Consolidated Kansas

I'm going to take my first attempt at moving some of my older hens out to the freezer this weekend. I've not found anyone to train me so I'm going to watch a ton of YouTubes and just go for it. Cone and some other stuff are on order (including a drill based de-feather, not sure how that will work). Everyone says it's pretty easy, just don't know that I have the heart/guts to actually do it. Might take three birds to the farm and come home with two or three live ones. My brother's going to help me so I think we can pull it off. Biggest challenge is figuring out what kind of tub/pan I can use for the scald process. Don't want to take anything from the kitchen. We'll see how it goes, it will be an amazing learning process!
Oh boy, I wish I'd had a chance to give you feedback before you ordered. I have that drill powered plucker and don't like it at all. If you have a drill press it might work okay but otherwise, it really doesn't work. We don't have a drill press and found it really difficult to use without it. DH held the chicken while I used the plucker and a couple of times I hit his fingers and he said that was REALLY painful. After that I held and he plucked but if anything, it took longer than doing it by hand and by hand takes so long that I used to procrastinate butchering because I didn't want to spend several hours plucking so……We even went out and looked at drill presses after that experience but decided it was a lot of additional money to spend to be able to pluck, when skinning is so fast and easy. So after that first use, the plucker has sat in a box in the garage and I doubt we'll ever use it again - what a waste of money.

Speaking of plucking, I actually plucked a duck this morning. I started as usual removing head, wings and feet, then started to pull the skin back from the neck but every time I tried to get a grip, what I got instead was a handful of feathers. They were coming out so easily that I completely dry plucked that duck in about the same amount of time it takes to skin them! Maybe she was getting close to being in molt because I've never been able to dry pluck like that before. Even the wing and tail feathers just popped right out. She is now in the oven roasting. Normally I skin and then render downy he meat in the crockpot but since she was plucked I decided to roast for a change.

Trish, so sorry to hear about your kitty - what a bummer. Goats are such a PITA!!!

I woke two nights ago around 3am to hear footsteps on the front porch. I went to investigate and saw the driveway wet and a flash of lightning. I opened the front door and found the goats at the far end of the porch, sheltering from the rain. I went back to bed but 5 minutes later realized I was never going to get back to sleep with them marching back and forth on the porch so I got up and went out to put them away and found all the sheep out as well. The gate had unlatched and swung open and they all took advantage. They seemed to know they shouldn't be out though and as soon as they saw me, headed towards the gate - even the goats - and walked right back into their pasture. I secured the gate and went back inside but of course by then I was so wide awake I didn't sleep again for hours.

Zigzag, I can't remember where you are located. If you want someone to help with the first birds, let me know - I might be available for a lesson.

@Trish44 - I'd forgotten about skinning. I may try the drill based plucker and also skin one. The skinning does sound easy. My biggest question is whether I can actually reach in and pull the guts out like I've seen online....

What do you use for bags for them when everything is done? Does TSC see the larger bags?

@HEChicken - We were cross posting. I knew the drill based thing was a risk, but thought I'd try it. Reviews on Amazon were mixed. I'm in the Kansas City area, so I think we are quite aways apart. Thanks for the offer! It will be an experience, of that I'm super sure. Another vote for skinning....

Once you skin them, you just bag them up like normal?

Well, darn about the distance. I usually do one bird at a time so I put them straight in the crockpot. No oil, water, spices or anything - just the bird and put it on the low setting. Mine has 4, 6, 8 & 10 hours settings after which it will turn off and go to a "warm" setting. If the bird is young I use the 8-hour setting, if an older bird, I set it for 10 hours. At the end of that time the meat is literally falling off the bones and swimming in a pool of the birds fat and juices. After it has cooled, I separate the meat from the bones and put it in the sandwich size ziploc bags in casserole amounts. I.e., usually ½ - 1-pound of meat to a bag. The meat then goes into the freezer already cooked which makes it really easy to pull it out and use it in a casserole. I try to pull it out the day before and let it defrost in the fridge overnight but if I need it in a hurry, it doesn't take much time to defrost it in the microwave, and I can throw together a meal pretty quickly.

Yeah, Her name is Precious Metal, after the fact that my aunt is a wonderful bronze sculptress, so it was a fitting name. But yes we had bought her mother with intentions of breeding and selling Morgans, don't know why the wasn't broke just a brood mare, and just of the age to have a baby so we pretty much went right into it. I remember the weeks coming up t to when she was due I would stay out in the little camper watching through the window with my aunt till she made me go to bed. I think its been nice to have know Tally scene she was out, I do remember wanting to see a foal born and got my wish oh at like 5 years I think? So she is about mm 6 years maybe? Oh i don't know I am off. But I didn't train her my self though, a girl about my age trained her and Tally growing up with us she never bucked or did anything, I must admit though she picked on tally a lot and made her sides hard so I might have to experiment with some spurs... :rant Though another guy Bret Bartly trained her to drive and he really did her well, I think driving was a good thing for her. So I haven't trained her myself but I am working with her more and let me tell you I think she trusts me too much to not hurt her. I was trying to lunge her the other day and she kept stopping and turning towards me to eat grass. I ended up having to run with her to get her to do something. Oh well I suppose its better than her running off on me right? Lets see if I can find a good pic.... Not sure If Ive got a good one but this is me parking her out, its not the best pic, I think I look crazy but hey we've all had that right? Oh and I don't know if anyone has seen Jet or not but heres him
Wow they're both gorgeous!!! When I'm ready to purchase a horse maybe you'll know of someone who has some nice ones available!!! Give them an extra pat or two from me. I'd say that that's probably a better problem than if she was always trying to get away from you! Personally I love it that Morgans live so long! Is Grandpa still ridable?

