Consolidated Kansas

My garden is shot. The squash bugs killed off everything. The only thing left out there that might produce is the sweet potatoes. I'm not sure it was a hot enough summer for them to do the best but the vines look healthy. I should at least get some sweet potatoes from all my work. I can't complain about the onions and garlic though. I need to find the time to get in there and till the ground because it is nearly time to plant more garlic. I've used very little of all I grew. I forget I have it.
I had another very busy day today. I had people here all day until about 4:30. I sold roosters this morning then had some people who have been here several times bring some new friends so we had a 3 hour tour. I ended up selling 3 pullets and 15 sussex chicks in the process.
We had a friend bring his big tractor over and we moved the big trailer north several feet. With the building going in we wouldn't have been able to get anything in there to pull it out. I honestly can't wait for it to be gone from my view. Of course it could be a long time before I get help moving it again.

Ive heard the renfest all over the radio mostly. I don't know how many of you are horse people but at the jousting they had a beautiful Percheron Arabian cross, He knew tricks and everything, such a sweet horse too. Let me tell you though, it wasn't too crowded, well compared to the Irish fest ya know... I suppose if you don't like crowds it wouldn't be the thing for you.
My friend Hope has decided though we will go whole hog on dressing up next year. She wants to be a Gypsy Pirate and I plan on going as a warrior madien. My pony and I did that a few years ago for haloween. I need to dress up with him again this year, I hope. My other friend will go like me I think, or a Gypsy.

While we were there they had a petting zoo, somthing that was free! And so I went in and they had this poor turkey, I don't think the thing was doing well, it looked pale and real hot, it had this goose friend that was trying to protect it i swear. I felt bad for it. I hope it gets to stay home tomorrow...

I don't have horses but I'm hoping to get there yet! The Arabian Percheron cross sounds amazing!! I'd have loved to have seen the jousting! Your costume idea sounds really cool too!! :)

I thought about taking the family to the renfest this year but it is just too expensive! Especially with all the money school drags out of you at the beginning of the year!!

I have a second one laying now. She started on Thursday but her eggs are a little weird. Why do they have these white speckles on them? Does anyone know? The other layers are a perfect brown.

I have a hen who lays brown speckled eggs (with lighter speckles). They are really cool in an egg basket. She isn't laying right now (moulting in combo with being 3 years old) or I'd post a picture. I just love the wide variety of eggs I get from my girls. My newest layer (Marans/EE cross) lays pinkish eggs. I've gotten 4 eggs over the last 5 days and she just started laying.

Prairie Fleur I thought about getting a pony for my granddaughters but my chicken friends here talked me out of it. It's an awful lot of expense. I know one of my daughter in laws still thinks I should but I just don't have the budget for one.
Tatinatimom I have had several chickens that lay eggs like that. And they consistently do. It's just egg characteristics of a certain chicken. They even had bumps on them you could feel a lot of the time. To me that just means some cool variation in eggs. I am sure it isn't caused by a dietary thing because all of the birds eat the same. Just enjoy the difference. I believe it is mineral deposits and a result of how that particular bird processes stuff.
I got up late and need to get boot scooting soon. I have a lot more stuff to move today. If I could foresee the future I sure would have placed things differently to begin with. So many of my things have to be moved around and replaced because I didn't know what the future held. My goal for the next year is to get things more organized and put in a particular place. Doubt it will happen and will ever stay there but the concept is there.
I have a ton of iris that need to get planted on top of every thing else and I don't have the bed ready for them. Why do I always take on so many more projects than I possibly have time for? I'm certifiably crazy.

Im with you guys with the expensive part. Ren fest is expensive, but as a kid its nice, my dad had already gotten tickets from somewhere so It worked to take my friends.
I've seen that kind of egg before from our hens, But with ours they hadn't been consistent, just every once and a while I would get an egg like that.
Seems like mom and I have a day of sewing and lawn mowing to do. Ive got homework I should get ahead of today but so much farm work!

Thanks guys!! I am so excited to finally have a second one out of the eleven laying! I can't wait to be able to "lay off" the store bought eggs!!!
Danz, I can feel the speckles on mine too. You can definitely see them. They are raised bumps. I do like the character it brings to the eggs and I will know who to thank when I use it! :)

Some of my layers have what I figure are calcium deposits on them, bumps on the shell. They're not like what you showed, but often they are at the end of the egg, usually on the bottom or pointy end.

Well I got all of the mowing done yesterday, it really needed to be done since I hadn't mowed in awhile. I also went out & mowed along the fence posts where we're going to put fence on the west side so we could lay the fence down easier. It's pretty overgrown out there & the grass & weeds are kind of tall. I hope there will be big progress on the fence this afternoon, we'll see.

Well I'd better get myself moving as well & get out there & do some things. I need to check all the water for the birds & animals today. Everybody enjoy this weather!
