Consolidated Kansas

lizzy I'm glad you got a little anyway. We got some rain last night, but honestly I don't think it was that much, it wasn't really muddy. Of course it's been so dry that any moisture we get just soaks right in & is gone.

DisneyGal25 I'm glad you're enjoying your babies, I know I sure did, they're a lot of fun, messy but fun. I have some more due to hatch May 21st from eggs I had shipped. When I candled them it looked like they all were developing so we'll see how it goes this time. Ducks are a little harder to hatch than chicks since they need more humidity. I can't raise the humidity that much in my incubator since I have chicken eggs in there as well, but I try to raise it for the hatching.

It was really chilly today, I left to go meet someone we were getting t-posts from & wished I had worn my jacket. This weather is just bizarre, 90 some degrees one day & 60s & 70s the next. It rained on us on the way but we didn't get any more rain at our house. I hope my chicks outside will be OK tonight, it's going to get pretty cool out there. In fact it's going to be cooler all week. I guess it's a good time to get out there & get my hoop coop done while it's not so hot. I need to go get more cable ties though before I can finish the wire part. I guess I could start building doors anyway.

Enjoying them bunches! I such a worry wart though so I keep getting up to check on them...

kskingbee, long time no see, stop by & chat once in awhile.

I still have chicks hatching today, I wish they would hurry up & get out of those shells, I get impatient some times waiting for the stragglers.

It's still cool here today & kind of windy.

Finally finished everything on the hoop coop except the neat boxes tonight and moved my Cochins into it after dark tonight. I am still trying to decide what to use for nest boxes in there. Tomorrow I will clean out the raised coop that we are turning into our chick brooder. Hopefully by the weekend my Cochins will figure out where their new home is because they are shut out of the old one. We are leaving for a short trip on Saturday morning. I would like to let them free range from the hoop coop on Friday morning to see if they will roost there Friday night. We'll see.
The new chicks are all doing fantastic. I can't hardly wait to leave for this trip just so that I can get back home and hatch some more.

Howdy everyone!!

Just popping in to say hello and hope all is well. Scanned back the last few pages, lots of cute babies. I wish I could hatch some chicks but not this year! Just got back from Maine middle of last week. We had Amelia's first birthday party, a baby shower for my sister and went house hunting! We are under contract on a colonial on 20 acres!! So excited and hoping everything works out, this house and property is awesome. The house needs some updating, vintage 1970s old lady look right now but nothing we can't chip away at! And 20 acres in southern Maine is relatively unheard of at the price range we are in right now. It was just an incredibly divine and lucky find.

We went this past weekend to pick up our new Pyr puppy from the breeder in Springfield. He is super cute and so gentle with Amelia. She had three males and of the three he was the only one who didn't bomb all over the baby so he came home with us! His name is Dandy!

Congrats on finding a house, I hope it works out for you, that's exciting! We sure hate to see you go though, but understand you want to be closer to your family. We'll miss you & that cute little peanut. I hope you will still drop in once in awhile & say hi & tell us how things are going.

We got our Cayugas today! Sadly the male was DOA :( So we picked up a bitty mallard. This is in the car right after getting them....

I have been letting the chickens run around In Our yard during the day. For the first few weeks, I would lock the doggie door and only let them out for a couple hours. And during this time I would take the dogs out on a leash to get them used to the chickens. They were behaving so well. So a week ago I decided to see how they were off leash. They did awesome! Didn't chase the chickens or anything. So the past couple days I have let the chickens have free range of the yard and the dog door unlocked. And no problems. Well today, at 6pm. I went out to check on everybody and my dog was chewing on a carcas of one of the smaller chickens. No head. No blood anywhere. And I don't see a bunch of feathers anywhere. Could it have been my dog who killed it? I'd hate to have to lock them up when the chickens are out. They've done so well the past few weeks! Btw my dogs are Pomeranian chihuahua and Pomeranian dachshund ( the one chewing on the dead chicken ) and I didn't notice any other harm to the chicken other than her head was gone. And I can't find the head or any blood anywhere

I would guess that the dog killed the chicken. Dachshunds are probably about the most unsafe breed around chickens from what I've seen. Well any of the terriors are very questionable. It probably just became too much for him. The other option might be an owl or a raccoon because they both pop off heads but I would expect that at night. Not during the day. If it were me I'd have a shock collar on the dogs and watch from a distance. Then if any chasing happened, I'd zap them good.
I've been so busy I've not really had time to post much.
