Congrats on your new duck. The Appleyards seem kind of hard to find.
I'm already going insane. This sitting around the house just isn't my style. I'm afraid I'll start stress eating. I did venture out in the yard with crutches while ago to tell my DH my brother in law was bringing some fencing over from my Dad's. By the time I got back in the house my foot was really swollen. I think I am going to really appreciate that wheel chair tomorrow.

Oh wow! Ethan looks like a little boy now instead of a tiny baby. That's amazing. He always looks so happy. What an adorable baby! You and JosieChick are such great moms. You can see it in your kids. Being nurtured by a good mom shows in so many ways. I don't think I was ever that great of a Mom. Too many kids, having to work all the time away from home and I just tended to stay too busy in general. I had to leave my job for one of my sons because of his medical problems and stayed home until he was about 18 months. You can sure see the difference that the nurturing did in just his whole attitude not to mention how sweet he is. He would hate it if he read this though. He tries to act like a big tough guy but he's a teddy bear.
Yes, he does look like a little boy now. My baby boy is growing up SO FAST!!!!

He turned 8 months old a few days ago, and I am finding it hard to believe it has been 8 months already!!! My mom is on my case already to have another one. I'm not so sure I"m ready for another one yet. There's something about the idea of being outnumbered by little ones that is rather daunting.... not to mention that I would be able to do even fewer things because I can't take 2 with me like I can just one... things like doing chores and such would become MUCH more difficult, especially with as many snakes as we have around here.

Ethan is a happy baby. I have had quite a few people tell me how good he is and how he is such a happy baby. Even people that seem him on a regular basis have asked me if he is always "this good"... and he usually is! If he is cranky, it is usually because he is hungry or tired. That's about the only time he is cranky.

I honestly think about a two to three year spread between kids is perfect. Young enough to play with each other but old enough to "help" with the baby. I actually think having more than one helps because kids do entertain kids. It's just those first 5-6 months that get a bit crazy. It works until the reach their teen years then they don't want to be seen together!

Thanks!! I really hope you feel better soon! Being layed up is the worst!! My thoughts and prayers go out to you!

lizzy, Ethan is growing so fast, wow. My little grandson is growing like a weed too, I need to get down there to see him soon before he's walking.

DisneyGal congrats on the new duck, Appleyards are kind of hard to find any more. My missing duck never has reappeared so I guess something got her

. The other 3 that were in the group with her seem to be hanging around closer to the pens now, maybe they know something I don't.

danz, I hope your ankle heals quickly so you can get around without so much pain. I was telling my DH about your accident today & I told him my ankle still swells & hurts even after 6 months. His comment was, "Well your muscles & bones are weird." I just looked at him like what? He then went on to say that because of my Fibromyalgia & autoimmune problems I don't heal like other people. I guess he's right about that, it does take me a lot longer to heal injuries especially with muscles & tendons involved. What's going on with this bone, well I don't know. I have an appt. coming up with another specialist in a couple of weeks. Hopefully he will have some ideas on getting the thing healed, I sure hope so. I'm just flat out sick of the pain & all of it. I have limited range of motion in that knee because of the swelling & inflammation still there. Anyway, danz I hope you enjoy your day with your family & take it easy.

Trish not to be a downer but when I had wrist surgery in the beginning I was in a cast for three years and had a second surgery when they took my hip bone to repair it. The first time they used cadaver bone and it never healed. Then years later the whole mess had to be done with titanium. So yeah sometimes bones don't heal. I'm just thankful this isn't a bone. I can sure feel the stress on my other leg though. My knees are a mess anyway and the added pressure isn't doing them any good.
The worst part though is not being able to take care of the animals. I just constantly fret and I am going to have some more casualties I'm sure. I just looked out and saw my pen of youngest goslings and ducks still running the yard. I always shut them up at night and I guess that isn't getting done. I sure hope they are still going to the pen to sleep. And I hope DH is remembering to feed and water them. They are kind of off by themselves.
I'm going to have to master these crutches somehow so I can get out there and check on things.

