Consolidated Kansas

Hi everyone! Sorry about your roo Sharol! I'm having a hard time keeping Roos around here! :( I'm hoping to get another BLR Wyandotte roo sometime soon. I'm waiting to hear shipping cost.

This afternoon one of my kittens from my youngest group was out running around the yard. They're not very tame so I had DH help me catch the little guy. Turned him over and the underside of his neck had the skin all torn off and a hole at one place. He was fairly energetic so we let him go until this evening. I brought him inside and looked him over good and the wound hadnt started scanning over at all. I called a friend and told me she thought it could be botfly and to google it and watch a removal video. I did that and was convinced that that's what it was. :th GROSS!!! I was hoping the nasty thing was gone and that just the hole remained but when I checked to be sure it was obvious there was something still in there. Thankfully the kitten was very calm and I managed to squeeze the botfly out far enough that I could grab it with my nails and pull it out. I got it out but I couldn't do any more than that and DH said he wouldnt have been able to get it out but he could kill it! I flushed the wound with an iodine and water solution and then bandaged it with some Manuka honey and sovereign silver salve. Kitten was a trooper through the hole thing and never scratched once. I think he/she has a new name. We decided that Spicy, the mama cat had tried to get the fly out and that was why the whole area was stripped of skin. We'll keep Trooper inside for a while with the area covered to keep more flies from laying eggs there and hope it heals quickly.

Oh yuck, that would have grossed me out for sure. I hope the kitty heals up OK.

My little Buddy cat's fracture healed on his leg & he's now back outside again. For about a week he just wanted to keep going back into the garage because he had been in there for so long confined to two crates. He is getting acclimated again to being outside though & he's acting more like himself. This evening he was playing with the smaller kittens that were by the side of the garage. He's only about 6 months old himself, so still a kitten. He's the sweetest little cat & he sure took this injury well & his confinement. My DH wants to give him to someone to keep as an inside cat, but he's my chore buddy & I don't want him to go. He goes all around with me when I'm feeding chickens & he's such a nice boy.

I got my pen all finished this afternoon & all set up & moved the RIRs in there. They were busy checking out their new digs when I left them.

I've had several chickens get attacked by flies and unfortunately most of them were too full of maggots to save. That is so gross. I did find a bot fly in one of my pups once and removed it and cleaned it out. She did fine and heeled up well.
I don't think I mentioned I found my cat and her kittens. Yesterday I fed her and snuck out to the barn to check out the kittens. There are four of them. I really thought she would have had more cause she was huge. But she isn't at all a big cat. So with luck maybe I'll have some mousers around here afterall. I'm hoping I can get her to move them once the get their eyes open. I really want to tame them. I'm glad that is all she had cause she is eating like a pig. I sure hope she is adding a few mice to her diet as well.
I spent the day doing some gardening chores. I should have had these things all planted weeks ago but just never found the time. I'm still getting a few green beans. If I could count on a fall like this every year I would definitely plant a fall bean crop. My tomato vines are just gorgeous. Too bad they never produced any tomatoes. I'm sure hoping the sweet potatoes are adding more and more size. I haven't tried digging any yet to check them out. Last year was a total bust for sweet potatoes so I hope I get a good harvest this year.

I got the RIRs moved yesterday & moved a heavy dog house into their old pen. In the process of wrestling it in there I hurt my back & boy is it yelling at me today. I went out & got the paint stirred up for my breeder coop & then started painting it. I got the two ends done & my back just couldn't take any more today so I quit & came in to lay on my ice bag till time to go feed. I hope it feels better tomorrow so I can work on it more.

Hello everyone. I got back from OK today and the caponizing clinic I went to. It was amazing I learned so much, got my tools and made 2 of 3 into successful capons who are resting in isolation. I think I will be able to do it on my own, and will have a chance in around 6 weeks with the chicks that my broody just hatched. I feel so fortunate to have someone to teach me this skill. I will have no need to rehome my roosters, or butcher, because of aggression or fighting in the flock. Not to mention being able to provide those under city ordinances with big beautiful roos who won't crow, fight, or breed hens!

I will post pics of my capons tomorrow and continue to share their growth and development!

TaraBella I'm not sure why you would do that unless you just had one for a pet. Are you planning to offer to capon roosters that other people have just so they can keep them? I always thought this was something one would do to grow a bigger bird for butchering. I hadn't thought of it from a pet stand point.
Yesterday I spent trying to get caught up on bird care and I drained, cleaned and filled my duck pond. I really have too many birds in there and need to sell this year's babies. Well I need to sell a bunch of birds for that matter.
I didn't work in the building at all yesterday. I just had too much else to do.

Good morning peeps. Ahhh, what a beautiful day out there!

I had a very busy weekend. Kids had school carnival on Friday so took them there. Lydia, being autistic, had a total meltdown. So she had to stay outside with dad. Then on Saturday, we all went to pumpkin patch. Picked up a few pumpkins just for good measure while we were there. Then Sunday, I went to watch a movie with a friend who just retired. She and I were closed in the office so it was great to see her again.

I read a couple of posts about botfly.... sounds like nasty little creature. I'll have to google it to see what it looks like so if it happens to my birds, dogs, or cats, I'll know.

I'm shutting down the pool now that it gets cool. I also got my car all winterized. I think in the next couple of weeks, it will be cool enough that the duck pool will be drained and stowed away until next Spring. I'll be cleaning out all the shavings from this summer (using DLM). Then start it all up through the winter.

Lots of plan... just need the time to execute. LOL

Hope everyone is enjoying the nice Fall weather.

cleansquared I ended up with 2 cockerels & a pullet in the group I kept for myself, go figure. So I brought back 3 from my friend who can't have roosters & now I have 5 I have to pick from for the 2 I'm keeping for breeders & I'll butcher the rest when they're big enough. I will have chicks in the spring hopefully from the hen & pullet I have & I hope I get more pullets next year. This has been the year of the rooster for me, that's the majority of what I hatched this year it seems like.

tweety I'm loving this cooler weather, it's great right now because I have so much I need to do outside. I have started painting my breeder coop so I need it to stay warm enough to get that done & dry.
