I think I will have to find a way to do that. Don't need the runs and I might need the 100 proof to keep me warm instead so it looks like I will buy a heated waterer for them before the weekend and a really long extension cord!

My place is a spider web of extension cords all over the place in the winter. I even have multi-plugs in some pens to keep hooking more cords to. I just hooked up 5 more heated dog bowls today because it was just taking too much time in the cold dumping out ice & refilling water with buckets. I only have 4 pens left now without heated bowls so maybe that won't take me so long, besides the ducks & geese that is & they make a mess of their water all the time anyway. I also have a heated bucket for my sheep & need to get one for the goats as well it looks like.

I use heated dog bowl for most of my chickens. They work well. I do use heated buckets and stock tank heaters for the geese, ducks, and dogs though. I made a few cookie tin heaters which work well if the water is in the houses. Plus it kind of helps add heat to the house. I don't like water in the houses though cause it can get pretty messy.

Hello from Lawrence!

We have 3 beautiful Roosters to sell/rehome and thought this would be a good place to start. Of the 6 eggs our broody hen hatched on June 10th, 4 are roos. We got all our fertilized eggs from ChooksChick, all from good breeding stock. They are friendly so far and crowing the cutest little cockadoodledoos.

Silkied Ameraucana- $100
Blue Ameraucana- $10
Black Copper Maran- $10

If you are interested, send me a message and we can work out the details.

Thanks!
Jessi

Welcome Mellowfields! I'm afraid I have plenty of roosters myself & always have extras to get rid of as well. I have a Black Copper Maran rooster as my main flock rooster for my laying flock, I just love him.

It's so dreary & windy here today, it was supposed to be warmer but I haven't seen it yet. I still have things to do out there as far as bringing up straw & some hay & putting plastic on the hoop coops. I just haven't been able to get to it yet.

It's 34 here now, with the high supposed to be 37. I'm sure the chickens are shocked this morning, they're not acclimated either. I got up this morning late because I was so exhausted from working so hard yesterday trying to get everything done. I still didn't get my main coop cleaned out so I will have to deal with that as soon as there is a day I think I can tolerate being out there long enough. I did get all of the tarps on the pens but didn't get the plastic on the sides of the hoop coops, I just ran out of time. So I hope the chickens in those will be OK till I can get that done. I did get all of my heated bowls put out in the pens I can get electricity to but didn't get the cord over to the heated bucket for the sheep yet. I was putting straw in the shelters for the goats & sheep right at dark after getting water done, picking up hoses, & feeding. Boy I hate it that this hit so early, it's bad enough to have it hit when it usually does, but we usually have some time around now to finish up getting things done. At least I did get my breeder coop all painted, whew! Here's a pic of it painted:

It looks great!

So I was wondering, with it getting cold outside I need to know if anyone has any tricks of the trade to keep the chickens water from freezing if you don't have electricity in the coop/run? No one is home all day to keep an eye on it so I am concerned. We planned to run electricity this summer but other projects took center stage. We all know how that goes!! However, we did get a solid roof put up over them to better shield some of the elements at least.

We run one of those heavy duty orange extension cords from the house to the coop. DH has a heat lamp clipped where the birds can't get on it, and the waterer is underneath the lamp. Except when it's REALLY cold, the water stays nice and liquid. There have been times I've had to break a thin layer of ice, but it has never frozen solid. We've been doing this for however many years we've had chickens (4? 5?) and haven't had any problems with it. The only annoying this is that, with the water in the coop and even though it's raised up on a rock, the chickens kick a fair amount of straw into it.

Aw, I wish I could have a roo, they're not allowed in my town. I hope you find nice homes for them.

I woke up this morning and there was no snow. Within 30 minutes the ground was turning white. I'm not doing much of anything right now. It's hard to get motivated when I would really just love to light a fire and snuggle in a blanket. Looks like most of the chickens feel the same way. Not much activity out there today.

I have to ask myself why I prefer to have birds to care for when I could be just sitting in the house staying warm. There is something definitely wrong with my thinking!!!
