Gardner was pretty much a bust. The smallest auction I've seen there to date and a very tiny crowd. I really figured it would be huge. People are obviously going to have a ton of birds in the spring auction.

I'll admit if any of you know where we live, I diddnt know the auction was going on today.

Danz, they have been doing great, and I think inside I have suspected all along that this one is a roo. He has shot up in size the last couple of weeks and appears to be 1.5 times larger than the rest.

Would you be interested in him, or know someone who would be? Hate for him to go to the freezer.

He's a very nice looking cockerel. Put him on Craigslist. Let them know he is from Patricia Middleton and HinksJC lines and breeder quality. You could easily get $10 or more for him for a breeder. Let them know he has been raised as a pet. These boys don't reach full size for about 18 months so you can also note that he is young and will continue to get larger. Ultimately you can't know what people will do with him, but at least you can sell him.
No I don't need him. I am now raising the 100% English lines and wouldn't have a use for him.

We have been at the Walnut Valley Festival for the last two days. The entertainment was good, but boy was yesterday miserable in the heat & humidity. I ended up having to move up into the grandstand to get in the shade & then we were suffering with the hard metal bleachers. I just can't tolerate that much sun, I burn to a crisp due to my light skin & I don't take the heat well either. We came home both days in the afternoon to do chicken & animal chores & yesterday I was just soaked with sweat by the time we got done so before I could go back I had to clean up. My DH gets aggravated at me for having to stay in the shade, but I can't help it. I got some sunburn just walking around, let alone sitting out in it very long. We had some new groups this year to hear as well as favorites who have been there before. There is usually about 16,000 people at this festival, so it more than doubles the town population while they're all here.

My chickens fared well while I was gone those days. I had given them a big old pumpkin a couple of days ago & they pretty much have it all stripped down & even the goat was eating the shell. I want to get them some more because they really like them.

I picked the rest of my pumpkins left after the bugs devoured my vines and gave them to the birds yesterday. I'm down to very little left in the garden and no more of the treats the birds like so much. Last year after Halloween I bought a bunch of big pumpkins for 50 cents each the day after Halloween. I'd like to find another deal like that. I do know they birds like the baby pumpkin pie pumpkins best but they like the seeds out of any of them.
I just got done feeding and watering which was quite a chore after being gone yesterday.
I found a chick that is probably 4 weeks old in my brooder while ago that had a huge hernia from it's naval. Looked like virtually all of it's guts were hanging out. Then I discovered it had one very small wing and one normal wing. This was a pullet egg chick so I guess the hen didn't have it quite together yet. I had to have DH dispatch it. I just couldn't see it suffering. It might have lived okay but would always be getting beat out of the food and stuff.
I sat a bunch of eggs today. I was really behind in doing them and tossed several dozen that weren't fresh. I still had some I question but I guess I'll monitor the incubator for strange smells. I have one peachick egg left that still has about 5 days to go. Many of the last ones I set weren't fertile. I hatched 4 peachicks in the last couple days and I have this one more viable egg to go. I am a bit relieved.
I'm ready to get some of these birds around here sold. I have someone who might be interested in all the young sebbies I have if I can get them separated and marked. That would sure cut down the feed bill.

Danz, I'm envious of the good deal you found on pumpkins last year. I went looking the day after Halloween but the stores around here didn't discount them at all after Halloween. Mind you, the times I've tried giving my birds pumpkins, they wouldn't touch them anyway. My neighbor before we moved used to give me her jack-o-lanterns every year. I tried giving them to the birds both raw and cooked but they sat in the yard untouched until they rotted and I had to throw them out. I still have hopes that now that they live out here and most of my flock is different than the birds I had back then, that they'll finally go for them. If I can find any, that is.

Chickenrookie, I have to say, that looks like a very rooish Lav Orp to me as well. I don't raise orps so am not as familiar with them as some other breeds, but his tall thick legs look very male. The comb/wattles could also be an indicator of gender, depending on age.

@Trish44 - We've done the Walnut Valley Festival once, a few years back, and really enjoyed it. I was expecting more bluegrass (for some reason) and was surprised by the variety.

@HEChicken - I bought pumpkins on sale last year and fed 3-5 to my birds. It was a good experience for me. I'd never had the opportunity to shovel up rotting pumpkin from the frozen ground before. Since my birds didn't eat any of them, I got to really enjoy the cleanup process. Can mark that off my bucket list. I might try it again this year. But, somehow I managed to get picky eaters for birds...

I'm watching my girls close today. I moved my three new birds in with the main group last night. They're not exactly a welcoming group so lots of pecking and chasing going on. Previously, my new leghorn was out in the yard with the other birds and decided to goto bed in the coop instead of the temp pen. I was thrilled with that, but the next morning she was bleeding from her nose and comb. Not too bad, but enough that I caught her and put her back in the temp pen.

Do chicken's get fleas? I've looked online and some say yes, some say no. I'm thinking, for me, it's yes. How do I get rid of them? I don't know for sure that they're fleas. But, I'm getting bit and I know it's not chiggers or mosquitos. Fleas are my next guess. It started after I took some grass clippings from my neighbors to cover the bare earth in the run. They have dogs... Might be just a coincidence. Just little red, itchy bumps that go away after a few days.
