Consolidated Kansas

I'm so glad your hen accepted the chicks. I have two broodies right now and they will be first time mothers. I hatched 3 eggs I got from the one who has been sitting the longest and have two more that haven't hatched yet. Unfortunately they will be too old I think to have her accept them by the time her current batch hatches. It would be great if I could put them in with her cause they are supposed to be future layers and I sure don't want to get them confused with my pure bred birds. Besides I'd much rather have her raise them. I need a few replacement layers for next year so I hope I end up with 8 or 10 pullets in the long run. That is wishful thinking and will never happen though.

Can you take the other eggs from your broody and give her the chicks?

I could but she is sitting on a lot more eggs this time. I want the maximum hatch. She got confused the first time and moved to a different nest which is why I pulled the eggs in the first place. This time she has stayed put and is probably now in her last week of sitting.

I see. I am starting to prefer my broodies over an incubator. They are so much fun and heck they might as well do the work

It's not the grand scale building Danz is building but it will fork for a brooder and grow out building.

Four 5 x 10 pens on the inside right and two 10 x 10 on the left.

A 28 x 50 pen on this side

And 30 foot runs coming this way.

Building process is slow when you are using a lot of recycled materials...

KSKingbee that's great, it will be nice when you're done. I have seen people use those before. You'll have to post more pics when you get it all done.

I'm not building any buildings but I did get my BR pen switched around & fixed up & now am going to put up another pen next to it so I can move some birds around. It's always musical pens here trying to get all the breeds I have housed. I'm adding several colors this year for breeding next year so I have to have pens for them all. I haven't really started my winterizing yet, I have several things that need to be done first. It seems like there is always something that needs to be done when you have chickens.

Good morning peeps. The sun is out! It still felt pretty cold this morning when I was out exercising. The wind was blowing bad.

Thanks for all the condolences. My coworkers are taking it pretty hard. That's understandable. Everyone in the office is giving them the support that they need. My other coworker is not back yet since she is arranging for funeral and what not.

Well, I saw 1 baby chick hatched. She/he is so cute. The other eggs are not looking very good. Since DH didn't know how long the eggs had been under her, I'll let her sit on the eggs for another week to see if more will hatch. If not, she has 1 chick to care for. I thought I have another broody in the nest box but DH said he saw her left the box and never went back. Phew.... that's good because I don't need more broody hens at this point.

Danz... I saw the weather map and you probably got tons of rain! The Royal's game was even postponed! Sorry about your little chick. Can't wait to see your completed building. County or any government agencies ... they never do anything fast. The word fast doesn't exist in their dictionary.

Tarabella, so glad your hen accepted the chicks. I agree with you that it is so much easier to have the hen take care of the chicks than us human raising them in the brooder.

Cherwill, garden clean up is definitely hard work. I love to get the veggies and what not but cleaning up after they are done is a dreaded chore for me. I bought an organic insecticide and it smells like neem oil. I don't particularly like the smell of neem oil but it is organic so I used it. The first time I used it on my Adenium and chili pepper plants, their leaves got burned. I wasn't too happy about it at all. So now I spray it on the plants then wait a couple of hrs then rinse them off. I actually resorted to using Sevin last weekend on my Adeniums because they had to come in due to the cold weather. I saw bugs on them and wanted to kill them fast before spreading to other plants already in the house.

Have a good day everyone. I'm back to online training... gotta get those 14 hrs in before 12/6. Talking about time crunch...

The carport building is awesome. What breeds are you going to fill it with?

KSKingBee I have actually been trying to make a deal for big used carport to grow out peachicks cause I liked your carport idea when I was out there. Two problems with it. I can't get the people to come down low enough on it and I can't haul the metal cause it's too long. I shot them a price including delivery but they say they won't have time to deliver it for a while. They do local harvest work and it's been raining so I don't understand why they can't. So I'm trying to find some other options. I wanted to get this particular one because it was 24 X 30 and I could incorporate it along with my current peafowl building. I figured I could enclose one end and wire in the other end and have a pen and housing both that way. No such luck.
I've got to find a place to grow them out soon.
These are the kind of people that deal with enough money that if it sits there and rusts into the ground they won't care. Pretty sad. They didn't pay for it either. They got it for free and just hauled it home.
So I am trying to get hold of someone else to see if I can come up with another option.
If you have a minute send me a PM and let me know how you are doing your pop doors on your building. I'm still on the fence about how to do mine in the big building.
I haven't had time to do any work inside at all. It seems I've been on the run non-stop lately. I want to work on my plumbing but it's kind of hard to do without having interior walls in place.

Peafowl. One of the 5 x 10 pens will be for broody hens setting eggs, one 5 x 10 for hatchlings, two or the 5 x 10 with the 30 x 24 runs will be for either grow outs or breeding pairs or trios. The two 10 x 10 with the 24 x 50 flights will be for breeders.