Well I hope it doesn't take 3 years to heal this bone in my leg, I'll be stark raving mad by then. Yeah it sure does put a lot of pressure on your other leg. I know mine has taken a big hit with me having pain in the broken one & the way I have to walk sometimes. My other knee isn't good anyway due to the arthritis & it hasn't been happy having to take up the slack.

I sure didn't have a good night with the darned leg last night, it hurt all night long despite the pain medication.

Danz, I know you want to get out there & check on your birds, but you need to take it easy or you'll just hurt yourself more. I know exactly how you feel about someone else caring for your birds. I would ask questions to my DH about some bird or the other & he would answer I don't know. I was so glad when I went back out to care for my own birds again so I could see how they were doing myself. It's still a struggle to do it even now, but I'm managing. I bought this new wagon with sides on it awhile back & take my whole load of feed down at once for all of the birds & rabbits. That saves me a lot of walking & climbing up & down that hill. Once in awhile I forget something & have to go back up, but most of the time it works out great.

Yeah My DH is pretty sick of doing my chores. I am trying to do as much as I can. My worst problem right now is getting up and down the stairs from the front and back doors. If the ground were just even I can move but if I hit one of those uneven spots it's not a good thing at all. I really pushed the envelope today and my foot is showing me it was too much. The wheelchair was a life saver though.
I had a great day with my sons, daughter in laws, and my two youngest granddaughters today.
The zoo leaves a lot to be desired but it was probably about just right for the little girls. They were really tired by the time we went to lunch.
It's such a rare treat to get to spend time with my family. I feel good all over. I wish my two oldest daughters were close enough they could be here too.
I miss my birds so much. At least I have these bins of chicks in the house and I still care for them. I'm kind of glad there aren't more of them right now.
I've had several losses the last few days of young birds but that's to be expected when I can't take care of them I guess.
I really need to get eggs gathered but I just can't do it.
OH Tweety if you are reading I forgot to answer you the other day. My son and daughter in law close on the house this coming Friday. Then they'll be moving the rest of their stuff as they can. They need to get their storage unit empty by the end of the month. I can't wait to see their house but I think it will be a while. I have too much going on myself right now. I have more things scheduled for July than I have all year.

Hey everyone I'm new to BYC. My 14 year old son Dustin and I started our first ever flock of chickens late April with 16 chicks. I just found this thread and hope to learn from your experience since we also live in KS. So far our flock seems to be doing great. I am having trouble keeping the water cool in these hot days of summer. Yesterday I started putting frozen gallons of water in our water buckets. We use 5 gallon buckets with water nipples, 1 in the run and 1 in the yard. We let them free range all day. Does the lid on the bucket kept the heat in and make the water warm? Should I take the lid off the bucket? We also started freezing fruit and vestibules and cool afternoon treats.

We have (8) RIR 6 hens and 2 roosters, (2) Buff Orpington 1 hen 1 rooster, (2) BPR both hens, (2) Black Sex Lynks both hens, and (2) Americana's both hens. Total of (13) hens and (3) roosters.

We are enjoying our flock a and love the entertainment they give us. The roosters are chasing the hens and we are keeping an eye on them to make sure they are not missing neck feathers and no blood. So far we don't see any difference in the neck feathers even though we know they pull some out when they pin them down. Do I need to isolate the roosters at all or just continue to let nature take place. Since I'm new to this not really sure what is normal and what is to much. Again so far no signs of any trouble from the hens. They do squeal and run from the rooster that is chasing them.

I believe I have 1 to many roosters but my son doesn't want me to put it into the freezer and my wife doesn't want us to get any more chickens. Lol. I'm hoping to start getting some eggs in August and hope all are laying by end of October.

One more question what is the easiest way to refer back to this thread. Do I click on the subscription?

Thanks for reading looking forward to learning from fellow kansasans.
