it probably won't finish anyway. The other 4 are from my Marans chicks from last summer

I guess we will see in another week when I candle them again.

It must be in the air

I also read between 14-16 hours of light a day its because where there from south America it replicates what would be more standard toward the equator. They need a patern day/night at least 8hrs dark I just have heat lamps with a flood bulb and it lights a pretty good area then if I needed heat bulbs I can use them just swich them out. I have alot of mice too and my boyfriend said he saw a rat last night ahh

My understanding is chickens are believed to have come from various areas of the world. The first recorded mention of them being in SE Asia about 8000 years ago. But there is some question about whether there were some in America before Columbus arrived. So who knows? At any rate regardless of origination they adapt well to different climates. I always wondered how the chickens in Alaska get by when it is during the long dark winter and the long days of light. I know that some people live off the grid and I wonder how they keep water and stuff for them. I'd love to talk to someone who lives there. I would almost bet that the birds adapt to the conditions they are in and lay accordingly.
I'm worn out and anxiously awaiting the birds to go to bed so I can close doors and call it a night.

I have wondered about that as well Danz, I wish I knew someone who lives in Alaska, but I don't. I know they have special lighting there in places for the times when it's dark all the time. I wonder how the chickens handle the 24 hour light days too. We were there during June & it was so strange to have it light all night long. There were people walking around at midnight because it's still light out. They have special darkening drapes so you can sleep in the lodges. It's just weird, I don't think I could stand the winters being dark all the time & so cold too.

Corner of center and washington across from the pool complex (Gardner road exit from 35 turns into center street and Washington is the road that runs on the side of the fairgrounds down where the registration building usually is)
