Consolidated Kansas

Today was supposed to be a hatch day here. I have 15 cochin eggs that were chirping last night. This morning there were pip holes. And then nothing. I have no idea what's happened.
Things have been crazy busy around here this week. It sounds like you have all had busy weeks as well. I've missed hearing from everyone. I think that we are supposed to have more rain tomorrow night. We could use a dry out here. The bugs are eating me for lunch out there tonight.

oatbucket that is so cute, I love watching baby ducks & geese. I haven't let mine go in the pool yet.

friendshipstar, some hatches are just slow, sometimes maddeningly so. I have to make myself walk away from the incubator & keep busy so I'm not looking in there all the time when I have a hatch due. It's best if I am not able to check on them often & then when I do come back there are usually chicks to put in the brooder.

Well I got some bad news today about my leg I broke in January. I continue to have a lot of pain, especially waking me up early in the morning so that I'm not getting enough sleep. I'm kind of wandering around in a fog all the time. I went back to my regular Dr. today & she finally did a follow-up x-ray, which should have been done by the Ortho specialist & wasn't & lo & behold the fracture hasn't healed. So I'm supposed to go see another specialist as soon as I can get in. That was not something I wanted to hear, however it does explain why I have continued to have so many problems for so long. If it's not one thing it's another.

Trish,
I am sure sorry to hear about your leg.
Two babies have hatched since my last post. I am praying that by the time I get up in the morning chicks will be chirping like crazy.
Good night everyone.

I hope you can get in quickly. They might want to do a bone density scan to see if that's causing a delay in healing.

Hope everyone else is busy with GOOD things!

Hello fellow peepers. We have started wheat harvest here so things are busy and hectic. We are lucky though to have wheat to harvest. With the drought there are so many who have very little. Now if the rain will hold off to let us harvest before the weeds take over.

Trish I am sorry about your leg but it must be a relief to get some answers. The little ones I got from you are doing great. The trip did not slow them down a bit. I can't wait to see them feathered out. Just hoping the aren't all cockerels. That would be my luck. Lol. I guess that would just mean that I need to get more chicks next spring.

Oat bucket those little swimmers sure are cute. They do love their water.

Friendshipstar I hope that your hatch turns out good. I am not sure that I could stand the waiting. It is probably a good deal that I do not have an incubator.

Danz I love to stop in here and read the posts. I have learned so much from all of you but feel that I have nothing important enough to post. I need to change my attitude and share my journey with you all.

My hens have really cut back on their laying here lately. I don't know if it is the heat or if they are hiding their eggs. My broody hen's chicks are almost 6 weeks old now so hopefully she will start up again soon along with the other broody that I broke. How long does it usually take them to start laying again?

Broodies can take any amount of time to lay. A lot depends on how run down they got their system trying to hatch. If they hatched chicks they will have the chicks on their own before they lay again.
I am really short on eggs this week. I keep finding piles where the girls have gone broody. Then I have to toss them because I don't know how long they have been there.
I got like 8 eggs in the last two days. That is ridiculous for all the hens I have.
I have to run to town with eggs then get back home. It's not a good day for chickens because the air is too still and it's too hot. I don't have fans yet so I could loose some today.

My hens have done some dirty tricks on me lately, I found a whole pile of eggs under one of the toppers we have where I had some straw stored. They were rather artistic about carving out a nice hole in the top of the straw to lay their eggs & they were from a bunch of different hens. I hate having to pitch eggs but these I had no idea how long had been there so the cats got a good treat.

dwink2, I'm glad the chicks made the trip well & are doing good. The lavender Ameraucanas you got will take a lot longer to be able to sex because of their peacomb. They have fooled me before & it's really hard to be sure till you start getting the saddle feathers on the roosters or they start crowing. The breeds with big combs you can tell usually fairly early since the cockerels get a bigger, pinker comb a lot earlier. I hope for girls for you. Don't be afraid to post even if it's just mundane everyday stuff. Danz & I don't have earth shaking news every day, but it's still nice to have people stop in & say hi anyway.

I need to be better about posting once in a while too. I like to stop by and read and then I get to the end of the thread where I should post and my mind goes blank .
danz- sure was good to see you today , DD is having fun with the ducklings they are in her room tonight in that tub. I think we'll move them out tomorrow . The others seemed to enjoy their new digs. I will try to get some pictures up soon so you can see them . After we got home we did a little housework and chores ,went to pick up a friend for a sleepover and then got out on the mower. I was mowing till it was so dark I could hardly see where I was going but I got it all done (whew!). Maybe I'm a little OCD but I think it's nice to get it all done on Friday so we can enjoy it over the weekend. And now I've dropped this phone about 5 times since I sat down so it's time for sleep. Later.

We have been fishing all night. But when we left home we had 10 little blue Cochins in the incubator. Too bad they are already spoken for and will be leaving for their new home tomorrow afternoon. Next Thursday I have some lavender orpingtons and Cochin eggs to hatch out. I have six or seven cream legbar eggs incubating too. And I'll be darn if I can remember when I started them. Oops!