Before I go on I just wanted to make a tribute sort of thing to the victims of 9/11. For me I will always think about 9/11 being the year I was born. That's all I have to say on this, I just wanted to make note of it.

Thanks danz about Jet, and Ryan is doing pretty good this month, not to many illnesses or anything like that, he's been pretty healthy right now. And I don't know if mom was working the last time she was on but now she's is working at the Foundry. We all call her the heavy metal chick now, listening to all the old heavy metal and stuff.
zigzag, congrats on the baby, I missed that part when I last posted.
Prairie Fluer, by Grandpa, do you mean Jet? Or have I talked about my showing.... Because Grandpa, aka Abawi is about 27 and he just wanders around the barn. Really he dose it is so funny he is a big dog, we let him out in the afternoon and he wanders the farm, so we don't ride him any more we stopped riding him about a year ago. Jet though this might be my last year I can ride him through the snow, its kinda a thing I have going, Midwinters Jet Stream... Kinda have to ride him in the snow. Maybe next year I will drive him in the snow. Hmm.
I can think of several people breeding and selling morgans, If you'd ever like this october there is the morgan grand nationals at the fair grounds in OKC. There are always people buying and selling there but most of it is the park and driving stuff. If I were you I would look for horses even off craigslist and Morgan Show case I belive. A lot of people sell their morgans there and not all of them are hot show horses. Some of the western and other horses are very nice for trail riding.

It is soooooooo nice out today! I absoulutly love it. Everyone out at the car loop was complaining and I was ready to be danceing. Oh by the way have any of you heard of the Mellophone? It's like an oversized trumpet, I might have to post a picture of one but I get to play it because I play French Horn.

ZigZag Congratulations on having a boy! You have a complete family now. I'm sorry you won't be at Gardner but I certainly understand. I need to take a lot of birds but I just don't have time to build cages and make the trips up there. Too much going on here right now. But I really intend to go just to see my friends and buy more wire if they have some at a good price.
Morgangirl I didn't know your Mom was working. I hope she is doing okay. Be sure to tell her I said Hi, and give Ryan a hug for me.
After all my work yesterday I've managed to do a lot of nothing today. It's really cold to me and I don't do cold. Just one more reinforcement that the building is the right thing to do. Less time out in the cold!

Hello everyone. Looks like Fall weather is here for a bit. Everyone cross your fingers that we don't get a freeze for a couple more weeks so that my pumpkins have time to set on the vine so that they will be ready for Halloween

! I have a beautiful batch of Howdens and wold hate to lose them!

We are going to take advantage of the fair weekend weather and butcher the first batch of meaties. I will be moving all of them to my isolation pen tonight, even though not all of them are going to meet the knife this weekend. They are just getting too aggressive with my layers. this was the first year that I raised CX with my reg flock and all in all it was a huge success. At 9 weeks old we have NO leg issues and they have filled out beautifully. I am so thankful for the wisdom here on BYC or I never would have given CX another shot! We will butcher on Sun, and I think we will be doing 9 of them.

Everyone enjoy the weekend

Fall is here today for sure, it's in the 50s today & supposed to be a low of 44 tonight, brrrr. I'm going to have to get that blanket out. We had rain forecast for today but I haven't seen it yet, that's OK by me.

Good luck with your butchering. We raised CX last year & I swore I wouldn't have them again. I kept them in a pen to raise them & by the time they were ready for butcher the pen smelled so bad I had to till it under to use it again. I decided then I would just raise dual purpose birds if I need to raise any more for meat. I have heritage BRs & some others I can use for meat & I seems like I always have some extra roosters when I hatch.

Last evening I was out feeding my birds when I looked up & my goat Patches was out again. I had just put them & the sheep up & fed them a few minutes before. She had pushed on the back corner of the pen until she broke the cable ties & she had pushed till she got through there. I had to stop feeding & go wire it shut & then try to get the goats back in. They had decided that they weren't going back in, they wanted a snack, so I had to trick them back in with a handful of feed. Hopefully I got the fence fixed well enough they can't get out again.

Hello all! Chilly day here too. I hope that we have a fall and don't go straight into winter. I am trying to decide if I am going to do supplemental lighting this winter. The days are sure getting shorter and my basket lighter. I did it last year and it worked out great but I sure don't want to cause stress to my hens.

Someone asked if anyone uses roll out nests and I sure do. Mine are similar to the 10 nest boxes that Trish was talking about but they have the rollout feature added on. I love them and have not had a egg eater yet. I have the plastic liners in them and they sure are easy to clean but I rarely have to do that. I think that it helps the hens not go broody too. I do have a few that are shy and avoid them and lay in the box on the floor. They were the only ones to go broody. I did have a few frozen eggs last winter but I work all day and don't gather eggs until the evening. I am guessing that they would have frozen in a regular nest box too. They are pricey though but I was having to buy new anyway so I spent the extra $$.
