Oregano oil should take care of gape worm. I know she had a heavy mite load and that might have been making her all around miserable and most likely worms too. Any how she is feeling chipper now and bouncing around the yard. It's just the head shaking and several of my birds are doing it. Darn mites! Winter is the worst for getting rid of the darn things. I will try to use an ear oil for her. That does make sense.

Have you tried adding digestive enzymes to his food? It may help him digest his food. Just a thought tho. I'm adding digestive aids and several other things to Willows food and doing Lots of fish oil. Her coat is Much better already. It was painfully dry and thin and it's starting to wave a bit in a few places like Londons. I'm doing a homeopathic worker as well and it's working great so far. She's happy and enthused and it's regularly wearing London out! he's not used to so much exercise. lol maybe it'll turn some of his fat into muscle.

I need to take an updated pic of my little showgirls. One is so cute, I brought her in in a pet carrier so I could keep an eye on those precious eggs when she went broody. Anyway now when she needs to lay she runs up to the porch and frantically walks back and forth til I let her in to lay her egg! Such s goof ball!

Milomec I probably don't need to bring any more roosters in at this point, gosh you guys tempt me. I have such s difficult time getting rid of them here if excess. I might try some hatching eggs for new blood as I always seem to have a broody. I surely do appreciate u letting know.

My little showgirl. I found her in the coop last week not feeling well and brought her in. She had mites and possibly tapeworm? I am really fighting the tapeworm. I dosed her with oregano oil/olive oil mix and gave her a bath. She is still shaking her head a lot so possibly ear mites???? Anyone familiar?

Next day she is back out running around and feeling better now.

I lost my roo but he was poor quality and related to my girls. I just have this and one other white lookalike hen right now at 3 years old. She had 2 children this summer but neither were nn. One was hen, 1 roo. The hen seemed to have caught some kind of crusty eye thing from the feral cats and was basically blind at hatch. Every time I would dropper her eyes, she could see again. She was a very pretty little pullet but died during my hospital stay as I couldn't keep eye on her to make sure she could find food.

I'm not trying to disagree with you about your symptoms but the head shaking is more likely due to congestion than ear mites. Also the crusted eye thing didn't come from the cats because those diseases don't cross infect in class ( I am talking the scientific type of class to be specific..i.e. Kingdom, phyllum, class, order, family, genus, species.) It was most likely carried into the egg by the hen. I think you are both probably just experiencing colds or virus of some kind brought in my migratory birds. I know you like to do things naturally but if the oregano oil isn't working perhaps you should try some vetRX. I make my own using the same essential oils that go in the purchased kind and put them in a corn oil base. Then just put some on their water or in bad cases on their noses. Also if you do suspect ear mites simple olive oil will suffocate them. Just drop a drop in each ear canal. The birds will scratch at their ears to clean it out but in the meantime it will clear them.
Just because I don't know your particular situations chickens do shake their heads if a noise bothers them as well.
Also why don't you just breed your own showgirls? They are simply a turken crossed with a silkie. It's also less likely they will breed true by crossing a show girl to a show girl so you'd be better off breeding your own.
Tarabella if your bird does have tapeworm you won't rid her of it without praziquantel. Tape worm is very difficult to kill. I don't know of any natural method that truly works. I could be wrong but I don't think so.
It sounds like I am being argumentative in this post and I really don't intend to be. I am all for using natural methods to cure as much as I can. I really am trying to be helpful.

I have also read prazi. Man everything is so expensive that kills tapeworm. Chicken danz, don't think you are being argumentative at all. Tapeworm is very tough and I don't even think my beloved oregano even cleans it out. I do think it reduces the load but with my experience fighting it, one dose certainly doesn't cut it. Perhaps multiple doses would, I don't know but you can't really use it on cats or dogs in the oil firm, they can't keep it down. (Don't blame them really)

I was going to olive oil the ears but darned its an extensive job. I will get to it. I got about 40 chickens and right now 18 peas.

I wanted to blame those stupid feral cats for something. Every feral in this town has that upper respiratory thing with crusty eyes! First time I ever had a chick hatch with crusty eyes so I decided blaming them was a good idea! . Also knew it unlikely but hey, sounds good...

I hope that doesn't mean all her chicks from now on will have it.

I have 3 outside cats I bought tapeworm meds for but I am not up to doing the put the pill down the cat scramble! I was trying to get them dosed by mixing it in food but they are picky little goofballs!
The dog is easy. I suppose all Pyrenees are prone to all kinds of worms since they kill stuff all the time. . My silly dog loves squirrels and rabbits. Since he is fenced he is now reduced to playing games with the squirrels but he actually got one last year!

Thanks for understanding my intent. Tapeworms are very very difficult to eradicate. Some wormers will paralyze them so they detach from host but it doesn't kill them. Fenbendazole will for instance, do a fair job because you give it for at least 3 consecutive days which in theory will hopefully eliminate them from the host.
I sure understand treating a group of birds. There is no way I can individually treat my birds around here. We are talking hundreds. If it isn't something I can add to water I am sunk. I try to watch for signs and symptoms and catch the first cases but that doesn't always happen.
My take is good health is the best remedy for all ailments. It keeps the birds much less susceptible to being ill.
Those cat "colds" are really prevalent especially in feral populations and barn cats. There are several viruses as well as some bacterial infections that can cause that. Unfortunately it's impossible to treat them all. I adopted a cat sight unseen to keep it from being infected with the barn cat disease. What I didn't know was that it had already been moved to the barn before it was brought to me. She died about 6 months later of pneumonia and in the process infected one of my domestic cats. Luckily it hasn't spread any further that I know of. This particular domestic is a real possessive Be-atch who doesn't play well with others. It's a blessing in disguise.

That eye thing in cats is usually a virus & it spreads very easily. I have had momma cats spread it to their kittens & it's a mess to keep their little eyes cleaned up. If they can get through it they will usually be OK but it does sometimes kill them.

I think tape worms are just hard to get rid of period even in dogs. If they have ever had fleas at all they will have tapeworms & you can keep giving them wormers & they hang on. I have a little Maltese/Shih Tzu mix dog that I have given wormers to from the Vet & they're still not gone. It's just a very tenacious worm for sure.

Well I'm sure not looking forward to this surgery on Monday but if it will eventually get my knee better I need to do it. I've been in pain for two months now & it's just wearing on you. I had the same surgery on my other knee two years ago. I've just hurt myself more these last few years than I have in my whole life, especially the last two years. I had to have surgery two years ago for my right knee because I tore my meniscus, then last year I broke my right fibula, now I have a torn meniscus in my left knee. This has to stop, enough already!

I'm hoping my ewes don't decide to lamb while I can't get out there to check on them & see the babies. So far they're not showing signs of imminent delivery, but that could change any day. I'm pretty sure that Oreo the black & white ewe is going to have twins & the white ewe Milk is going to have a single. We'll see if I'm right. They both were twins themselves but often the first time mommas will have a single.
